As a former Correctional Officer, there are a lot of problems with this experiment, even by the old standards of the time. One did not become an officer without some modicum of training, even in those days. So already the experiment was flawed. As well as inmates aren't always called by their DOC/BoP number. I havent been able to even go into a convenience store because of the anxiety since my release in 2004. Even my Doctors make special accommodations for me so I can avoid the people and the inevitable panic atack. That said, I firmly believe solitary isolation is a necessary evil to insure the safety of the Corrections Officers as well as fellow inmates. Did you know that another psychologist did this experiment with only girls, and it lasted the whole 2 weeks without a problem at all. Also, that the newspaper advertised seeking volunteers for “a psychological study of prison life.” In a 2007 study, the psychologists Thomas Carnahan and Sam McFarland asked whether that wording itself may have stacked the odds. They recreated the original ad, and then ran a separate ad omitting the phrase “prison life.” They found that the people who responded to the two ads scored differently on a set of psychological tests.

i'd be able to survive, only because I've had a similar experience before. I voluntarily went into one of the worst psych-wards that exists, and they treated all of us like prisoners, even to the point we where given and referred to by numbers, not names. we where treated poorly by staff and if we didn't behave they'd threaten to throw you into ward 3 which everyone else called "hell" as they had adult patients in there (I was in the childs as I was and still am under 25) mixed with the children in a concrete jungle, where there was no security, and all the doctors where hidden in a bulletproof glass room and would not come out if something happened to you (they also keep new "patients" in there for the first 24 hours, which lead to me witnessing and experiencing first hand the lack of shits the doctors gave as I was molested by a 40 something year old man right in front of their little box and they did nothing about it) most of the ward was made of concrete and the beds where all steel based with latex mattresses with a thin blanket and one hard as rock pillow. we had a bathroom that consisted of a toilet and shower that where right next to each other, ward 3 was worse as it had a SHARED shower and bathroom, that had no lock. which might explain why ward 3 smelt like piss because I bet you there where other people like me SO SCARED of being raped or molested in that bathroom that they resorted to pissing on the floors in there room, because at least the bedrooms had a lock. the other part of the ward wasn't the best either, the main ward for children, ward 2 was still concrete but in the main hall it had some carpets, a couch, a tv that was surrounded by a bullet proof glass box, dining tables and a water dispenser. and in that one, at least each room had its own bathroom, but the issue was that late at night when the nurses where doing their rounds and checking in each room for each patient, they wouldn't lock the doors, this lead to me waking up with a crazy guy at the end of my bed staring at me. The nurses where very dehumanizing to us, and if we expressed any concern about their practices or their dehumanizing way of speaking they would threaten to tell the main psychiatrist that we've been misbehaving and that we might need to go to ward 3 for a while. Now I never misbehaved once, I never raised my voice, swore, did threatening gestures or even scowl. I was in there voluntarily as I believed it could get me connected to services I needed because of my depression, anxiety and to help my suicidal thoughts. I never did anything wrong there except for crying and having panic attacks (mostly during the molestation indecent and the guy in my room indecent) Before that I thought we had gotten over the horrible ways we treat mentally troubled people, but I discovered that at least this ONE ward, they treat them like prisoners and not people. I was just D13 to them, a letter and number on a sheet. And the nurses seemed to have lost all compaction, one of the girls they treated badly alot and seemed to get the most frustrated by was a 10 year old autistic girl called Olivia, that they called C07. They got frustrated so much with her because she had a speech impediment along side her inability to understand social cues. which meant they couldn't understand her half the time. And if you could treat a 10 year old like that, then I don't think you should be working with mentally disabled people at all, because to me at least, it seems like you yourself are mentally unstable. Sorry for the long rant: TLDR: There are mental hospitals bad enough that still exist that are basically prisons for children and adults with mental illnesses and disability that treat them like inmates who have done horrible crimes when most of them have never done anything wrong and where placed there for help. I volunteered to go in so I could get help for my own issues and saw it in full force. So I think I could survive this experiment, because I survived already in a place like that once.

I survived 7 years in the real thing so yeah, I think I could survive it. Not a very nice place to be. Having watched Shawshank Redemption quite a few times I had expected prison to be nothing but prisoners trying to rape each other, but it's not really like that. I never heard of any rape happening in my time there. I was in the Tennessee state system so maybe it's different in other states, but it didn't happen with enough frequency that I ever caught wind of it, and since one of the only things we have go do in there is gossip I think it woulda made the rounds if it happened. The thing is, most of us don't want to have sex with another man. That place is full of alpha male types, and well they tend to not want to do that. There were enough "punks" in there that if a dude wanted to screw another dude he didn't need to force anyone. What did happen quite a bit was violence. Again, you've got a bunch of dominant personality types in there so it's bound to happen. There's also not quite as much racial tension as films would have you think, although at one of the camps I was at, one of the two "bad" prisons in the state where prison is prison and you better be a convict, there was quite a lot of racial conflict. It was also home to one of the two riots I got to be in. Pretty fun until the rubber bullets and tear gas started flying. I think that the people running the experiment likely gave both the guards and the inmates ideas on what to do in order to "spice up" the thing a little. You do tend to conform to your environment no doubt, I know that place had it's impact on me, but not every guard ends up being a dehumanizing asshole. Of course there were plenty of those, but most of them just wanted to go home without any trouble. The "super troopers" usually wouldn't last long before one or more of the prisoners got at them.
