What a beautiful man Mr. Lake was. Inside and out. So captivating and intoxicating to watch him do what he loved so much, and did so consistently well. I simply cannot get enough of those smiling eyes behind long brown lashes, that voice that could do justice to any song, and his stellar bass and acoustic guitar playing. A humble man, a gracious man, a man who gave the world one of the best gifts he could give - his talents and himself. Clearly he loved what he did, and he was pure joy to watch. I regret that even though I was at California Jam in 1974, which was one of their absolute best sets, I left the concert early, so I never saw it until 4 decades after the fact. They were not one of my fave bands back in high school - too 'different' and progressive for my immature musical tastes back then - but they certainly are now. I cannot get enough of ELP. RIP Greg and Keith. This world could sure use your music again. True talent does not need electronic filtering and augmentation. They were the real deal, just 3 very talented and dedicated men creating a sound unlike any other.

I saw Greg Lake do a solo show, back in May 2012, just him by himself, sitting on a stool, picking up various instruments, and talking about various songs/artists that inspired him, then pieces of various works he'd done with Crimson, ELP & solo. Kind of a career retrospective. I just happened on it, in an email. It was at a small theater in Hollywood (The Orpheum), not too expensive, and I knew I was going to see Roger Waters perform "The Wall" the following night. Wow, was I glad I went! I wound up meeting up with several people I knew from Facebook that are also big music fans (and most of us were going to both shows), and it made for one of the most memorable weekends of my life! I will always treasure that time! RIP, Greg. RIP, Keith. Both of you are sorely missed.

I saw that show in London, lake dropped everything down a key and slowed it down. I have seen Lake and ELP several times and that was one of the best gigs! I’m pretty sure Rogers guitars had also played with Emerson’s solo tours.

Lake's voice is raspy. Just not what it was back in the 70s. I realize Arsenio was very popular in the early 90s but he seemed well out of his "milieu" in interviewing a band from which he really had zero context for and probably never listened to one of ELP's records. Arsenio, in retrospect, was a flash in the pan. ELP lives on forever.

There seem to be quite a few negative comments regarding ELP, which I would imagine are from the less culturally developed members of a still developing nation. This was of course an original solo hit for Greg, and would suppose that it was chosen as to be suitable for a mediocre show. It does show how Greg has lost some of the range in his voice over the years, and it would have been better to perform a typical ELP piece, but that probably would have been a bit too much for the kind of audience who would watch this show live. Music aside, they were a decent bunch of blokes. Bearing in mind when they formed, they were already established individually as top class musicians, they were still willing to sit in the back of a van after a gig eating fish and chips out of paper with their fans.

To Trog Wallaby: I understand your premise, but they didn't want to overwhelm the unsuspected audience with too much over-the-top shock rock, and sophisticated stuff. Simplicity is the key for a show like this, maybe to expose the nation to the popish side of ELP. -----------------¶--------------- Arsenio is just _shuffling paperwork at his everyday job:_ booking, sorting, selecting, and doing enough research to get by. He and his *community of ilk* are not expected to extol the excellence of ELP as we would expect.

What a great band; I miss Keith and Greg a lot. I mean their presence, because they will always live in their music. By the 90s they were great in all aspects: the music (adapted to those years but the essence remained), their looks, so stylish and classy.... With regards to the matter, I don't recognise Carl Palmer today. He has aged very badly, he is always very scruffy, considering he is a guy who always led a healthy lifeaty ans took great care of himself. I met Mike Rutherford last year, he is Carl's same age and he looks splendid! Same Steve Hackett... Well, an opinion. I've always thought that such artists should take care of their looks as s much as their music for respect to the people.

At that time they were talking about their childrens interest and yes, they were listening to Rap, Madonna, etc... because that is what their children were listening to. So, sure they, as pros have what is called "big ears" and they keep them open. Jaco talked about that too back when he was interviewing. Ellington talked about how he viewed jazz as an artform and how swing was business. Big ears and staying viable. Truth

It's funny how Carl Palmer said "it would nice to see that happen in the coming summer" because that's when Woodstock 94 happened. So with that in mind maybe Carl was clairvoyant.

Arsenio was a terrible and rude interviewer. ELP should have avoided his lame ass show. They were light years out of his league.

Arsenio to ELP: "...who was at Isle Of Wight?" Greg: "everybody!" Arsenic is Clueless obviously. When asked why Zappa hosted his show once, Arsenio said he couldn't do it that night so "they called 1-800-Caucasian". There were a couple of good acts on his show, Wynton Marsalis and Chick Corea were memorable. Loved ELP, saw them in 77, 78 and 93.

+Mike West Funny thing it's from a studio recording as well. One of three versions (the latest) that I own . Notice the female backing vocal's at song's end. ELP has stood the test of time. How about Arsenio? No, huh.

Shame about Lakes voice, once upon a time one of the best. They were massive and so well respected in the 70’s, second only to Zeppelin by the mid 70’s.

it seems that Emerson was being politically correct, speaking positively about rap, because the host is black as is much of the audience. He probably thinks its rubbish
@AndreCholmondeley
@AndreCholmondeley 9 жыл бұрын
***** That's absurd. What do you base that on?? I know Keith, and actually if you study history - he came up playing and loving jazz, soul and blues within his various musics. So black music forms are near and dear to him. Go look up PP Arnold, soul singer he backed in the late 60s.Like he said "It's got some ways to go"...so it's not like he raved about rap. He had the respect to indicate it's a type of folk music, which it is.

I totally agree,but that shows you how much class they display by attending Arsinios show....I thought they also held back by not expressing their real opinion on the music of the nineties....even thou I can still enjoy most of the nineties. However the SHIT they play today is as Greg hit it right on target,is market oriented. Anyway thats my two cents worth.....Appreciate your comment !!!

I agree that Arsenio could have asked more and better, but on the other hand, his viewers at least heard this cosmic music, and perhaps some of them even thought about renouncing rap...

I absolutely love the sound of ELP, but I also like good rap. Do you think that's incompatible? I believe there's good music in every musical genre, in rap as well of course. And any serious musician will respect good music of any genre, even if he doesn't personally like it.
