Next time you're in the market for plastic ammo cans... Try the MTM cans. They're a good bit stronger than the Planos in my opinion. They also don't have the taper top to bottom like the Planos.

There is a reason the military uses steel cans. Period. Plastic containers are fine for just storing but they do not take much abuse.

I have that same can and 500 rounds seems about it, I bought a bulk lot of reloads off PSA and they came in this can and it was filled to the top, with 20 round boxes I get 460-480 in it so I plan to stick with the boxes, its a little more orginized and allows me to keep diffrent grains in the same can.

I use Harbor Freight cans that go on sale down to $3 for the .30cal boxes and $6 for the 50. I try to do mostly 30s and I don’t use the box as often as I can since the plastic holds moisture. I always throw a few silicon packs in the case for moisture protection as well. For 9mm I get a full case of 1000 rounds in a 30cal plastic ammo can.
@Geoff920
@Geoff920 Жыл бұрын
Those boxes are junk. If you fill them up with ammo and lift them by the handle the top bends and breaks the seal, letting in air and water. They are only water resistant where the metal boxes are waterproof.

That’s how I used to roll, and then I realized that nothing comes close to the protection you get from military ammo cans.. Also it’s hard to get lot numbers from loose ammo if you ever blowup a firearm and might need them…

in my opinion, if you just put the ammo can in storage, plastics ones are the best because they don't have rust problems. Metal ones are the best for logistics since it's durable, that's why the military uses it.

I tend to agree, sitting in temp controlled environment and not moving, Plastic will work. If you are using it for range box, etc. Yes go metal.

Most of my ammo is in 30 cal military ammo cans because I can stack them higher and I don’t have to worry about it if I drop a loaded can. I also wanted something that is light enough for my wife to carry if we have to leave the house and we can toss them in the truck bed and they won’t crack open. Here in San Antonio, TX we don’t have a big issue with condensation moisture infiltrating the can but I still toss in a moisture absorber to be safe. Another good point on metal cans is they remain air/water tight even after rough handling. The metal cans can be used for other things and be tossed in a vehicle without having concern of damaging it so if I store more expensive items such as scopes, lasers, radios, etc (obviously I’d install foam padding in the can before putting expensive things in one. I’m like you on how I acquire ammo and other items, I buy little by little but sometimes a great deal can be found in bulk purchases when the seller offers free shipping which will lower the overall price per round. And this gentleman is correct, it’s wise to buy as much ammo and gun related items you plan to get pretty soon due to what the bank said to the public. Imagine if Biden issued an executive order stating only small bore calibers are the only ammo people are allowed to buy/sell? Or, shipping a firearm you bought online now has to go through a government shipping service and there’s all kinds of forms you have to fill out including a court and police records background check, we’ve seen the feds do crazy things without any public warning. If you’re tight on cash or credit, please consider bartering with people in exchange for ammunition, even if it’s digging a ditch, it’s an option. Most men have a couple hobbies/interests where they have a collection of rare and expensive items that’re possibilities in trading but in lieu of cash, trading will add about 15% to the price unless otherwise negotiated. Good luck friends, I wish you all well. Retired Army Infantry Senior NCO (1983-2009 all Active Duty time).

@@1968alaskan We’ve seen so many horrible things imposed on our fellow Citizens especially flooding our country with low IQ, low skill people that sap our public resources we pay for in taxes and sacrifices. I believe that when the feds do a firearm ban in some form, that’s when things will really get worse. So it’s not just firearms, it’s food, body armor, Christian religion and extreme infringements on our daily life if we don’t bow to their system. I couldn’t believe that our politicians/government would stoop so low to do false flag events to rally public fury against gun owners but I guess if there is no real gun violence that it needs to be fabricated. Obviously not all are fake events, just a large majority. I live near Ulvalde, TX and pass through there a few times a year and the truth is nowhere near what they told the public. But, to get the locals to play along, everyone has their price.

The plastic Plano is far and away a better storage option than metal. It is air tight doesn't sweat. doesn't rust and is the only way to go in a salt water environment. So how could it not be the best choice?

Nice but I’ll stick with the military ammo cans . They handle more stress and abuse and are proven watertight in all conditions. Yours are nice though for what you are using them for but I wouldn’t trust the handles or latches from breaking if you were moving them fully loaded in a shtf scenario.

Fair question. I see the .223 and 300 blackout more as a self defense weapon. To be honest, my favorite caliber is the .270 I have hunted big game since I was thirteen with that gun. In my 40's I stepped up to a 300 WSM over concerns of an encounter with a grizzly. Smaller game, like deer, caribou, sheep....I would think a .243 is plenty big. Bears have very thick hides much like a boar. Favorite up here for me is the .270 with 150 gr corelokt. Hope you get to make it up here also!
@echohunter4199

I was thinking the same. I’m from southeast Oregon on the Oregon High Desert (where real Americans live, lol) and using a larger caliber for elk is important for us for obvious reasons. I’ve heard up in your neck of the woods the elk and caribou get pretty big and some like the 6.8 SPC for both hunting wolf or defending from a bear attack but I have no idea of how well this would work. I prefer the 6.8 for hog hunting where I now live in San Antonio, TX and it does a great job but what caliber other than the 270 would you suggest for a Alaskan “truck gun”?

I agree, with an exception. Alaska for the most part is very dry (air is frozen) There are times (spring and fall) where condensation is an issue, IF...storing in a car or shed outside. These are stored inside at 68 degrees and very dry! i.e. my cigar humidor needs liquid every 2 weeks. So it is an issue of where you live and where you store. But I do agree, Metal is much better.

Sorry you have had such bad luck. Me personally they work as I intended. They stay in a warm space, I have moved all of them "full" many times. I don't take 500 or 1,000 to the range, so they work great sitting on my floor stacked nicely. Range box, at most carries a few hundred. I can't afford a $500 range day. So far no regrets for my intended purpose. I would like to have full metal can's for range box. Thanks for your input, If you can afford 20 or 50 metal cans, by all means I highly recommend the quality side of them.
