What a fantastic and in-depth review. I went through a similar process. At first, I really didn't like Portrayal. But after 2 years (and four decants!), I have finally realised its brilliance. It is like a new dimension to the smell just opened up! I had the same thing happen with Overture Man

I am definitely going to put a decant of this on my list! Great review, very good and honest. Reflected and well argumented. And yes, how can Amouage not see how the legacy of Christopher Chong is being destroyed? If not in class, quality, imagination, excitement and sheer mystique being lost to the brand, then surely in sales figures? They have gone from magic to grey, to cement. I mean, even the classic Amouage bottles should have been experimented further on, maybe even bringing back elements of their earliest style. What we see now is just bland. I have had the same thoughts myself, and thought how easy it would have been, to find a powerful direction as a continuation of mr. Chong´s legendary legacy. I could not agree more with your last comment on Amouage, and I sincerly hope that they bring back mr. Chong a.s.a.p. Or bring in somebody with an originial creative force on their own, an artist, a magician, a dreamer.

This was a grower on me for sure. Love it now. Everything C. Chong did was art. I’m so close to having all his male fragrances in my collection. Next step is his library collection and then finish off with the female-marketed ones, even the ones I’ll probably never wear. If for nothing else than to stick it to the fish guy 😅

It's curious how things can change and work out. A number of years ago, I bought a couple of Amouage fragrances but could not develop an appreciation for them and, in fact, returned them to the retailer. About four years ago, I ordered a fragrance and received a sample of "Portrayal" with my purchase. I was completely bewitched by the fragrance. One thing led to another and I now own 25 Amouage fragrances. My bottle of "Portrayal" was also made in the UK. As an aside, about 4 months ago, I managed to acquire a sealed bottle of "Bracken" (man) and I cannot understand why Amouage would discontinue such a remarkable fragrance. Amouage has apparently also discontinued "Sunshine" (man) and "Ciel" (man) as well. Fortunately, I have bottles of both. But Why?

I'm a vintage fragrance man of 62 years...and I got a sampler of Reflection Man 2 years ago and it was like putting a bowl of sugar on Fruitloops..hahaha...I couldn't wait to wash it off!! I like some of the millennial frags,..like Creed Silver Mountain Water,..(It's a dupe of YSL Jazz 1988),..but I guess I'm officially and old frag head,..proudly !!! yeah I have no idea what's going on, if it just doesn't come off on my skin or my bottles were reformatted. I have the newer packaging, and my bottle was made in 2022. I just get 0 cade oil at all, no birch tar or gasoline smell, so I have no idea what's going on. Maybe it needs time to mature but that makes no sense to me the bottle is a year and a half old...

@@RamseytheRamI sprayed some on right after watching this video, and it had an aromatic soapy feel to it, which is weird because previous times I’ve worn it I get that ozonic almost candied violet smell. Honestly no clue what’s going on maybe my hand was just super cold when I sprayed it on and the notes didn’t come out. I will try it again when I get back from work today. It’s just so strange because even a sample that I got of it smelled the same, no Fahrenheit similarities at all :/ disappointing

But I struggle to get Also get it in Overture? Which I wore yesterday lovely scent for sure. Have you heard of SuperZ a fragrance house from Turkey,gaining traction in the fragrance community? Niche,organic ,high quality ingredients top Perfumer /owner 50 years experience gives a great interview and house overview on KZbin. I ordered 2 they are listed extraits 20 % oil in accordance to EU laws 100 bucks per 50 ml offering, take a peak my friend could be a house to know . Great vid have a super weekend man 🙏✌️👍

Hi Ramsey. Last year, I got a bottle of "Portrayal Man" for a very good price. When I first tried it, I was pretty disappointed: I thought "I already have Mercedes-Benz For Men Intense" (which is an inexpensive alternative to Dior "Fahrenheit"). However, during the second time I wore "Portrayal Man", I concluded that I do like it. After my first few wearings of it, I think of it as a soapy, musky, gasoline-like leather fragrance. In addition to Dior "Fahrenheit", it also has a similarity to "Narciso Rodriguez For Men EDT". Ramsey, I agree with you that "Portrayal Man" might have patchouli in it.

You are describing everything I like about a fragrance- Fahrenheit is similar to Kiton Men, which is the best cologne ever and has sadly been discontinued- so it sounds very..:. in that direction

Never smelled Kiton for men.... it's on the to sniff list 🐽

@@RamseytheRam Kiton - to me- is exactly how you described aamouage portrayal man - it is LAYERED- Kiton has that violety and flannely and kinda vetiver scent, except it’s got pineapple and yuzu/bergamont (all colognes that i like have one ir the other or both)- Fehrenheit is veeery similar, but parfume’s got that gasoline overtone and than it dries down to vanilla- which I love, so Kiton doesn’t have that sweatness- but if Fehrenheit is being compared to Kiton, than surely Amouage Portrait Man’s got that in common… Kiton MEN has been discontinued, it used to be so cheap ($70 max), and now assholes are selling it in Ebay from $400-$500-$1500- there is Kiton Black, but to me it does not have that smoothness and is more leathery than Kiton Men. Luckly, Kiton fashion house has released Kiton RED and Ciro and Napoli and a few others- they are very very expensive (300-400 euros which translates to over 550 in CAnadian dollars + shipping, the house does ship/is based in usa, not Canada, but I have managed to find others who carry the new colognes and do ship to Canada) but at least it is straight from the fashion house, original, and apparently much more potent! I am getting ALL that have remotely something in common with Kiton Men- that is how much I love that scent! It was the first cologne i smelt on someone, approached them like a lunatic and str8 up asked them about what they were wearing 😀 Hugh Parsons 99 Regent street it similar, except it’s got shaved pencil/smoky undertones- more serious, less playful than Kiton Men - but very similar, Bond n9 Bleeker St. as well

I've been trying more chong amouages under your suggestion a couple months back, and this one surprised me a ton! So much so that i might have jumped the gun on a steal for one on a discounter 😂 Where reflection man kind of has that too adolescent bubblegummy sweetness and a bit of babypowder cleanliness (at least on my skin/my associations), portrayal has more of a mature and green earthiness while maintaining aspects of that soapy floral cleanliness...nowhere all that similar besides the cleanliness but i can see the use case for both being similar, if that makes sense. The next Pierre Negrin's on my chopping block for extended wearing are journey, then sunshine... Then the opuses.

@@RamseytheRam I can understand the claims of a boozy nature in Portrayal Man. In the beginning, everything hits your nose like the vapor of a neatly poured spirit. It's so well blended that it's hard to know where to start.

portrayal was the last of the 12 or so bottles i have of amouage, and ended up being easily top 3 most perfect for me personally if not the best match for me. its in a slugging match with epic, beach hut, overture and bracken. the more i wear it, the more i love it and the more i think it barely smells like Fahrenheit at all, though it could be considered the offspring of grey flannel easily (i also love Fahrenheit though seperately). this is such an awesome fragrance... def dont get the 1920s thing lol but w.e. they can write whatever blurb they want, its near perfect.
