The story about OP checking the phone. I'm sorry but those are big red flags there and she needs to turn tail and get out fast. I had a friend who was doing illegal substances. At first the person didn't do it near me. It eventually spiraled to where not only was the person doing it in front of me but getting me to pay for it. I've distanced myself from that person. It had left me struggling even to this day. Even with me having my car down needing a lot of repairs. To OP..... she needs to get away from him.

This sounds like my relationship with my ex-husband. When he relapsed, things went downhill from there between our finances, my car, my job, etc was all at risk. Story #4: this triggered me into a panic attack! OP was describing my early marriage. At first it was EXACTLY what she was describing, but it changed into him punching a wall right next to me when I was hiding the car keys from him. After that incident he stopped drinking for a long time. Then he joined the military, where social drinking was the norm, that’s when things got a lot worse! He started beating me and sexually assaulted me. Every time he started drinking I would go to a safe house. I finally told him I wanted a divorce at the same time he got orders to go to Korea, so he asked me to wait until he returned. I agreed. He came back from Korea sober and was the man I fell in love with again. Then one weekend while I was out of town he went on a bender. When I arrived home he was this angry drunk (just like before Korea) , when I wouldn’t get out of the truck for him to drive off to help his drunk friend he punched the window right in front of my face. Needless to say I opened the truck door and hit him between the eyes and broke his nose. I got out of the truck walked into the house dead-bolted the door and called his Sargent. When my husband got back his Sargent was there waiting. I kicked him out. He asked to come back 2 weeks later to talk and get more of his things, I said yes. When he arrived at the house he was sober and hadn’t had a drink since the night of the incident. We talked and he FINALLY admitted to be an alcoholic, which he had never done before, and told me he was just like his biological father. I am happy to say he has been sober since April of 2003. Recently we have been going through a rough patch with him yelling at me a lot and being angry, I left for two weeks. He came up to see me where I was staying and I told him that every time he yells it brings back bad memories and makes me feel like he is going to start beating on me again. He admitted he has no memory of ever hitting me or sexually assaulting me because he was so drunk, but he apologized for putting me through it for the very first time. He has agreed to join me in my counseling session to work through the issues. We have been married for 32 1/2 years. Even though it worked out for us, I think it is very rare. My advice to the OP in regards to her boyfriend, she needs to get out before he turns on her. My husband was very loving and never treated me the way her BF does when we were dating. He never treated me the way her BF does when he was sober. My husband always treated me like I was his world and like I was precious when he was sober (he was sober more than drunk except during his first year in the military).

On the last story, don’t cancel the trip, if he wants to be a jerk about not going fine, still go and take somebody else with you that will actually appreciate it and then see what he does? This is to the op with the drinking partner. I have been the drunk and also been with drinks. The anger Will get out of hand. You need to give an ultimatum, period. Get help and stop drinking or you need to leave. Period. And if he doesn't stop and doesn't get help, leave. Because if he just stops, he will start again. He can't do it alone. No way. He would have to hit rock bottom. The best way you could help him is by leaving. Support him from living apart from him. But if he won't get help, there is nothing you can do, but if you stay you are enabling him. Becoming his excuse to drink. And if he he is aggressive, it will end in violence. So many women willingly become victims of their abusers because they love that person and don't want to leave. You are already a victim. He is abusing you by saying you are the cause of his drinking. It it very typical and happens all the time. You are already questioning if you did something. You didn't. If you don't do all you can do now, it will be too late. Please follow thru.

Story 4: Addicts who refuse to address their addiction and refuse to seek help are some of the worst people to be around, especially when they are addicted to something that potentially inhibits their ability to think rationally, and know when they should stop doing something deeply toxic or harmful. No one deserves to be abused or blamed for someone else's poor life choices. I hope OP moves out and fully educates themself on the reality of being in a relationship with an addict from the many support groups online and in person that can share their knowledge and story with OP, and that enables OP to make an educated decision on whether they want to stay in the relationship. Either way, I hope OP moves out to protect themself.

As someone who HATES surprises, I understand the boyfriend in the last story. But this guy was over the top with his reaction and sounds like he's very controlling. If someone gave me a gift, I wouldn't blow up and get upset at them. Most of the time people would give me things I don't like, but I always say "Thank you!". Also, I hate it when people constantly buys me gifts, which ties in with my issue with not liking surprises. If I want or need something, I'd rather buy it myself. My ex boyfriend would constantly buy me gifts and most of the time it was stuff I didn't like. Even though I told him over and over to stop buying me gifts, he wouldn't listen. After a while I just couldn't take it anymore and it was one of the reasons why I broke up with him. I know for some people that's a strange reason to break up with someone about.

The second story... Get tested for STDs. Pack up your stuff while he's at work, and get out. He's not going to change. But let his parents know what happened, the drugs, the cheating, and the “I love you text”. Then move on with your life, move back to the town with your family in it for support. What you should have done with that “I love you” text, text back, “this is his wife, who are you?”. This woman might not have known he has a live in girlfriend, AKA common law wife. She might be just as surprised as you were. Then the little cheating bugger can get yelled at by both of you. But seriously get out, and see a doctor to get tested. You don't know what he might have brought home. That's how a dear friend of mine got AIDS... Her cheating husband. It's no longer the death sentence it once was, but there's still no cure. There isn't a cure for herpes, and several others as well. And, nobody wants you after that either. 👵☮️🖖

The fact that he talked about “really wanting to go to Paris” in the past is completely irrelevant, but it’s how she keeps trying to justify it in her head.
