Welcome to The Amish Potato’s Channel. My name is Cj Miller. I was raised Amish in Shipshewana, IN. I was Amish until I was 16 years old, when I started dressing “English”, drove a car and partied on the weekends. This is called Rumspringa.
I did this until I was in my late twenties. I then briefly joined the amish church, left again, and moved to Idaho where I discovered the truth of who Christ is, married my lovely wife and am now sharing my story on KZbin.
Thank you for watching and enjoy!

I'm interested in finding work in the RV industry. I've been working in the solar field for the last 3 years but I'm now on my 5th project because they only last so long and I'm currently driving 3 and a half hours each way to get to work. I'm not too far from the area in Indiana where the RVs are made. Do you have a contact number or something that can help. I'm a single father with 3 children so I don't want to keep moving around.

I was also raised Amish. My parents left the Amish after being baptized and were shunned. They had no choice to stay or leave the church. As a young kid, not being able to freely be with my many many cousins was devasting. Out of 11 siblings, my mother was the only one shunned. We were not allowed to eat at grandma and grandpa's house. @David Wolf- I was raised Baptist, but grew up in the same home my great grandfather built. I'm from a small community in Northern California. In the area I grew up in, most of my neighbors were Mennonite. It was a HUGE blessing to have to pass right by a Mennonite home going down the driveway across the street from my home so I could get to my great uncle & great aunts house. I was invited over one day by the mom of this family to play for a little while with her kids and such. It was a real education to me to see a whole different world of how Mennonites live compared to non-Mennonite. It was a few decades later before it was explained to me about the similarities and differences between the Mennonites and Amish.

What an incredible testimony I was raised Pentecostal (United Pentecostal Church) and "This is the only true church!" Was taught to me also I never realized there were so many similarities in doctrinal beliefs between churches. We had electricity. But there we're so many things we were taught that are similar. Yes, There is a loneliness in us and as time goes by we begin to recognize something is missing. For me it took a long time and the Holy Spirit leading me in how to pray and for good books to read. I keep a journal and one day I saw these words fall onto my page from my pen, " I have met me and I like me!" I was so surprised all I could do was smile. in that moment I knew that my Heavenly Father was telling me He knows all about me and He loves me and was telling me to love myself too... like in the Great Shema the Jews pray...' thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all your heart and all your mind and all your soul and all your strength, AND thy Neighbour AS yourself! “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. “This is the first and great commandment. “And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Matthew 22:37-39).

I have quite a bit around me here in missouri. Side note. My step grandpa was Amish. He changed his name and washed his hands from it. He never really talked about it. You my friend, I could listen to all the stories. I’m widowed with three kids and trying to do the best I can. But there was one point in my life. Me and my dad and sister always swam at this one creek. Well the Amish would come down to swim too. I was about 15 and our eyes locked and I was just ready to change my life and become Amish. My dad told me once the two of us kids at the time when we looked away he said for them not having any electricity there sure was sparks flying then. And his dad was looking at my dad and looking at us. Idk. It was crazy. I’ve always wondered if I did wrong by not being bold enough to go stand by him and strike up a convo. Thank you for letting me see finally 20 some years later that I made the right choice. Every heartache and pain I’ve had. That’s when I get closer to Jesus. I would love to hear all the debunks

@@theamishpotato I broke up with my fiance because I was serious about serving the Lord Jesus. My ex was "happy" living like the world and was pulling me away from God. I realized that I couldn't have it both ways and I chose Jesus. Even though I felt I had made the right decision, I terribly missed the friendship I had with this man. We were in our mid twenties. He soon became very violent toward me. My Mom and I lived in fear of him. This only deepened my conviction that I had chosen well, and didn't want to see my ex. (How could he think that blowing up my mailbox would induce me to marry him ?!. That he did !!) . He claimed to be a believer, yet he wanted me dead if I wouldnt go back to him. The more he ramped up his attacks , the more greatful I became that I had NOT married him. It was a blessing in disguise, because he had alot of rage bottled up. This was a side of him I had not seen before. His Mom and dad said he was supposed to take meds. for it... they said he'd done that for years.. They had "hoped not to tell (me )about it." Imagine !. Then, I lost my job as did my Mom when the co. closed. We were still being attacked by him. He rang the phone all night, threatening to burn down our home if we slept. Yes, he was the exact opposite of the Godly man he reprezented himself to be. I sank into years of Clinical depression, still grieving the loss of my dad to suicide on top of everything else. I was not comfortable going back to the church my ex had pried me away from. I had to admit I let my ex control and influence me...I had gone along with him. I found out just how miserable a person can be... I didnt want to live in pain any longer and I even begged God to kill me. Yet, God had things for me to learn and discover in my grief. I used to walk until I collapsed in exhaustion. That was the only way I could sleep. I got emaciated, too. For a long time, I ignored that I had stopped growing closer to the Lord. I had taken my eyes off of Him. I later sought out a Christian counselor, and she helped me. Gotta' add that you have to be PATIENT for a break through... I had alot going on. She helped me learn to understand myself and what all got me "going". Eventually my ex was picked up for a crime he'd done to his own family member, so he was diverted from attacking us. I had truly loved him at one time, and I prayed for him. I didnt hate him, but I sure hated how he treated us ! ! And I am glad I never blamed God for all this, for He was stepping into my sorrow daily, reaching for my hand when I was broken and blind with tears. One day I began reading the Pauline Epistles, and I couldn't put the Bible down !. (See, -- I had put myself on a spiritual "starvation diet" in order to spend more time on that failing relationship I 'd been in ). It felt so good to be back in the land of the living. It wasn't long before I went back to church and everyone said I literally glowed with happiness. I had never smiled like that before... it was something I wasn't aware I was doing.-- but everyone noticed it. Jesus brought me back from the brink of death ...again. Thanks to God ! ! .True story. "Now unto Him that is able to Keep You from falling, And to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, Be glory and majesty, dominion And power, both now and evermore Amen". - - Jude, verses 24 & 25

Wow, you touched on a profound point about feeling abandonment when your mom became overwhelmed with so many babies. Check out info on 'childhood emotional neglect'. It can be hard to get your head around but even loving, supportive parents who are providing for kids physical needs can neglect them by not responding to their emotions (and mine didn't have to split time among a dozen kids, they just grew up without and so did I). I just recently found out about how this can affect kids and it filled in a really big gap in understanding my life instead of feeling guilty that I was so messed up. In the senses most people recognize how many children lacked support I never questioned or were victimized by caretakers. And the way he's repeating all the good stuff about childhood... I had to pause because it sounded so familiar. [Sorry to type this big novel of a reply, obviously I'm not in any position to assume this is what either you or he are dealing with but hopefully it's helpful for someone.]

Having so many children is really hard. Our dad was one of Seven, the 'Baby'', but he said ''The last thing my mother needed was more children''. Kids need their parent's affection and attention. A mother frazzled by too many kids can't do that.

I related to this too and share many of his feelings towards himself. We weren't amish but my parents went to work in children's homes when I was six. They were terrific at it and touched many children's lives but me and my siblings were to supposed to just know they loved us while they took time with the kids who really needed them. Also we were supposed to be shinning examples because we were raised right. It was very damaging to all four of us kids and even now with my parents in their eighties they talk about how proud they are of the kids that still keep in contact with them and not about us though we all turned out pretty good. So it's like they are picking at a scab.

I have always read the Bible, and wondered why others, even many church-goers and preachers, have no idea what it says!! Like you, my biggest breakthrough, was understanding that I am 'acceptable'. A child of God who DOES accept me, and finally ..I accept me! :"Love God, Love others, as you love yourself." YOU are a God send! Thank you so much for sharing, and reaching out to others. @Emily Morales: No, this is not normal or usual among the Amish. However, it is a temptation to many humans, regardless of their religion. What is different among Amish is that those who are confused, tempted or abused often do not understand correct healthy boundaries, and often lack the vocabulary to ask for help. Out of a desire to protect privacy and preserve purity, sexual things are not discussed with or in front of children. So for example, if your father were molested and never got the counseling he needed, it can be repeated in future generations. This is not unique among Amish, but their isolation and lack of education on what is sexually appropriate behavior makes them a little more susceptible.

Wow wow wow. This was a long video but I chose to stay with it and I was so glad I did. I could relate to you in so many ways that I was in tears several times. I have always enjoyed reading the Amish books because they are so heartfelt and also good clean reading..but always knew as a Christian that they are in error. I believe that God has used you in a mighty way and because of what you went thru...your testimony will change lives. Praise God. The only thing I was sorry about was that you didn't disclose more about finally finding love after your heart was broken for so long. I am touched by this video and by your transparency because this is one of the things that will reach people going thru similar experiences. GOD BLESS YOU AND FAMILY and so thankful God led you to the truth.

Basically, I think the way of living the Amish lifestyle is very comforting. Grounded, connected to nature and the people in your own group! The many rules, prohibitions, the lack of education and bigotry, the immense pressure within the group and the exclusion from the environment do not make the decision easy to choose this way of life. The golden middle would be perfect!

I'm from Pennsylvania too and I so appreciate our Amish. All our organic products that we get in the health store come from them including our raw milk, butter and free range eggs. They live a healthier lifestyle, I think. We can all learn from each other. God bless!

@@haileyfields5190 alot of Amish, more then most actually is just as unhealthy as the English if not even worse. The foods they grow ain't any different then the English grown and IT ALL CONTAINS GMOS AND CHEMICALS, YES ALL OF IT!! IT DOES NOT MATTER IF THEY CLAIM ORGANIC OR NOT, ITS ALL CONTAMINATED. ALOT OF AMISH ALSO I HAVE FIGURED OUT THEIR EGGS AREN'T FREE RANGE AND ALOT OF THE TIMES AINT EVEN FARM EGGS, JUST ALDI'S EGGS REPACKAGED. SOME OF THE AMISH MILK SAME WAY. WHEN YOU GET THEIR MILK ITS ALL PASTURIZED AND HOMONOGIZED (WHICH USUALLY IS ONLY DONE COMMERCIALLY) SO THEY CANT DO IT IN THEIR LITTLE SHOPS WITH WHAT ANY NORMAL PERSON WITH A KITCHEN HAS. ALSO THEIR BAKED GOODS DONT USUALLY CONTAIN BUTTER EVEN THOUGH THEY PUT THAT ON THERE, THEY USE VEGETABLE OIL OR SHORTENING INSTEAD... E&S SALES IN SHIPSHEWANA IS AMOUNG SOME OF THE WORST AMISH SO I NEVER EVER SHOP THERE!!! THEY ARE FAR FROM CHRISTIAN! JUST CUZ THEY CLAIM TO BE HOLY AND CHRISTIANS DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE. ALSO most of them don't even know about the real God or what the Bible says as it's all taught in high German which only an extreme very few of any even know so it's like sitting into a church hearing a sermon of a complete different language week after week. You end up blocking it out.... There's so much I could tell you you wouldn't believe or you wouldn't want to hear... Alot of the Amish are leaving due to their so called religion. Just like rise and roll bakery, none of that is from scratch. It's made from a donut mix package. The original owners did make it all from scratch but then the other people who bought it turned it into a corporation kinda business....

I watched you in an interview with Anthony Padilla (I know I'm late to see it!) and your eloquence and emotion really drew me into your story. My heart sunk when you explained abandonment, feeling like you're always trying to keep up with "two flat tires" and how it affected you as an adult; I hear you. While my childhood, like yours, was so happy, the arrival of my siblings so soon after me caused my young mind trauma too and I'm now, at 34, just dealing with it. I truly wish you all the best in this life!

I grew up next to the Amish, old order, in Ohio. They were my friends and babysitters, depending on age. I used their outhouse and drank from the ladle from the water bucket. My friend left. I think the rest of the family stayed in. Her parents were kind and loving. There were a few of us English living among them. Maybe they had a decent bishop?

YOU... are ENOUGH. I hope you keep contentment and peace in your heart. Love wins. I would be considered an atheist by most. My "bible" is a little book titled, "Everything I Need to Know I learned in Kindergarten." I was sad to hear you put down and condemn your fellow man and Amish family. That's why I have an aversion to any religion who sets all others as an outkast who don't believe EXACTLY as they do, and simply not love and value all others. I've never understood people who preach love but push exclusion and condemnation. I like to say, if there is a god... she gave me the intelligence and ability to question and will understand that I wake every day and pursue the Golden Rule- try to give more to this world than I take from it, and know that there is truly more good in this life than bad. I am happy to hear your story and that you have found contentment. Your children will greatly benefit from your experiences... as long as YOU don't do to them, EXACTLY what your family did to you- which is preach that the "WAY" you have found is the ONLY way. Or you may indeed understand the loss your own family felt in losing you. PEACE. LOVE. JOY TO ALL.
