In this week's video, we take a look at the stopping power of the .357 SIG. We are firing into synthetic ballistics gel at approximate FBI Standards with 125gr FMJ and JHP. We also look at the difference in controlled firing speed in a mag dump, as well as a 50 meter shot into ballistics gel.
Thanks for watching. New videos post every Thursday!

Back in 1999, an agency I worked with was at the time looking for a new duty caliber. Prior to that time, patrol officers were using the SIG P226 with first generation 147 grain loads. Performance with these rounds was dismal. The load over-penetrated and rarely expanded properly. Oddly enough, SWAT officers were allowed to use the 124 grain +P Hydra-Shok load in the same pistol, which worked significantly better. The city was looking to acquire new pistols with interchangeable backstraps so that they only had to issue one model of pistol to suit different hand sizes. SIG Sauer suggested the then-new SIG PRO polymer frame pistol. Our first step was to choose a caliber. Officers felt that the poor performance of the 9mm (at the time) would be a morale issue. So before settling on a new pistol and cartridge, we rotated 100 officers through the range and allowed them to give feedback, while monitoring qualification scores, using the .40 S&W, the .357 SIG, and the .45 ACP. The overwhelming choice of the rank and file was the .357 SIG. It had less muzzle flip than the .40 or the .45. Officers did say that it seemed louder than the other two cartridges, and it was, but that was the only complaint. We received 700 SIG PROs in that caliber and brought officers through the range to turn in their P226's, ammo, and holsters. They would qualify with the .357 SIG and then be issued the pistol they had just shot. Duty ammo was the Speer Gold Dot 125 grain JHP, which at the time exited the barrel of the duty pistol at about 1,450 fps. Feed reliability was excellent. Qualification scores were quite good. Over the next 24 months, the department was involved in 14 actual shootings, all but one of which was resolved with one shot. Based on feedback from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Speer did cut the 125 grain duty load back to 1,350 fps, which allowed for faster follow-up shots while maintaining the same overall performance. This is a very good round, and so is the Federal HST 125 grain load. Although perhaps not a big deal for urban officers, the .357 SIG is also a very flat shooting load. When 9mm duty rounds were gradually upgraded with better projectiles, there was less reason for police departments to choose the .357 SIG, but some of the officers I knew were reluctant to give up the successful bottlenecked round. As you have mentioned, this round these days can be hard to find, and somewhat expensive when you do. I have a SIG P226 that is configured to shoot 9mm, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG, and while any of them these days are fine, my preference is still for the .357.

I appreciate the information you've provided, I was a .40 s&w guy for a very long time, but I stumbled upon the .357 sig and it had some of the best reviews from "real" legit shooters out there that I could find, with its extremely high velocity and the accuracy it has downrange I believe it's a far superior round than the 9mm, I currently carry a glock 31 gen 4 running either Grizzly 90 grain at 2100fps or Underwood 90 grain at 1750 fps, I've been shooting since I was 5 and I'm legally blind in my left eye.....I shoot a 4-6 inch group at 40 yds with this round consistently, I'm not carrying anything but .357 sig.....ever......

How do you explain effectiveness of the .223 round? Light, but fast, which translates to higher KE. I’m sure you’re referring to less barrier penetration/less momentum. Lighter rounds also have less felt recoil and often allows faster follow up shots. Maybe a gimmick, but it has clear benefits. Having said that, I wouldn’t carry it hahaha

I have a Glock in .357sig. I've had it for a couple of years, but the ammo situation, during this period, made .357sig pretty much impossible to find and I hadn't shot it much. Not enough for form any real opinion about it. With the availability and price having become much better, lately, I was able to pick up 400 rounds of 125gr fmj. Was at the range for a couple of hours, yesterday and shot about 60 rounds. .357sig has a pretty loud bang but wasn't hard to shoot or punishing. Found I could shoot it fairly fast and get good groups at 7 yards. Yes, it does shoot very flat. I had first dialed in two AR 15s that had new optics installed and shot 50 rounds of 9mm through a new Springfield Armory 911. Sort of a break in and reliability test. It performed flawlessly. The .357sig was the last gun I shot, that day. First, I'll state that I'm 75 years old and not as strong or physically stable as I was a few years ago. That said, I found the .357sig fairly easy to shoot and to shoot well. Before leaving the range, I loaded six rounds and shot, standing, off hand at a 14 inch gong at 100 yards and hit it 4 out of 6 times. Yeah, flat shooting and accurate. I've finally formed an opinion about the .357sig. I like it, a lot.

@@norrisdillahuntjr4570 About any pistol caliber is going to perform better out of a full-size handgun, especially hot rounds like 357 SIG, 357 Magnum, 44 Magnum, and so on. My point was 357 SIG isn't the recoil monster people make out. If I can shoot it comfortably in a subcompact, most shooters should be able to in a full-size like a G31. Recoil-shy shooters probably should lean toward calibers like 22lr, 22 Magnum, 38 Special low-recoil loads on a large frame, and so on. If you have arthritis or something impacting you, those make more sense than 357 Sig, but 75% of shooters should be okay in a G31.

A KZbinr averaged 634 foot pounds from a G32 using Underwood 125 grain bonded JHP ( Gold Dot). That’s insane. And it’s what I carry in my SIG P239. Thank you for continuing to shed light on this awesome caliber. Is 9mm equal to or superior to 357 Sig? Let’s think about that for ourselves for just a moment, shall we? I get it that some people pick a side and feel the need to defend their choice, but not to the extent of regurgitating pure nonsense that they themselves were misinformed on. Some ammo manufacturers actually have loads that even surpasses the ballistics of traditional 357 magnum performance. Underwood's 357 SIG Gold Dot for example. Also because it’s a bottleneck cartridge it has the added benefit of feeding more reliably than other pistol rounds. It’s flat shooting and will punch through auto glass like it was butter. It’s literally a 9mm projectile “except” because it’s 225-300 fps faster it penetrates most barriers as well as 10mm yet doesn’t over penetrate flesh, which is welcomed to aid in avoiding collateral damage. It has a flatter trajectory that in turn makes it more accurate and potent at distance. Though the penetration is no greater than 9mm in flesh, the cavity damage is much more devastating making it more likely to stop a threat with less shots. Underwood has a 357 Sig 65g Xtreme Penetrator round that exceeds 2250+ fps out of just a 6” barrel. I don’t know of any other semiautomatic pistol caliber that has rounds capable of such velocities from a handgun. It goes straight through a 3A panel even. At those velocities normally temporary cavities tear. One of the most attractive benefits of owning a 357 Sig is the ability to convert the firearm to 40 S&W & 9mm with nothing more than a simple barrel swap. You also normally can do a 357 Sig or 9mm conversion if you own a 40 S&W firearm as well. That means you can train on whatever platform you’re most comfortable with and whatever ammo is the most affordable, and no it isn’t always 9mm. That means that you are less hindered by ammo shortages… and when you’re done training simply swap out the barrel and ammo back to 357SIG and you’re all set. Sadly on a native 9mm firearm you don’t have any option to do a conversion. I never understood what’s not to like about 357 SIG… well other than ammunition availability and cost being the only negatives I guess, but it is the better round. Keep in mind that when you compare 9mm +P or +P+ to try to achieve 357 Sig performance, 357 Sig is actually cheaper than 9mm. When I searched +P+ to get as close to 357 Sig performance as possible, it was more expensive than a standard 357 Sig JHP round. 9mm +P+ is still only 1300 fps in 124 grain. That’s 50 fps slower than the lowest end 125 grain Sig round at 1350 fps and we’re comparing +P+ 9mm ammo here. Yet the bare minimum 357 Sig performance isn’t even achievable and this is usually attempted in a platform that isn’t even recommended for +P+ or even +P at times. I say it’s best to swap to a 9mm conversion barrel when training and back to 357 Sig right before you’re all done to finish up with 357 to cut that expense down. In most cases the recoil of any superior round can be overcome with training. I actually have little to no recoil on one of my setups. It’s compensated. You’ll find that comps actually provide greater compensation with 357 Sig compared to 9mm because of the higher pressures. I do understand that some people are recoil sensitive and are more comfortable with 9mm or other lower recoiling rounds. I understand some just prefer the thought of higher capacity. I totally understand your decisions. But let’s not bash any superior round because you prematurely decided on a specific one. Naturally shot placement, especially with pistol calibers is key… but under pressure understandably, your shot placement could be lacking. With that in mind the welcomed advantages of 357 Sig could easily make the difference between life and death, shot placement aside. There’s nothing wrong with 9mm it’s awesome, but let’s be clear… it isn’t equal to 357 Sig and the few extra rounds it’s capable of holding in a magazine over 357 Sig definitely doesn’t make it the superior choice. In time I expect 357 Sig to make the comeback that 10mm has made in recent years… For myself these 357 Sig advantages make 9mm less desirable. How about for you?

@@justin_ogre I have no problem believing that it produces 2000+ fps with that light bullet. My local gun store ordered some of the Lberty Civil Defence +p 357 sig, for me. Like the 9mm version, it uses a 50 grain projectile and claims a velocity of 2300 fps.

@@theinstructor2687 Yeah, the Liberty stuff is Hot. In tests that I have seen, There is an explosion in the gel within the 1st 6" inches as the hollow sheds its petals, but then the rest of the slug seems to have trouble penetrating past 14inches if i remember right. Still If it produces the hydrostatic shock that it's claiming any center of mass hit near the heart should stop it even if it's not directly in the path of the hollow point. I would love to be able to take both of these rounds and go hog hunting and see how things really perform.

357 sig only really starts to get snappy in smaller handguns. The 33 is borderline. I have a shield that’s ported and I have a 357 sig barrel in it. It’s pretty snappy as well, but as with any gun, it just takes getting used to. I’ve never fired a 31 or 32 but I’ve fired a sig p226 and M&p 5 inch FDE in 357 sig and it’s no different than a 40 cal out of bigger guns.

The S&W M&P 2.0, is a much better platform for 40sw and 357sig. Hey, I was Glock Glock Glock for many years. I had gen 1 G17 and G20. I frequently shot 40sw out of the G20 so all the "snappy" talk( which only started a few years ago) was lost on me anyway. Then I demoed a M&P 2.0 in 40sw and now I have a 5"pro and a 3.5" compact. Both have KKM 357sig barrels. I reload 135 and 150 Nosler over Longshot with magnum pistol primers( I am out of them now) for practice loads. The POI and report/flash are close enough to 357sig carry ammo as not to worry much( @ 25yards) One last note: The compact M&P is probably more efficient with Underwood 150grn. 40sw than any of the 357sig loads( I don't think the short barrel can burn the powder fast enough). This is all tested with Hillbilly media like water jugs, 2×4 scraps and old junk cars. The closer you can get to 357 magnum TERMINAL ballistics, the better. Fast, rapid expanding bullets that can deliver at least 525ft lbs of energy, will cause capillary concusions (pulminary pressure spike.) An unconscious man can not fight.

I carried a gen2 G31 for 20 years with swappable barrels for 40 & 9mm ( to save ammo costs). I bought a P229 Elite that came with a 357S & 40 barrel as well as a modern 9mm complete upper. There is nothing wrong with any of the 3 calibers. The 357S & 40 just deliver significantly more mass on target at the cost of a small amount of recoil and a 2 round loss (in my experience) in the magazine. People will go on & on about those 2 extra rounds. If it's that important, you're either in need of a PDW or team member. Or a rifle. 40 & 357S are both great calibers.

Yes , 357 has 33% less recoil and momentum than 165 grain .40. Felt recoil is a measure of momentum leaving the barrell. Between two projectile with the same energy - 506 foot pounds - pick the one that achieved that energy with a bigger, heavier bullet. 357 is awesome but 165 grain 40 is even more awesome.

Boss, I’m surprised you just don’t bench rest your guns to hit the jelly. Even a pair of shooting sticks (used for rifle or pistol distance shots while hunting) works fabulously. Even sitting with your elbows resting on the table will help you stabilize your stance to hit the target where you want it. Non the less, your videos rock.

However, the recoil looks similar to that upward snap you get from both .40 S&W and 10mm, of course more of the slightly lighter snap of the .40 S&W instead of the push you get from most other calibers.

I believe the 357 Sig is hands down the best midsize caliber going. It's a shame it didn't catch on more than it did. All the talk about how projectile design has improved allowing the 9mm Luger to be satisfactory ignores the fact that it makes the other calibers better as well. Is it a 45 Casull ? No, but it doesn't require a 45-50 oz handgun either and is about 40% more powerful than a 9mm Luger.
