I am sorry to hear this information. Please note that the battery BMS board of the Ampere Time 12V200Ah heating model is 100A and can withstand a load of 1280W. If the load exceeds, the protection function is triggered. It can be checked if it is because of this factor. In addition, Li for LiTime means Lithium, pronounced lee.

Inverters often have a fairly large capacitor bank on the input stage. When you turn the inverter on the first thing that happens is the capacitor bank charges. That happens very quickly and can generate a very large, but short duration amp draw on your battery. If that amp draw is big enough it can trip the over current protection in the batteries BMS. That over current trip can be reset by letting the battery sit without load for some time (often around 30 seconds) or by applying a voltage above some threshold, typically above 14V, which your charger does. From what I can tell, that particular Ampere Time battery has a 100 amp BMS and it appears that your 1500 watt inverter simple draws enough current for a few milliseconds at start up to trip the BMS over current protection. That the same thing doesn't happen with the Chins battery says that it has a different over current protection limit/time combination. It appears to me that the battery is working as designed. If you want to learn more about your battery, may I suggest this video from Lithium Solar - kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6uqf2yaZbiVb6c . Watch to the end where he talks about having exactly the same issue you are having. What it comes down to is that you are trying to run too large an inverter with that battery. Your 1,000 watt inverter obviously has a smaller capacitor bank and doesn't draw a big enough surge on startup to shut down the battery. Also, with a 100 amp BMS that battery can only support a 1,000 watt inverter. A 1500 watt inverter, assuming 1,500 watts is its output capacity, can draw as much at 1,650-1,700 watts from the battery, which is around 130 amps, which a battery with a 100 amp BMS can not support. If you want to reliably run a 1,500 watt inverter, you really need a battery with a 200 amp BMS or two batteries with 100 amp BMS in parallel. Also, if you watch some of Will Prouse' KZbin older videos (www.youtube.com/@WillProwse), you will notice that he uses a power resistor to charge the inverter's capacitor bank before making the connection to the inverter. He does that to limit the surge current draw on the battery to prevent having the over protection trip.

Good guess, but it has done the same intermittently on DC loads that aren't even inverters. Just seems to be very repeatable with this inverter, so able to demo the issue with it. The loads I tested in the video were no load, just the inverter turning on via its power switch with nothing plugged in, so just idle current after startup and powering a 50 watt fan and 600 watt heater. All failed to be powered. The battery would shut down. As far as this inverter being a problem. The company looked closely at the video and feels it's likely faulty BMS. They did not blame the inverter for being too big. I used a 3000W inverter to do a load test in my review, and it worked fine to test for the rated 100 amp discharge capability. Something since then has gone awry. Makes me think they have a known issue. Also, the battery BMS has a Max. Discharge Current 5 Seconds: 280A rating. Highly unlikely the inverter would draw more than 280 amps by simply turning it, or it would be blowing people's inverter fuses all the time. They are sending out a new battery to test. btw Out of interest I tested the inrush current with my clamp-on amp meter. The average was about 60 amps. The max tested was 86 amps. I'll update when I get the new battery and try it. Judging by the feedback I'm getting, this battery BMS has had the same issue for several people requiring replacement to be sent out.

We have the same battery and had the same issue. Kept tripping the BMS everytime we turned our Xantrex 2000 watt inverter on after alot of trial and error, we added an extra 2 oo cable from the battery to the inverter. piggy backed on to the existing cable, essentially doubling the wire size. that was 3 months ago and we have not had any issue since.

I wonder if the inverter was the shutting down from low voltage vs the battery BMS. That would make sense to me as to why increasing the wire gauge would solve the problem by reducing the voltage drop between the battery and inverter.

I had a similar issue. The problem is when a large enough load is put on the battery at startup the voltage will drop below 11,5 volts so the inverter will shut itself off. If the inverter you are using has an adjustment for low voltage shut off and can be set to 10.5 volts you will not have any issues.

I have two of them in parallel and charged by four 200 watt solar panels on an RV. Worked fine for the last three years for the couple months per year we needed them. But 10 days ago, they crapped out under Normal load of a small RV heater. Now we are trying to figure out why. I’m currently in contact with Amperetime and see what we can do. But really not very happy after spending $1500 for both of them. Let’s see what their tech says and what the warranty is. Tks for the video. Seems to confirm my issues.

I am on my second pair of these batteries. My first set had nearly the exact same problem. At random times while under load, they would momentarily drop voltage causing all of my RV equipment to reset. The voltage drop would only last 1-2 seconds but it was a real problem for my RV equipment. Another randomly occurring problem I encountered with the first set was when I'd turn off my generator the batteries would not provide any 12v power. The only way I found to correct it was to restart my generator for a few seconds. I assume doing so caused the BMS to reset and only then would they provide any power at all. It took several emails through their customer service department to finally get them replaced. Ultimately, I submitted a video like this one showing the voltage drop before they finally agreed to replace them. Luckily, my replacement batteries have functioned properly since installing them in Feb 2023.

@lakecavanaugh
@lakecavanaugh Жыл бұрын
Have you considered the inrush current from that inverter is higher than the BMS will tolerate and still protect the batteries from damage? The Chins battery tolerates it because it is a less capable BMS and that may seem like a good thing, but it will lead to premature battery failure of weaker cells. The AmpereTime works sometimes because of how fast you were connecting and disconnecting the inverter. A better inverter will precharge the internal capacitors to help decrease the inrush surge. I bet the inrush on that inverter is close to 300 amps.

@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV Жыл бұрын
Thanks, but I've confirmed it's not the cabling. Tried different gauges. In one case, use 2/0 one foot long. It's not a high current problem leading to a significant voltage drop. It also cuts out with very low wattage loads. Just turning on the inverter with no load attached was cutting the battery off. Or running a 50-watt fan. Cheers, Ray

If you used a big capacity to pre charge the capacitor in the inverter before attaching it. Maybe then it works? the BMS probably doesn't like the spike of power demand that the capacitor in the inverter creates.

It plainly says on the product description that it's a 100amp bms. That's enough for the 1kw inverter but not the 1.5kw. The charger looks no more than 20amp, but I don't know. That is not enough to make up the shortfall. So the battery is not at fault. The bms is protecting the battery internals.

Ampere Time techs watched the video and agreed that the BMS was faulty so they sent out a replacement. Here is my update video testing with the replacement kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJfQZ3-MlrGnhZI By the way, I tested the same 1500W inverter with other brand batteries that only have 100A continuous rated BMS, and the inverter started fine with them. Chins 100A BMS battery and AOtlithium 100A BMS battery start the 1500W inverter just fine. This is because most 100A BMS have a surge rating of 200A or more for a short period, sometimes even a few minutes. Not sure why the issue with this Ampere Time, but it seems to have something to do with the self-heating BMS as it reacted the same with 2 other self-heating BMS batteries I tested. I think they are all using the same brand BMS boards. Maybe they need to adjust the overcurrent shutdown protection to allow for the brief inrush current spike. They may have it set too strict. I don't expect the inverter to run a 1500W full output with a 100A BMS, but I expect it to start and run up to a 1200W load. Cheers, Ray

In my tests the inverter issue happened with only batteries that had self heating pads. Happened with 3 different brands. Kind of a weird problem. I think the troublesome inverter has high ripple current from the battery. The high spikes of current are what is most likely tripping the BMS because the BMS current monitor doesn't have an effective low pass filter. That's not to say the inverter isn't at fault as it should have filters on it's input as well to stop these noisy current spikes.

Willing to bet its inrush - ie inverter requires a lot of amps when it starts up. Easy to test - you can probably add a capacitor on either side - if that's the case, it's the BMS blocking overcurrent. It's weird it happens so quickly, but some BMS are just more trigger happy with overcurrent. Maybe you can measure to current between the battery and the BMS to confirm or use a power resistor to reduce inrush.

If inverter works fine with the capacitor, you know it's some form of inrush. As for why - it might be that the capacitors inside the "problematic" inverter are smaller than the other inverter or that the capacitors in the "problematic" inverters are getting older and therefore less effective at limiting inrush.

It has done the same on intermediately on small amperage DC loads that aren't even in inverters. Just seems to be very repeatable with this inverter so able to demo the issue.

Yes, when the BMS does stay switched on the voltage output is normal under load. For some reason the BMS is falsely intermittently going into a protect mode is my guess.

My 300ah Ampere Time (non-heating) battery recently began to shut down when the sun went down (solar system). I would hit it briefly with a generator, then the battery would come back to life. (Go from 0 volts up to its 13.4volts). I bought a 100ah Battleborn to replace... my question: can I throw my AmpereTime into parallel with the new Battleborn? I hate to think I need to throw the AmpereTime away!

See my second update video kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnrMdqxreNJ9f9E&lc=UgznWPKMEUcM142U_-R4AaABAg Faulty BMS even shuts off when a charge is taken away with very small amp load. It should not do that. I proved that with the 8 amp air compressor load and no inverter hooked up. So BMS is faulty. Ampere Time support concurs. I've tried several other battery brands with 100A rated BMS the same test setup and they work fine. Ampere Time has sent me a new battery to try. @@LoveYourRV thank you so much for letting me know!! I was hoping to order batteries this week, am deciding between SOK, Renogy, li-Time/AmpereTime, and Java. I also saw your last video saying the 200ah heated batteries low temp shut off didn’t work.. I always wonder if getting the entire battery cold, instead of putting the temp readers in cold water, would test differently, if the BMS has some temp reading function built in or something.. just a curiosity thought! I will be eagerly awaiting for your video, thank you very much!

I may be reviewing a similarly built one called a Lvgoo www.lvgoobattery.com/product-page/lifepo4-12v-battery-lv12v130 It interests me due to the way its built to be easily taken apart and parts replaced if needed. @@LoveYourRV thank you so much for your replies and videos!!! I was originally going to go SOK but they’re about $5.15 per Ah, compared to the Chinese companies like Varter being $3.2 per ah or Amperetime at 3.6$ per ah… can’t decide if I should risk it for the savings or not 😅 600ah of Varter would be $1,919 while 600ah of SOK would be $3,087… definitely a worthy amount of savings, just scared the Varter low temp doesn’t actually work

@@kevinmills5293 One of the drawbacks to the Battleborn design is they use tons of smaller cylindrical lithium cells versus the larger prismatic cells used in most. www.comoxmarine.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Whats-Inside-a-Battle-Born-Battery-BMS.webp This makes for many many more connection points to possibly fail or maybe never connected right in the manufacturing process. Hopefully an autopsy will be done and see what may have gone wrong.

@@LoveYourRV Sorry but I made a mistake. The rated discharge for this battery is 100 Amps or 1280 watts. Your second inverter might be checking for more current to get to 1500 watts which is just over 117 amps at 12.8 volts. So parallel batteries is the solution for the problem.

I tested some other lithium batteries that are rated 100 amps 1280 watts and they work fine with the inverter. Think it must be something to do with the programming of the BMS board.
