Yes, and they’re ironically getting themselves into a corner, by trying to get themselves out of it. Because if they’re “Just kids” then you have to put more elbow grease into them, so they don’t become criminals, and do far more serious crimes. Ya know, LIKE A PARENT!

First story, not the jerk. I really hate it when people say "they're just stupid kids", as an excuse for their behavior. Stealing a bike is not something any "stupid kid" would do, and nor is vandalizing or commiting over 100 crimes within a month. The OP did the right thing, not just to get justice for himself, but also to make the kids have a decent life after they serve their time.

for anyone thinking they got too much punishment, OP said they pleaded their crimes down to 3 each out of 127. What that means is to forgo the expense of a trial the kids just pleaded guilty to 2% of their actual crimes. Therefor the punishment they received was only 2% of what a grown man would've received if he went to trial.

In a store I was in recently, they had only one register open with like three free employees wandering around. There was a long line of like 6 people (Including me) at the one open register. I asked one of the employees if they could open up another register. The employee glances at the line for like a brief instant, and then just says it's fine before fast-walking off. A couple minutes later and that employee plus another were scrambling to open two more registers. And I got first in line at the next one open. I'm guessing the manager had something to say after they tried to avoid opening more registers

I used to do HVAC service. A few years ago, someone broke into my work truck and stole around $1,500 worth of tools. I made a police report, but no one was ever arrested and the tools weren’t recovered. A couple of liberal acquaintances said I shouldn’t have been upset about the theft because it was probably committed by someone in need who was “blessed” by the opportunity to steal the tools and pawn them for money to buy food. It’s that kind of mentality that fosters entitlement and crime.

That first story really got me. Especially “they’re just kids.” I got a “AITJ” story myself. So I am the general manager at a food service place. In our city, after any high school sport, play, event, etc. the high schoolers like to come over and hang out. We don’t mind the patronage as it’s super good business and can always lead to a full dining room. Throughout the course of this year though, the basketball team has been the worst than ever before. I don’t mind the kids having fun in the dining room. They are just socializing after all. However, throughout the course of this school year, they have broken 5 tables, thrown rocks at cars in the drive thru/parking lot, hopped on hoods on moving vehicles, thrown food every time they come in, and were actually messing around with restaurant tools by going into the dining room closet. This last time, was the final straw with them literally jumping up onto a table from the floor. As well as making other guests uncomfortable and leaving. Once I heard about that, I got the camera feed to prove who it was, prepared myself, and went out and kicked them out. They yelled back “oh it’s cuz of our race!” To which I responded “nope. If you notice, I’m kicking out the entire group of you kids rather than pointing fingers. Now I know who broke the table due to my cameras. Now y’all can leave and we’re refusing any more service for tonight.” They still tried arguing and didn’t leave. So then after giving them a couple seconds to leave, and not doing so. I said “fine, let the cops handle this. Y’all cause way too much trouble every single time you come in.” While on the phone, they try to order more food. In the middle of the call, I yell at them, I already kicked you guys out. That means we’re automatically refusing service. Police are almost here. (Team member) cancel their order now.” They’re still trying to argue at the register at this point. Just then, police show up, while the kids are finally leaving. Cop asked what I wanted to do with them. I just simply said a ban on the 5 more troublesome ones. The 1 that broke the table, and 4 others that were arguing and harassing the rest of my workers. They then asked if I wanted to press charges. I said no but I was just going to plan to bill the 2 high schools for all the tables that they broke this school year (at $50 per table leg). After all was set and done, I get a call from one of the parents. He went on an entire rant and, like his son, played the whole race thing and how “they’re just kids” and “you’re really calling the police on kids? I tried explaining but he interrupted every time. Then I got my voice and said “do you want me to explain like you’re asking me or is this one sided cuz I will hang up right now.” He went quiet and let me explain. I shut him down right away, explained the whole situation, and further went to say, “whether he broke the table or not, he can still blame his peers for causing me to kick out the ENTIRE group. Not just 3 or 4 kids. How would you feel if I went to your place, trashed it, broke furniture, and left? I lived my entire life in this city, and we were never like that back in high school. We at least had the decency to represent our high school and actually respect the place we were going. And if you still believe that your kid just came home and said ‘(restaurant) kicked us out because of our race’ then that’s on you and this conversation can be over.” Of course he still wasn’t getting it. He mentioned something about the newspapers or whatever but I cut him off again “that still won’t change the fact that they vandalized this restaurant many times this year. This conversation is over. Have a great night. Don’t call back because we will not answer. I wrote down your number and any future calls to any of my team members will be considered harassment just like how you are now to me.” And never heard from them again. So am I the jerk? I feel I handled the situation as what I felt best for the restaurant.

On the first story, defo not the jerk. I live in England and my family owns an allotment. For a couple of years everything was fine, but then we started getting break ins. Power tools and mechical things would go missing. Shed doors would be smashed in and extensive damage caused. This happened 3 or 4 times until we finally got them plastered all over cctv. We sent them on Facebook and the parents immediately identified there kids and the police where sent to deal with them. I did have a BMX bike there that was stolen, thankfully I got it back but it was badly damaged. Bearing in mind these kids had been doing a lot of crimes around the village, you would expect them to be put away but no. Instead they where lot of with a warning. Really just a slap on the wrist.

These kids should have suffered consequences a while ago before it got to the point they thought it would be OK to try and steal a vehicle.

All I can say is that I think those kids will grow up to be good only because of how the consequences in their past caught up with them.

in the first story i side with the op here for sticking to their guy and pressing charges because if it wasnt for the op setting these kids straight who knows what there gonna commit next probably piss of a gang and get them selves killed so its good the op didnt decide to drop the charges.

There just kids is a kid banging a stick against a fense, or riding their bikes and making ramps out of misc wood scraps, or playing hide n seek around your neighbors back yard. maybe sneaking into an r rated movie. THAT is kids just being kids. But criminal mischief, grand theft auto, vandalism is NOT an excuse to they are just kids. That is an excuse to whoop their ass.

First Story- I agree. Age doesn’t matter. You do the crime, you do the time. I truly would have forced the kids and/or parents to pay for the repairs. I would have pressed charges and got really firm with the police officers. Second story- I’m glad I only go to ONE AND ONLY ONE movie theater for when I want to go see a movie, and that one is Alamo Drafthouse, there’s no worry of waiting in line for concessions or dealing with entitled people as the establishment has strict rules in place for disruptive people.

Honestly, i would agree with just kids if the parents actually punished the children or tried to come too an agreement for a punishment with the OP. But when you know that's not happening, then the legal system is the only good way to go.

As a person who grew up riding fourwheelers and bikes I never wanted to steal bc I didn’t like it but if I rode a motorcycle 🏍️ and I knew I couldn’t remove my starting key I would have a locking mechanism for the key you would have to go through hell to start it and my motorcycle would be a little flashy blacked out 16 inch ape hangers and have it painted as well so I can say it’s mine

Some people won't know you want them to do something without being told. I am like that, but my wife knows that if she wants me to do something she needs to tell me. Granted I know my usual chores but that's because I was told them when we moved in together and I've done these basic chores for so long I'm accustomed to it. He did take the dog out when asked so clearly he has to be asked or told "hey can you do X?"
