It's so weird that Tibalt's Trickery has an unnecessary milling effect, like yeah it prevents you from scrying or using Brainstorm or something to put a card back on top but that's such a weird edge case when the card's essentially designed to be a polymorph for spells instead of permanents.

I was really hoping for a playable merfolk in the newest set to really give the deck some extra support, but instead we get a bunch of limited merfolk that just aren’t particularly good for pioneer. The new simic counterspell could be an interesting inclusion, though too early to say for sure. And also a shame that the only card (so far) that makes a 1/1 merfolk token is a 5 drop gimmick enchantment. I’ve meanwhile had mixed feelings on running coco lately. While it does make for the most straightforward approach for getting a good 2-for-1, i’ve occasionally found it to be less impactful (and also very situational) compared to the more straightforward decks like angels, bant/5 color humans, and Amalia that seem to provide far more value off the creature etbs.

⁠@@demiurge2501sure, but for pioneer not a single playable merfolk was such a missed opportunity. Was also disappointing for Zegana, who was one of the story’s victims, to not get a card outside of murder.
