I think a bigger problem was how much the game is similar to BotW, so all you one can say is, 'It's like BotW but...' Western game makers have outstanding vision, but lack originality. Eastern game makers are vice versa. If only we could combine the two outlooks, this game would have been better.

Just a reminder that it's not their fault if the name kinda sucks: Monster energy forced them to change the name because it had "monster" in it so they argue that consumer would be "confused". @@ALifeOfWine Chances are Monster Energy didn't bother with a case there because MHW is made by Capcom, a Japanese company. There's a whole level of language and translation issues they probably couldn't be bothered to contend with. Ubisoft caters primarily to an English language market.
@francesco8000
@francesco8000 3 жыл бұрын
@@ALifeOfWine The difference is that Monster hunter is an established franchise with multiple games so now it's too late to complain. It probably slipped under the radar because it was just a japanese game that no one knew when the original was made (almost 2 decades ago). Immortal phoenix (Gods and Monsters originally) on the other hand is a title made by Ubisoft so they instantly noticed it. Sky tried to do the same thing with "no man's sky" but failed. In this situation Ubisoft could have won probably but they simply didn't want to be bothered and told the team to change the name.

I have been saying this for months. BotW was a rebuttal to the Ubisoft model. It was a game intended to show what was missing in open worlds that feel fake, with icons haphazardly strewn about everywhere. It is a game that contains a sense of discovery, specifically discovery of an already extant place that is real and vibrant and full of life. It's an extraordinary achievement and trying to replicate it with the specific design principles it refutes is just sad

You know what would be interesting? Instead of the Greek or Norse pantheons, why not have a game where the mythology is based around West African gods and heroes? Like, how about you have a series of side-quests that are based on the stories of Anansi, the spider god who won stories for mankind? Or, a mission where you have to either stop or assist in the destruction of a town where a cruel old woman and the literal, actual Devil are betting on which of them could cause the most destruction and chaos in said town? You know, change it up for once.

There's a lightness of tone and absence of stakes that I find incredibly refreshing. Its a good game to sit down at and just feel.. nice. Combat is punchy enough to be exciting (though admittedly, its not very hard). Puzzles are simple enough not to get frustrating, but in depth enough not to get boring. First he talks about how Rage 2s mechanics needs a world like breath of the wild to properly grow and now he's retroactively praised the weapons durability for varying fights in comparison to this game. Are we like a couple smug annoyingly quippy protagonists away from Yahtzee going "Link may have the emotional range of a wooden blank drowned in epoxy, but at least he's not actively annoying my bollocks into reverse puberty" or something?

Twilight Princess was darker but looked good at the time and for the hardware that was out. Once again people either liked the darker atmosphere or they hated the lack of color scheme. This video is further proof to me that the interactions of systems in breath of the wild is something that can't just be replicated and a lot of that creativity comes from the weapon degradation. Everything is face-value with fenyx and Genshin but botw has so many game design choices and mechanics that allow imagination. I truly wish I understood what people were talking about in regards to BoTW; to me, it was a mediocre open world game with a pile of unique annoyances on top and nothing more, sometimes with some classic annoyances like terrible instant-loss stealth being added on top. I wanted to like it, but nothing, and I mean nothing, about it was particular fun in and of itself and it constantly missed opportunities or just annoyed me. Shrines were the only particularly fun part and so many of those were either the same miniboss I've already fought several times or they were motion controlled or they were nothing at all and many of the rest were stupidly short. Breakable weapons might add something, but all they really did was force constant menuing with terrible menus and make every weapon feel weak, the Master Sword has never been worse and hardly even fits this type of game. Being able to pause and heal with your entire inventory of ingredients, on top of however many full heals you decided to make, means that the only challenge there ever is is if an enemy surprise kills you in one hit. There isn't much enemy variety and they mainly get harder by making them have more health, which just makes the fights take longer. The only real reward for exploring is shrines; weapons are too fleeting and korok seeds lose their luster after only a small fraction of them. Maybe you'll get armor, but most of that is in shrines or shops. There are only three base weapon types and one of them is a slow and heavy weapon that's only practical against a sleeping target, so most of the time only two are practical. Many unique things are locked behind amiibo's, and what you get from them is RNG. Link's stamina is abysmal and it's incredibly unfun to run out while running around, but it's going to happen constantly until you fully upgrade it. You can't climb during the rain, which is "realistic" except Link's Spiderman climbing could not be farther from realism and you can manually switch time to get rid of it, rendering the rain as just another chore you have to deal with when it randomly happens. The game still does have its moments of course, that's why I think it's mediocre and not merely bad, but I don't get how people ignore or simply don't care about all of these things. None of them are huge on their own but they just drag the experience so much that it's hard to enjoy what good there is, and even that isn't very impressive overall.

Anyone remember the Dr Who game from the early 80's where the only 2 mechanics were move and warp? Every time the Dr moves in the single screen, the large number of Darleks scattered around the screen move towards you. To escape the screen you have to find the sequence of moves that will let you make it out without touching one of the Darleks. The warp is a Defender style hail mary. You might get away from the Darlek about to touch you, only to warp into a group of them. It was simple, but hey this was when Beserk was considered the height of intense science fiction gaming. I just used my imagination to fill in the story and the Dr making his usual quips in a British accent I found hilarious as a kid. Darleks. Useful game villains and surprisingly incisive marriage counsellors.

As someone else said, the story reminds me of a Spyro game. The platforming and puzzle solving is excellent and reminds me of Banjo Kazooie. The combat is like God of War but easier. And the exploration is like BOTW mixed with AC. It’s okay to take ideas when they are good. This game has taken things I have loved over the years in video games and made a “greatest hits” of a game to appeal to everyone. Also, I wanted to add, it really seems like Yahtzee went IN on this game yet stayed praising the overhyped, damn near lied about, garbage that is Cyberpunk 2077.

weapon degrading doesn't add anything to a game besides annoyance though

I literally just bought this game and for the life of can not stop playing sure it gets repetitive after a while but fuck me up my nostrils if it isn’t addictive

I think we can excuse the name, it was originally called Gods and Monsters but Monster Energy got all pissy about their trademark even though it was completely unrelated to their product and impossible to mix up with them, so Ubisoft was forced to change it.
