The way I see it, they could've either delivered a revolutionary game like The Dark Descent was at the time, or they could deliver an Amnesia game. They delivered an Amnesia game. I absolutely loved it but there's no doubt that it retreaded a lot of the same ground as The Dark Descent, and anyone can see that this is probably the end of the rope for this particular story. Unless they want to move away from horror entirely and just give us an unsettling Myst game where we play as Agrippa and Daniel travelling between dimensions, in which case I would love that too.

Story-wise, SOMA is heaps better than anything in the horror genre and a definite step up. The only problem was the gameplay in Soma was a fairly large step backwards. The puzzles are some of the least interesting in Frictional Games' library, and the monster sections are a complete afterthought.

SOMA is one of the best video game stories of all time. It's up there with Planescape Torment and Silent Hill 2 for me. It's legitimate Sci-Fi that poses interesting questions about what it means to be human. That being said... The gameplay is turbo shit. The monsters are boring, irritating and unthreatening. They totally kill the pacing and feel like they were added into the game at gunpoint. There's no extra mechanics to make monster evasion even feel like a meaningful mechanic. The devs patched in a mode where they don't attack you and it's the better way to play the game. It's such a huge shame. If they took the monsters out and reformatted the game to include more complicated puzzles or other elements it could have been a masterpiece. Still it's story is pretty bulletproof. I've never seen better Sci-Fi in a video game before. Was in awe at the ending.

As long as a game can convince the player they are in danger then it doesn't matter how much actually danger there is. The game "Bunker 16" demonstrates this as it has no actual in game way to die besides the end, yet it still retains the tension and fear as if there was. The game never felt padded to me, mainly due to the narrative flowing with what was happening around you. I was invested start to finish. Monster designs are no where near as important as the danger you perceive as a player from them. The game here was a much more refined version of it's predecessor, and it can be seen by how mature the narrative is and how the layout of the world is. Walking through the deserts, it immersed me so much I had to stop sprinting to truly soak in all the environments. Their gameplay mechanics tie in with the narrative in such a fun way, something TDD never did. I feel like so many people overlooked so much of this game because they're only wanting blood pumping action alone, but that's not what this games strength is. It's the fact that it intertwined the gameplay and the narrative in such a unique way, and it's sad that everyone's claiming that the games done nothing different when there is a world of difference between it's predecessor. As for the graphics, they're beautiful. It runs on a new engine. For the record, Soma was made on a different, newer engine since TDD, and Rebirth's is running on another that's even newer. Unless you're comparing graphics to triple A titles, which is completely unfair as this is from a small Indie Dev team, the graphics are fantastic. I never grew up with the original, so I never had that bias towards it. The game was really good, don't get me wrong, but this one is much more refined and innovative than the prior. I think people simply have a bias for the original.
@MrQuantumInc4 жыл бұрын
Frictional knows how to do one type of game really well. Weirdly they had a previous series with the exact same formula as Amnesia, "Penumbra" but nobody cared until Amnesia. So naturally Rebirth is kinda the same and if you are feeling tired with the genre even a little bit Rebirth will not feel special. Odd tangent, but this illustrates Gabe Newell's nightmare that blocked Half Life 3's creation all of this time. "Its from this great company the revolutionized the genre, but it is essentially the same as what came before so I feel weirdly disappointed." If someone said that about Half Life 3 they would put Gabe Newell on suicide watch.

Contrary to many other people being disappointed, I personally have SOMA on my list of top three games of all time. It's the only horror game there. Rebirth doesn't make it, but is worth your time nad money. I really liked the game. Although was barely scared. One thing that really did scare me was SPOILERS - - - The ghoul hive or what it was. After dealing with max a few at a time, walking into that cave was an absolute shock that had me running in the other direction until realizing I had to get through it somehow. Going through that cave was incredibly tense. Game was overall really cool. Had a lot of minor moments that at least disturbed me. Such as watching yourself in the fountain in the end, and feeding your child and seeing your mutated body doing it. Felt wrong. However, I only pushed through because of the story and most of the monster encounters weren't that terrifying. Particularly the light bearing monsters were never really spooky, although they looked cool. Contrary to many other players, I never really understood their mechanics, but that still didn't make them scare me. The Other World was cool enough, but didn't really meet the Lovecraftian feel the first game was hinting at imo. There's some examples on KZbin of game engines using non-euclidian space that Rebirth could really have shone using, however those kinds of engines are extremely taxing on a performance level and probably outside the scope of an indie studio to properly make work. It would open up a lot of options for puzzle design however. Think of what Portal did. But yea, I was barely afraid going through the game, even if I pushed through, wanting to know what was going on, and bace really invested in the kid. I scare easy btw. I wear it on my shoulders. It's why I love horror games so much. Game also had some really cool puzzles that took more work than previous titles.

I think its interesting how certain studious seem to be either good at Innovation or Iteration. The studios that really revolutionize a genre are rarely the same ones that make the best games in that genre. Correction: It runs on a improved newer version of the Amnesia TDD engine (HPL2 engine as opposed to HPL1) which among other things allow for real outdoor environments(remember the weird "street" sequences in Machine for Pigs that felt like a big room with a sky painted ceiling? Well they were) as well as slightly better lighting effects and shaders, same which SOMA ran I think. On a Interview Thomas Gripp aknowledged the engine is a tad dated but they decided to go with it because of the team's familiarity with it and it's ease of use, as well as the fact that being an openGL and extremely light engine it runs on pretty much any computer, you don't even need a graphics card, and honestly it doesn't look so bad because the art direction is pretty great imho.

Did Yahtzee just misuse “ironically” at the start? :O

It was a pun on amnesia.

Yes, I would argue that he did misuse "ironically". Forgetting something called "Amnesia" would be strangely appropriate, not ironic.

So very funny with calling Amnesia: Rebirth by different names. Also very funny with the imps with the giant hammer, and the kip imp saying he ate the soap. "I am a ghost. Or am I?" :D LOLed at "c**k buffet". :D

Agreed with some of your points here, although its hard to consider P.T a real game, since it wasn't actually released, and RE7, well I don't consider that a "new height" by any means. In fact, the design of that game is "lacking" to say the least. The game is supposed to utilize stealth elements but does so poorly. To do stealth, you need some sort of feedback to indicate an enemy is near, and/or onto you. Like the original Amnesia, when the grinding noise, and music starts when I monster sees you. It tells you its time to hide somewhere. In RE7, its already too late, and the chase stops after a short while.

I normally don't play any Amnesia games because its not my thing (high anxiety)... my friend made me play this and it had me rolling floor with how bad and off topic the storyline can get. I looked at my friend and commented its just a few controls shy of being Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons....

I like to think that Isaac Clarke was the original protagonist who got his butt whooped in every cut scene.
