Obviously given all the different groups etc., you could go pretty in-depth on this, but I wanted to try to cover it in a nice tight overview. Very simple living people,seem to be "miminalists",meaning that they do not bog themselves down with liads of Commercial items. They have a great work ethic;prefer to create from scratch what they have for use, and, this is commendable. 😊👌✌

@@justforthesaints8536 As far as I know they do. They mainly differ (to "normal" Protestants) in their view/opinion about baptizing. They don't do infant baptizing but only faithfull/denominational baptizing. (Same as Mennonites.)

Here in Missouri, I've occasionally hired a 15-year-old Amish boy to help me with clearing brush, digging, etc. I can tell you one thing -- Amish are HARD workers.

@Hitler was a Comedian i literally think in retrospect, that in the main church I grew up in, I was one of the only people who believed in god. I wasn't exactly a problem member, but I had to confront the church over multiple false beliefs and in the end I realised going to church was bad for me. I much more enjoy my quiet life of my own, solo walk with god. I highly suggest getting a bible without verse numbers like an old JB Philips volume. It helps you memorize whole books of the bible, by not having reference points. So much scripture arguments, result in 2 lines of the bible vs some other 2 random lines, in this they often miss the context of the situation.

I found it oddly comforting to listen to a couple of those fellows discussing the merits between the cheese-stuffed and the polish sausages on the roller grill. Goes to show we're all more similar than different, and we ought to appreciate that more.

We are good friends with an Amish couple from Indiana. She was a schoolteacher and now helps him in his carpentry business. As they put it, they were not blessed with children. When they visit us they love to watch old television shows, like westerns and Andy Griffith. They bring their dvd player and listen to country music. While they don't drink at home they will enjoy our home brewed beer with us. They are very down to earth, have a close relationship with G-d, and are open to experiencing the world without allowing the world to change them. We met them when they came out to work on a friend's house. We invite them on camping trips and excursions and they stay with us for long visits while pitching in on our homestead. Susan thinks my kitchen gadgets are cute but unnecessary. I told her, don't mess with my gadgets!

When I first moved to my current address in a rural town, I had no car, and I carried groceries home with a huge backpack. I was given a lift by a Mennonite woman in a pick-up truck and we had a wonderful chat. She also tried to find an address on her cellphone. I learned that in her community these were OK. Her folk, even the children, wear traditional clothing. Women and girls wear the simple dresses and bonnets. She, her husband and family run a farm and farm store. I like to drop in to buy sausages, jams, and produce and say hello. BTW - I'd love to see a video about the Amish relationships with their horses. I also wonder if the Amish still use Clydesdales or other heavy horse breeds for plowing and harvests.

Clydesdales are considered "show" horses in NE Indiana by most church districts. Most of the draft horses here are Begians, Percherons, or Half lingers. In eastern PA where my wife comes from, draft mules are commonly used, also.

My family runs the gamut from Old Order to somewhat modern. I remember visiting my Aunt in Canada. She was on the modern side but when we went out I always remember her grabbing a sweater to cover her arms, saying "let's not offend the Old Order." It's also been a good lesson in the multi-cultural place where I live.

I grew up in Melbourne Australia. I now live in Montgomery Texas. Until 3 years ago I never knew Hutterites existed or even much about Amish. I was happy to visit a Heritage weekend market in Waco and started learning more. It’s so interesting to learn the history going back to Central Europe. My ancestors left Prussia and settled in South Australia due to religious persecution… around 1850. Isn’t you tube a gift?

I am a menonit from Paraguay. And yes, we have very difrent customs and also beliefs among "our" people. In my case, I belong to what you would call the modern menonites. A cousin of mine is the minister for infrasture and comunications of Paraguay. I know personaly varios menonites that have been in the senat of my country. My children all have a university degree, and I was my sons copilot for 7 years of race car rallying (definitly a bit faster then a buggy)

I am descended from Pennsylvania Dutch. Which are actually German. My mom canned, did laundry, with a ringer washer, and stored canned goods in the basement. We also had a family room, my father built. I found many of these things common in our house, in Illinois. We weren't Amish, but the living tradition lived in my home.

My understanding is that the Pennsylvanian Dutch were so named by the English speakers who interpreted the word "Deutsch" (pronounced "doytch") meaning German, as being "Dutch" (Netherlanders)

Two centuries ago Germany and the Netherlands didn't exist as such (it was still a lot of smaller kingdoms, principalities and duchies). In al of present day Germany, Austria, Netherlands and part of Switzerland a variety of german dialects were spoken, linguistically divided into lower, middle and higher german, with the divisions based primarily on topography and geography, not nationality. The lower german dialects spoken in the present Netherlands, northwestern Germany, parts of the Rhine valley and some german settlements on the Baltic coast were called deutsch, dutch, deitsch, duits at the time. (All being spelling variants in present languages, but the same word then.) As time passed the word developed different meanings in various places. Thus the english calls the official language of the Netherlands dutch and the german language german, while germans call their official language Duits and the netherlanders theirs Nederlands. The english also used to call the Afrikaans language of southern Africa dutch. Frisian was spoken in both the northern Netherlands and northwestern Germany (the old Friesland/Frisia) and is similar to but distinguishable from both. Pennsylvania dutch is a german language, but has significant differences from the hanoverian german of the mercenaries of the American war of independance.

Mennonites were among the very first non-native settlers to cross the border into the Niagara Peninsula after the American Revolution. I recall that sometime in the 1980's the two hundredth anniversary of Mennonites in Niagara was celebrated. I've known a few people who are descendants of that group.

Nice job of sketching the wide range of styles in the Mennonite world. I grew up Mennonite in the midst of the large Amish community near Shipshewana, IN. I get back there now and then and am amazed at how much Amish life is changing. For one thing they have become very prosperous and that is changing lifestyles and attitudes. There are also a lot of very entrepeneurial young Amish. The home place I grew up on is now owned by a young Amish man who has a thriving solar business. Every Amish homestead has at least 1 or 2 solar panels that they use primarily to power a heavily insulated freezer. All you need is a solar panel and a bank of 12 volt batteries and you've got frozen food! I'm also amazed at how widely Amish communities have spread around the country. Last week I discovered an Amish community in Elkton, KY when I delivered some farm implements to an Amish owned business there.

In Elkton, KY there is four groups of horse and buggy people. There’s the Amish and then the rest are Mennonites. Wenger Mennonite , 35s and Mid -West connection which recently split off from the Wengers.

I live in Northern Ontario Canada and we have a large community of Amish and Mennonites close by. I love their sales fares where they sell all kinds of goodies. Home made bread, canned goods, pickled everything, quilts, you name it. They are awesome people but pretty darn shy. They don't talk much to the outsiders.

I live in west Texas and my town has a very large Mennonite community. Many of them are from Canada and Mexico originally. They range from very progressive groups to Old Colony Mennonites. To my knowledge the Old Colony groups here do not use horse and buggies for transportation, but they do use limited technology, if any at all. This was interesting. TFS.

I know of one lady whose family doesn't own a TV, computer, etc. She and her daughters wear head coverings and always dresses and skirts and blouses, no pants. Love that you shared here.

Seminole has been a real challenge for the faith. I came here in 1983 as the bust was bottoming out. Comanche Trails and east if town was ghettos. Things have changed. Mennonites joining the military and becoming police officers. They are good people and are dedicated friends.

Good analysis of the two groups. I grew up in the Mennonite church, my parents weren’t Mennonite, but its where my Mom took me as a child. When I made my confession of faith, I became a part of that congregation. At that time, mid 70’s, about half the men wore the plain coat and the women wore the cape dress. The other half just wore regular clothes, but the men didn’t wear ties and no one wore jewelry. Now if you were to go into that church, the congregation would look just like any congregation in a Methodist church or any Protestant church. I visit occasionally and am still warmly welcomed, even though I’m part of a nondenominational church now. I still hold to many of those values I was taught as a child. We also have Old Order Mennonites in one of the communities in my area, the Shenandoah Valley.

We have Amish to the east of us a couple of miles that only use hand tools, and Amish to the north of use that use electric tools - as long as it is charged with a generator (or they don't know how it was charged). One group made the tin for our new post frame building, and the other installed it. The installers used all hand tools. it was a pretty awesome sight.

Thank you for this video. I grew up in York County, PA, across the Susquehanna River from Lancaster County. Every time I would venture across the river or shop at our local farmers markets, I was well aware of the two cultures but never really understood the differences. Only that the Mennonites were a little more progressive. I'm really not familiar with your series, but living now in Florida, I know that there's a rather large Amish retirement community in Sarasota. I think your followers would be interested in a video about that. Who knew that some Amish actually retire. Especially to Florida!

There is a Mennonite hospital system in Puerto Rico with 12 hospitals/clinics/ER’s mostly in Central and Eastern part of the island. It was started, from what I’ve read, in 1944 by a group of Mennonite missionaries who came to the island to minister to what was still definitely a depressed economy. I’ve only seen a few Mennonites in what would be considered traditional garb in PR, and I’ve never seen anyone using horse drawn buggies there. Interesting videos.

Within 20 miles of my house, I have old and new Amish, Beachy, old sect and modern Mennonites, along with Hutterites. MCC has their relief sale here at the Kansas State Fairgrounds every year. It's a great place to live. Good neighbors all around. The town I went to high school (Buhler, KS - about 10 miles NE of Hutchinson) had 3 churches - they were all Mennonite - they were all slightly different... but it was referred to as the North Church, Middle Church, and South Church - to figure out which church you were talking about!

I used to live in Wisconsin. There were Amish groups all over the place. They were always the nicest people. They would do open air markets so you can buy their food which is just outstanding. Their carpentry and woodworking skills are next to none. They are a very hard working people. There was the occasional Amish hate crime. A couple of awful people would beat them up on the side of a road or kidnap their children. In the winter time, believe it or not they would play hockey on the frozen lakes and waterways. They are pretty good as well.

There is a decent amount of bigotry out there against them. There are also different Amish groups which can be more or less engaged with the non-Amish. That engagement and also things like how conservative they are can affect people's attitudes towards them. But on the whole I think they are positively viewed.

It's just they choose to follow a path that others don't understand and the Amish have been in America a lot longer than most of these idiot hillbillies who try to pick on them. I had found that an Amish woman will make her wedding dress. After words she packs it away. When she dies, they community dresses her in that dress. I have always wanted an Amish quilt. Shawano County in Northeast Wisconsin has a very large Amish population. There stores (Yoder Bakery) are filled with the best and healthiest foods. Well, my wife and I are partial to the Pecan Pie. Uh, maybe sugar is their one vice!

Decades ago, while in high school I worked part-time in a hospital cafeteria. The hospital had a nursing program. I noticed one student wore a gauze cap, being curious, I asked one of the students why, and was told she was Mennonite. Years later my delivery territory would take me to Kouts, Indiana, south of Valparaiso, which had a Mennonite church. Whenever I passed it, I always thought of that student, 60 years ago. The Hospital was West Suburban, Oak Park, Illinois.

My 10th Great Grandfather, Hans 'The Martyr' Landis, was an Anabaptist / Täufer (Baptist). To make him stop re-baptizing adults that the Protestant Church had baptized as infants, the Protestant Church beheaded him September 30, 1614, in Zürich, Switzerland. Most of his followers then went with Menno Simons. All my ancestors that migrated to America were Mennonite Ministers. --- I live in Northern California and most my neighbors are Mennonite.

I worked side by side for several years with a number of Mennonites from Mexico who came back to Canada to live and work. They were from a settlement of Mennonites from Manitoba who had gone to Mexico in the 1920's after being offered land. Most have moved on now but one is still here. He's pretty much lapsed though. At least one still had hereditary Canadian citizenship.

Isn't the application of Meidung the most significant difference between the Amish and the conservative Mennonites? If somebody is banned by a Mennonite congregation, it means they can't attend church functions but they can still meet and interact with other church members. But a banned Amish member is shunned entirely and can't even sit at the dinner table with members of their own family.

I attended Grove City College in northwestern Pennsylvania in the mid 1960's. There were what were called the 'black bumper Amish' in the area. They drove cars with the chrome painted black so as to not appear ostentatious.

I'm a old colony mennonite but I guess you could call it a new old colony mennonite church. I live in kansas and our community looks quite different from the old colony mennonites in Mexico. I grew up in Mexico and my parents moved to the USA in 2013, when I was 13 years old, so I know exactly what the old colony mennonites are like. Some pretty big differences from Mexico to here in kansas. I grew up with amish teachers in Mexico, and they were extremely strict and made my school years very dull. We were never allowed to color or draw or read stories, except on fridays for 30min. You would get in trouble for smiling at a boy because that was flirting..

His family was slaughtered by the Anabaptists in Switzerland. He fled to Germany. There his nephews Hans and Jost Joder brought him to America in 1751. In the early 90's I attended the University of Waterloo, known as one of the top "tech universities" in Canada. It was only a 10 minute drive from the St. Jacob's Farmer's Market. St. Jacobs and the surrounding counties were known for its large Mennonite populations. It was an interesting dichotomy to see graduate and PhD students talking and buying goods from Mennonites early on a Saturday morning (great food, always fresh, free from preservatives, etc.), only to see them again later in laboratories doing some of the fundamental developments in mathematics, electronics, computer science and more at the time.

I live in Owen Sound not far from where you were. I attended college in Kitchener and on my way home on weekends we would stop at a "convenience store" run by a nice Mennonite family :) they had the greatest pepperoni sticks you could find anywhere. And they were cheap too. Occasionally we see them in town buying stuff, and they are always polite :) I really wish I had some friends from that community :) I would love to live their lifestyle for awhile, and see a barn raising. I wouldn't actually do anything because I'm a lazy A^& person :P but I could supervise while holding my Timmies coffee :)

From what I remember they had a lot of interesting stuff :) I can never remember where that convenience store was (I wasn't driving) When leving Kitchener I remember Picard's Peanuts on the left of the intersection, and we turned right and went a few miles. I'm not sure if we made turns or what, but we would always stop there :) It was in a very small settlement from what I remember. Not in Mennonite territory. **sigh** Twas a good pepperoni stick :P. I knew a Mennonite community in central Michigan in the 70s. My parents retired to the area when I was in my last year of high school. I worked in a sawmill pallet factory owned by one of their families and got to know a few of them. Very friendly people, allways cheerful. They all drove cars, had electricity in their homes, used machinery etc. Listening to radio or watching tv was not allowed.

Near where I live there once was another group (1805 -1815.) Known as the Rappites or Harmonists. They formed the Harmonist Society. Johan Georg Rapp was a German-born American ascetic who founded them. The town is known as Harmony. There is a cemetery for 100 members of the group. They did not mark their graves either. The cemetery was walled in around 1869 by a group of Mennonites. There is another group i habe heard of called the Hutterites.

I did not know Mennonites have immigrated to Canada and Mexico. Growing up in PA most wore head coverings and some drove black or navy blue vehicles. A family lives 3 houses away from my parents, they sold doilies and baked goods from their home, their daughter now owns the local ice cream stand. We moved to KS, and 2 of the teacher/librarian families at our Christian school were Mennonite, but you wouldn't know it. They're very progressive. Thanks for the background stories.

My father’s family are Dunkards which is similar to Mennonite and Amish. For example they use “Modern” farm equipment such as tractors but they only use like metal tires. They can’t have rubber on the tires. Similar to the Amish buggy’s wheels. Both sides of my family is very heavily Pennsylvania Dutch. My father is able to speak to some of the Amish we have near us. “South Central Pennsylvania”. We have a cabin on the New York/PA border and there’s a small Amish Community there which we’ve become friends with. Very lovely people they are!

4:30- I heard on another documentary that Amish services last up to four hours without a break followed by dinner on the grounds of whom ever was hosting the service in their barn. The elders are chosen by the people and the entire service is in Dutch.

The most conservative churches - eg Swartzentruber Amish - have services of that length, but most Amish have about a 3-hour service. There is a simple fellowship meal following the service. Pennsylvania Dutch is the first language of most Amish though it is in fact a German language ( a bit confusingly some will call it "Dutch" for short)

Yes there can be a one-upmanship in that sense with some people. Almost a pride in plainness. Amish are aware of that danger, at least some of them are. Lot of different Amish groups but I'd say most are pretty even-keeled about it though, and don't lean on plainness as a source of feeling superior (meaning over English or other Amish). But humans are human.

I saw a group of early 20-something Mennonite girls refinishing the side of a house. It was insane the work ethic they had. It was so weird to see that, and all of them were in the traditional dresses and bonnets, but with colors add sneakers, and they used power tools. It was definitely an interesting experience.

I have often compared it to the secular world in that we have various denominations but we all believe in the same God and in Jesus. I lived in Harrisonburg, Virginia. There is a Mennonite university there. They wear regular clothing. Then there are women that wear prayer coverings. I thought they looked like white upside-down baskets.These folks rode bicycles a lot. Then the old order would drive the black buggies and dress all in black. You can get baptized at any age as a catholic too, but waiting makes sense. I don't remember John the Baptist baptizing babies in the Bible. I don't know about non baptized people not being able to get into heaven, as the catholic church says. That just doesn't make sense to me. But hey, I am more of a gnostic. Former catholic though. I am very interested in these lifestlyes, because I often get tired of the modern world. But I just can't understand people separating from each other for believing in God as well as for not believing. I think the right way of believing is loving and that should bring us together, not separate us in billions of denominations.

Not sure where your getting your facts. For the most part your right. My parents are old colony menno. The ones in Mexico are far from below poverty. Many of them very wealthy. Their are some that are struggling but that’s in any culture. As far as Canada. Ontario. Manitoba Saskatchewan and Alberta have huge Mennonite areas. Some of them hold companies that are extremely large. Also. Very very few old colony colonies still use horse and buggy. They have very modern up to date vehicles. Including my employer who drives a very nice Yukon. The Mexico Mennonite have evolved. It’s just taken many years.

I know a lot of what you covered due to my own research, and reference the Amish for where we are going as a whole species. I see Amish whipping out cell phones regularly and take it as a serious warning sign for where we are all going as a whole. I've also seen the extremism of the Amish where my car was most definitely not welcome, dozens of people walking around everywhere not just on the road, but even on the gravel and dirt road, plenty were going barefoot! *What keeps me most curious is what will happen to the various sects of Ana Baptists when technology overruns them in another 100 years.* TBH, I greatly suspect even the Amish will have a huge shift in direction due to the path of our species as a whole.

My Grandpa used to tell a story about Mennonites during WW2 time that lived as neighbours. Being that Mennonites were devout pacifists it was known they refused to join in the war effort. This bothered some of the community so one of them told a Mennonite at a town meeting... "If everyone were like you we'd lose the war". In response the Mennonite said... "If everyone were like us there wouldn't be any war".

They have some similarities and are also considered an Anabaptist church though historically emerged a bit later than Amish/Mennonites/Hutterites and from a different background. One of my friends who has since passed away was a convert to the Old Order River Brethren and his style of dress was quite similar to Amish, though he drove a car. But there is a range across Brethren churches as well, similar to what I describe in this video about the Mennonites, with some being quite modern.

It may be Old Order German Baptist, I grew up in that group and they have churches in PA, they also have church's in Ohio, Indiana Kansas and California there are some churches in other states but most are in the states I listed. They dress much like the Amish but drive cars and use Modern farm equipment and Phones. They do not allow TV, Radio or Internet use. Years ago they was part of the Brethren church but parted ways when some wanted to allow more modern things and some wanted to keep the Old ways.
