@@Shel230now I love Gary I really do. But Ed brought more tasteful licks to the band. But I’d take Allen Collins over Gary any day of the week. The Beauty of Lynyrd Skynyrd is there ain’t a bad guitarist in the bunch. Allen had to show Gary how to bring a song to a climax for years on the leads. Gary was great but Allen was the glue.

@@henry-r1f I agree with that statement, I worked with Ed at a camp ground in New Jersey that his wife's parents owned when he first left Skynyrd in 75. He didn't mention names but said that he was there to play music and the band had lost focus of that and alot of negative things began to happen and he decided he had to leave. I'll always remember him making the comment that he doubted that the band would last another 5 years if it continued on the track they were on. They would be dead 2 years later from the crash.

I think that alcohol and drugs caused all of Ronnie’s blow ups but they were being fed them by their management and from the venues on top of their own stashes and the mix of drugs and alcohol on top of the torture tour he finally flipped. Ed was an amazing addition to the band and he was also a great writer and him leaving the band was a huge hit in my opinion but they did finally get Steve Gaines and he was also a great fit and not only did he write he also sang so he was a great replacement for Ed but Ed helped write some of their most popular songs and that’s always going to be a part of his legacy. RIP Ed

I think Ronnie was a good band leader and writer. And by most accounts sober, he was a good guy. But his tendacies towards bullying had been with him all of his life. Combining that with alcohol is a bad mix. He either would have ended up in jail or an early grave from other means. Because bullies always eventually run into that one guy that they should have left alone.

@smitlag
@smitlag Жыл бұрын
@pristineclear8604 a lot of fighting is pure attitude. The rest of the guys were not huge bulking guys, and they had been together since high school. I heard a story from Danny Joe Brown of Molly Hatchet. When asked if he knew Ronnie, he replied he did. "The first time we met, we nearly got into a fight." I'm a bit more curious as to how that would have turned out. Personally, just my taste, I think Molly Hatchet would have blown Skynard off the stage. But I have also heard that Jacksonville was a pretty rough area to grow up.

One thing about Ed King is he had enough personal integrity and self respect he decided to bail on the Skynyrd tour ,rather than continue to take Ronnie's abuse. Sometimes a Man needs to move on to more favorable work conditions. RIP Ed King. While Skynyrd toured in Europe and drinking in their hotel a drunken Ronnie Vanzant knocked out the front tooth of the talented piano player , Billy Powell. RIP Billy Powell. I really like all Vanzant brothers, please don't misconstrue my feelings about Ronnie. Unfortunately Ronnie was the source of a lot the unnecessary tension due to his heavy drinking . Towards the end of Ronnie's life it should be noted he got his own alcohol abuse under control and left this world with his Boots on. RIP Ronnie Vanzant. @@pristineclear8604 I'm not sure if Billy fought him back.. If you search for one of the original documentaries they were talking about the day's the whole band were abusing drugs and alcohol. I recall Billy Powell got one of his big front teeth knocked out and he required dental work to repair the dental problem. Gary Rossington said Ronnie Vanzant loved to go to Piss City. When the band were around Muscle Shoals Alabama recording music, they used Truck Stops to shower as they had no money. The band members with their long hair would get made fun of by red neck truck drivers and the whole band would crack lose on the assholes. Gary said Ronnie was the best fighter and would put a serious ass whooping on them.. @@EddieDumont-ny1gt am I supposed to be impressed you say you knew Ed? I said I loved Ed but no one is perfect, including Ed. Multiple sources say he took off in middle of the night, in a way I don't blame him because he didn't want too go another round w/Ronnie but he could have told rest of the band out of respect but he didn't & it was wrong IMO. It isn't just that, he also took snacks on the road & when guys got the munchies, he would sell them slim Jim's & other snacks & then couldn't figure out why he didn't fit in. The other guys were just the opposite, sharing their frustration & whatever they had. I also didn't like how he sued Gary over royalties on SHA. IDK the particulars abt the money, if they owed him money, I get that but he claimed he & Ronnie wrote SHA, & apparently court believed him. He had a rug made for his place in Nashville that looked like a record of SHA & it said written by RVZ & Ed King. He placed it in the foyer so everyone could see it but then on a later video he told the story abt how SHA & said it was Gary playin the riff over & over again & Ed wrote the song from there. His words were have to give credit where credit is due, if it wasn't for Gary there would be no SHA. That's why Gary I'd named on the album. I doubt the story that after they both fame up w/beginning that Gary just walked away, my guess is they kept up that creative process & finished the song together. I am sure you will not admit to anything other than Ed was perfect & if you really knew each other then Ed is perfect to you. I think it is a Lil sad that you make it sound like Ed was an angel & rest were assholes. And don't even get me started on Artimus.

@kathyrais574 Hey Kathy, I was so busy celebrating the return of President Trump that I wasn't on the phone much. As for your response , as for the date regarding Skynyrd blowing the Stones away while on the same bill, that did happen and as for my knowing Ed King, I did know and work with him back in 75 when he first left Skynyrd in the middle of a tour and he left for what he felt were good reasons. As for his part in his part in the making of SHA , he said one thing other people said other things who are any of us to say who was right. I wasn't trying to impress anyone by saying that I knew him, hell, I've been a jazz & R&B drummer for 50+ years and know alot of people in the business and played professionally throughout the 80's & early 90"s in the casino's as a house musician for different casino's in Atlantic City, NJ. Anyone in the business knows that we all sight read and play behind the singing groups that are billed there to perform, I don't have to know anyone from a band to be some one, I do the same things that the bands do except I don't have to travel around the world spending long periods on the road being away from loved ones playing the same songs over and over until you begin to become bored with them and hate playing them which most members won't admit to fans. Tours suck and are only done to promote a bands new music and make money, plain and simple anyone who says otherwise is a liar with the exception of Skynyrd, when they reformed in 87 and saw how well they were accepted and decided to keep it going which was Gary Rossington' s decision it was done to keep the dream that Ronnie had alive, remember that they weren't known that well when the plane went down. The whole thing was sad and I am not going to put anyone on a pedestal nor am I going to demonize anyone. Skynyrd was a badass band who put out a lot of great music in the short time they were around and were cut short way too soon because of the plane crash on 10/20/77 and we'll never know how far they would have gone. I'm a jazz & R&B fan and drummer but I do like all kinds of music if it's good and has soul. Skynyrd had that in spades and as fans we should enjoy the great music they left us to enjoy instead of arguing about things that took place 40+ years ago between people who are gone. Have a Blessed day. .

I remember just prior to their last tour , Ronnie was interviewed in People magazine. Where he had set the booze aside and was focused on the music and had been working out for the tour. Seemed to have rebounded back to his music. Few weeks afterward is when the plane went down. Wish I still had that copy of People. 😢

Good thing that Ed was invited back after Ronnie’s death because that proves other members were on his side. From other reports Ronnie could be a bully and pitted other band members against each other for his amusement. I think it was the Alcohol for sure.

Ed King "Well, the night before I quit. We had actually played 2x nights before in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Ronnie got thrown in jail along with this guy I knew named John Butler, who took care of my guitars. And it was his job to change my strings everyday. Anyway, they didn't show up in Pittsburgh, the next show, until like five minutes before the show started. They showed up, they had just gotten out of jail...and during the show that night, I broke 2x strings during "Freebird" in which I never did before. (I always played a 'Gibson SG' guitar during that song...I still own that guitar.) Anyways, during the limo ride back to the hotel, Ronnie started giving me hell, and wanted to fight...so the limo driver pulled over, got out and said you guys have to get another ride! I got back to the hotel and decided that I didn't need or want this lifestyle anymore, so I then parted ways during the night and flew home."

It’s Ed King. He joined the band after leaving Strawberry Alarm Clock. Alcohol takes its toll on relationships when the alcoholic becomes violent! Simple case of too much booze ruining a good thing! They were fortunate to have Cassie Gaines recommend her brother Steve as a replacement for Ed! The decision to leave the band probably saved Ed King’s life, as he wasn’t in the plane crash that would later kill Ronnie, Steve and Cassie and seriously wound most of the others!😉😒
