i agree with you, it's extremely disturbing :S though depressing at it is, i think it's better to look at what we do have power to change rather than what we don't, as no human is omnipotent, but we all are a lot more powerful than we think. the letters i send as a member of amnesty are a small gesture , but i think it's very important to show we haven't forgotten these people who are being tortured...it's depressing to think that some won't be released, but amnesty has had many successes too

If torture is permitted when it is illegal then nobody is safe from arbitrary state power and our security is lessened not enhanced. Since many innocent people are convicted after due process of law, the number of innocent people tortured when there is no process will be way higher. This means it could happen to anyone and frequently people are tortured for information they do not possess.

My heart goes with those who have gone through this. Sometimes I wish that God personally could come here on Earth and make suffering and injustices to go away. Why can't we all be as beautiful as we appear on the outside. Whatever happened to spiritual qualities?!

Read the story of Victor Jare of Chile an activst and singer who was tortured and killed by the Pinochet regime. It is heartbreaking and if you have any emotion of any kind it will make you cry.

many of the people held at guantanamo were innocent, e.g binyam mohammed, held there for 6-7 years and tortured, until they were suicidal...just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time...how is that fair? also if you were being tortured enough, you would confess to anything to make it stop..even if you were innocent...what we need are fair trials, not false justification to abuse people...

Keep in mind that one man, let alone one group of people never represents a nation. I am an American and I disagree with the Bush policies. There is nothing inherently evil about belonging to any country. Take Iran for example. They have done tortures and executions for far pettier crimes (being gay, for example). Yet, I do not judge an Iranian based on his government, and treat all people individually.
