Today I travel up to McLaren Boston to preserve a McLaren MP4-19B Formula 1 race car driven by David Coulthard. The paint is not very thick to conserve weight...which makes it a special challenge to compound and polish without burning thru the livery. Later in the episode we interview Colin Ashlaw to understand its place in Formula 1 history as well as how it relates to road going or "street legal" super cars of today. Hope you enjoy a full detail on the only Mercedes McLaren MP4-19B in the United States. Thx for watching! -Larry

Edit. I wanna add here that this isn't meant as any hate towards the owner, its his car so he can obviously do whatever he wants with it :) I really dont understand why you as an owner want a car like that detailed, in my opinion the dirt adds so much to the story. But at least we got a nice video out of it! Probably my fav. Video right next to the McLaren F1 one.

I don't give a d**m about dirt. Patina is one thing, dirt is not. To me, small scratches are not part of the patina unless they are part of usage. Scratches from hands in the cockpit are ok. Scratches on a random part of the bodywork can go.

Not trying to pedantic but your F1 "Historian" saying this was the first time F1 cars were producing over 900 hp is badly mistaken. The turbo engined cars of the 80's were producing well over 1,000 hp in qualifying trim and over 900 in race trim. The BMW in line 4 of that era famously produced almost 1,500 hp. No doubt that the V10's in these cars were possibly the best F1 engines ever, but you shouldn't make definitive statements like that especially when they are wrong.

You speak of being pedantic, yet you didn't even listen to what he said. He said 'handily' having 900hp. Those engines back in the day were ticking time bombs, where an engine and other drive train components were consumable not only from round to round, but from session to session. The engine in the video and its era were genuine, no BS, signed sealed and delivered 900hp machines, that could comfortably and reliably make that day in, day out. Engine failures were almost non existent.
@XBullitt16X
@XBullitt16X 4 жыл бұрын
Glad I'm not the only one who caught that, F1 cars have been producing far more than 900hp for decades now.
@ryanhoffmann9341
@ryanhoffmann9341 4 жыл бұрын
@@dons1932 I'd ask you to back up this claim. Yes in QUALIFYING trim these engines were only good for a few laps, but that wasn't bacause they were badly built or designed, it was because that was the best interpretation of the rules at the time. It wasn't like it is now where teams get a set number of engines and after that your done, or start getting huge grid penalties. I can guarantee if teams were allowed to use as many engines as possible you would see the same thing today. Also, I'm pretty sure Honda has had a mass of engine failures over the past few years, many more than almost any other time in history. If these engines blew up all the time during the race the entire grid would not have been running them for three years.

I'm too lazy to go back and check.. but im 99.9a% sure thats not what he said or meant otherwise it woulda triggered me as well. Basically saying that road cars have zero limits with aero work so they can do some wild things. Like the movable canards and wing on a Senna. That wouldnt be allowed on an F1 car. Ofcourse F1 cars have better aero in a race application, also helps tremendously that they weigh next to nothing and the mechanical grip is insane due to insane suspension and so forth.

@@ryanhilden1443 What's beneficial for one person, is bad for the next. So like i said, Turbulence is still the worst thing. Drag happens regardless.
@wadud92
@wadud92 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but actually no. Side skirts and floors create a lot of downforce, with next to no drag. Sure skirts are banned and floors are very heavily restricted. But engineers have figured ways around drag/downforce balance before and will do so again. The last time they figured it out was only in 09 with the double diffuser
@Themayseffect
@Themayseffect 4 жыл бұрын
@@wadud92 Wrong. It creates vacuum which is negative pressure. That negative pressure is stored somewhere...and that somewhere is on the underside of the car. If the pressure is released (or stabilized), a huge amount of force is lost and you get a massive loss in grip. This is considerably more dangerous than drag and turbulence in the worst cases. This is exactly why high vacuum skirts were banned early on.
@Themayseffect
@Themayseffect 4 жыл бұрын
Also there is still a lot of pressure and force transferred to the chassis with high vacuum. If the chassis isn't designed correctly, you can have a negative balance on the suspension and power unit. Causing poor ride quality and gearbox problems. Again...something already tried and tested decades ago. However it is possible with recent changes to start implementing these attributes without all the massive problems. Or at least considerably reduced.

Car turned out to be phenomenal and great job as always guys. Two things I've noticed. The Johnnie Walker decals on the top are added afterwards to the car. None of the MP4-19 & MP4-19B models in the 2004 season had Johnnie Walker on the car. They appeared first in 2005 in the Hungarian Grand Prix after signing a deal with each other in 2005 with 2 variants in the remaining races (fully horizontal design and like in this car). Second at 13:38 the engine sounded like a Williams BMW instead of a Merc, probably the FW23 or FW24. :P

Larry, an amazing video as always. I've got a note to make, or rather would like to ask you to do something. I've noticed you've been guiding the Senna in at 2:43, please never stand between a wall and parking car. 15 years ago while working at a dealership I've been spotted by the main boss doing same thing as you. Even though the car was worth more than my home he explained that no metal, plastic or carbon fiber is worth more than my legs. All assets are insured but all it takes is a shoe slipping off the pedal. From my own experience with all sort of cars (vintage up to modern super cars) I know how that type of mistakes can be made and some drivers do odd things in a panic situation.
