I am inclined to comment - very awesome vid, I can't belelive how well your closeups are, super fast focus and amazing explanation! Indeed I remember the thorps, and I have a few on me, one for the tamiya beetle, kyosho scorpion and I think one for the ultima, keeping them all, I got them for a bargain with a bunch of other stuff, they are the 'holy grail' of vintage hop ups, the new ones - MIPs have the same soul as the vintage ones and I am grateful to tamiya to making these re-releases for all to enjoy
@AMPROEngineering5 жыл бұрын
Oh I know. I remember when those thorps were out....but my 10 year old self could never afford such a thing! Who knew that me going to MIP every few months to bother them about that diff for 7 years would finally have worked....

Just got myself a kyosho field baja beetle body, 1998 release I think since it is a single speed and has a GX11 engine on it, just love kyosho engineering on the roller, but not so much the lexan bodies, I prefer tamiya hard bodies, nothing compares but for bashing, lexan is the inexpensive option

This is great! Thank you for putting together this video! I have what I think would be an original Blackfoot I received as a teenager around 89. It hasn’t run in years but I took it to our local Hobby Town a few years ago asking what I could do to get it running for my kids. The store owner was the same guy we would have purchased it from years ago but he said there wasn’t anything we could do with it. If I recall correctly I needed a new set of dog bones almost every time I ran it because they would round out. I think it may have issues with it electronically as well but at least this is a start!
@AMPROEngineering11 ай бұрын
Yeah those dogbones are a pain! MIP makes a replacement diff to be used with the new tamiya CVD's. It is episode 44. As for electronics, some a simple turbo racing radio with a cheap brushed ESC and you are good!

Great video mate, always love listening to your wisdom and knowledge. I'm one of the 80% overseas sales. I bought two MIP Super Ball Diffs, one each for my Blackfoot and Monster Beetle re-releases. I've also just acquired an original Blackfoot, and just tonight won an original Subaru Brat body. Those two items will become my "Ulitmate wanted ORV", the Mud Blaster. When money allows i will be upgrading to the MIP diff, and drive-train in the original Blackfoot come Mud Blaster. Also very keen on 3 sets of your Tamiya Blackfoot ORV Series Zero Toe-In Steering Knuckles. Again, once some money frees-up I will get some. Thanks for your videos

Nice video! I acquired a Monster Beetle re-release around 2016 and it was sitting in storage until my kid grew up. Now we built it together and on first battery run it sounded like the gearbox is full of rocks, it ran but it sounded really bad. I've been reading on "clicking" around the web but ours sounds more like popping (or rocks). I installed the Traxxas shims yesterday and it seems to be running okay-ish, but when turning the wheels on hand I guess the issue is still there. I am hoping the ball diff will fix this issue, it costed arm and leg to order from USA to my country. But my kid absolutely loves the build so I must get it up and running. :)
@AMPROEngineering2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the ball diff is the permanent solution to this horribly annoying problem. I know so many people that try all kinds of things to get the gears to work better but there is only one solution to this. Even with the gear pressed in place, the trash pot metal is terrible and they will always wear out eventually...always at the worst time. I worked for years with MIP to get this to market and it is just outstanding. Please note all the other parts you need as mentioned in the video. There are part numbers in the description for the axles and dogbones.

I started getting my MIP diff assembled for my re-release Brat and I believe there are more parts needed for those with any era Frog, Brat, or Lancia Rally. As you noted, a new counter gear is needed "Part Number 58060 - X9954" but that does not include the counter gear bearings needed to complete the diff. in the Monster Beetle re-relase manual it calls for 2 x BB8 which is a Tamiya 850 metal bearing (note that stock this is NOT a ball bearing) to be used in the counter gear. With the Brat counter gear you use 2 x MD2 which is a Tamiya 1150 ball bearing. The counter gear bearings from the Brat/Frog/Lancia Rally do not carry over to the Monster Beetle/Blackfoot counter gear, they are too big. So if I have it right, those of us with vintage Brat/Frog/Lancia Rally or re-release Brat/Frog would also need 2 x 850 metal bearings or 2 x 850 ball bearings to be used in conjunction with the new counter gear. The counter gear shaft and the white plastic shaft ends/caps seem to be the same and would be used in the reassembly of the diff. Not sure if this is noted anywhere else or if anyone else has run into it yet.
@AMPROEngineering8 жыл бұрын
The bearings are different? Really? Wow I had not noticed that. Thank you for the info. I need to take a look at my cars. I have installed this on the Brat but not the frog. I think the brat may already have had the BF gear set. This is why I didn't notice it but I do have a Frog that is completely stock.

@AMPROEngineering3 жыл бұрын
So yes and no. Yes it will work but you need to change the main gear to the the blackfoot style. Then you need to make sure your frog has the CV axles as this was never tested with the dogbones and obviously wont work on the hex drives.

Finally ordered the MIP ball diff set! I found an old school Blackfoot in fairly good shape a while back, stripped it completely down and restored it with the addition of modern electronics and new bearings. I made the mistake of also adding a 540 Torque Tuned Motor and after 4 runs, the original diff turned to grey jelly. I oddly feel bad about destroying it because it was original to the truck but also surprised it lasted that long. 😂 After installing the MIP diff, what would you say is the best upgraded Tamiya motor that one could install without over doing it? I want the Blackfoot to be quicker but I also don’t expect it to do 30 mph down the road. Your advice would be much appreciated. Great tutorial as always!
@AMPROEngineering2 жыл бұрын
It is an outstanding upgrade. I am a bad person to ask that question, lol, everything I have is slow. If you want more speed, a brushed 18T mod is good. I have seen insane brushless setups but remember, this is an ancient design and is not capable of modern motors. I hope that helps.

The ball diff is indestructible but the rest of the gears are not, as you mention. I think a 13x2 is too hot for me but I am running a 17x3 Orion and it feels great. Just be careful with jumping and landing with the tires spinning under load. The ball diff has no slip.

It sounds like something is binding. This differential is designed specifically for the black foot and not the frog or the other small wheeled variants. If you install this in one of those, the gears will not mesh correctly as I brought up in the video. If that is not the case, something else is preventing the gear train from turning. Double check your assembly

@@AMPROEngineering I don't have calipers, but found a little hard white ball that seemed to be the same size. Fingers crossed it works.

i used to have a blackfoot back in the 80's. i upgraded it with a trinity motor and what i believe was a ball slipper or ball diff i cant remember, i just remember the guy at the hobby shop said i should get that with the trinity mod motor.
@AMPROEngineering7 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you got a Thorp ball diff. I used to have a few of those but canned them when I got the MIP unit. This thing is a masterpiece!
@KidAgainHobbies7 жыл бұрын
it may have been. i think the reason i thought it was a ball slipper is because the gold pan rc10 i had back in the 80s had a ball slipper i believe. i remember a friend at church had the original rc10 gold pan and wanted to trade me for my modded blackfoot so i did, i couldnt pass that up. i had always wanted an rc10 back then especially after seeing jay halsey in magazines with one...lol.

Have you tried the diff in the Wild One? I have a Thorp diff in my Wild one from my old Blackfoot.
@AMPROEngineering8 жыл бұрын
Do you mean tried installing this in the WO or am I familiar with the one on the WO? Yes to both! LOL! We tried to see if we could get this to fit multiple Tamiya's but the face was that none of them needed the diff like the ORV's and there would have been too many compromises to make them fit other cars. If this is a sales success then this will not be the end of upgrades for Tamiyas from MIP.

So I installed this on my 2015 Monster Beetle and I am pretty sure I installed everything right however I noticed that when I run the Beetle at full throttle from a stand still there is considerable slippage it seems. The motor will wind up but the Beetle won’t take off... rather it slowly starts going then gets up to speed. Might this have something to do with the tightening of that in internal spring in the ball diff? It almost seems like when a grub screw on a pinion gear is slightly loose (however I did check that by the way and it is tight). Sorry, gearing isn’t my specialty. Any ideas?
@AMPROEngineering6 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm, yeah there should be no slippage at all. Are the diff balls and the thrust balls installed in the right spots? I would snug up that diff screw and see how that goes before you tear it down. Let me know.
@ericlakeoriginal6 жыл бұрын
So, I finally found the time to play around with this. I did what you said and tightened the diff screw all the way down and then backed off a little over 1/8th turn this time. Worked! I guess that screw is very sensitive to the performance if only a slight turn made that much difference. Thanks for your help! And thank you for what you do! I have so many mods of yours on my Monster Beetle that it looks like something else now. You should set up a page online somewhere so we can upload pics of our Ampro modded rides!

Why do they still use these shat gearboxes?
@AMPROEngineering4 жыл бұрын
The gearbox was good until they put it in the black foot where the differential was just not capable of the loads exerted by the rotating mass of the wheels. Once you replace that with the MIP diff, the gearbox is solid.

Honestly a solid diff like the Brat and Lancia had would have solved it. The Frog was the one that came out with the working diff. I am just glad MIP now has the final solution with their Ball Diff.

I just installed my MIP Diff and cant figure out why the upper gear moves side to side? Is that normal?it has a lot of play. Thanks
@AMPROEngineering8 жыл бұрын
The stock counter gear? Does the trans close up completely? Is this on a re-re? There should be some play in the stock set up but how much are you seeing? It should fit the same way that it did before you opened it to replace the diff. Let me know.
@matthewbuchanan30638 жыл бұрын
AMPRO Engineering it is the new Transmission I just don't remember it having about a 1/4 inch of play. I am going to take it apart again. Also where did you get the bigger roll pins for the rear arms on the shapeways IRS. Thanks
@AMPROEngineering8 жыл бұрын
A quarter inch! No that isnt correct. As for the roll pins, I actually used tamiya screw pins. I think they are usually found in kit parts bags. I typed "tamiya screw pin" on ebay and buy the longest ones i can find since I can chop them shorter if need be. Wish I had a part number but thanks to Tamiya I dont. Keep me posted with the trans. I installed 6 so far and they are perfect.

I got an MIP tranny on an on-road stock conversion RC-10 and performance-wise it gets 5 stars, however not sure we buying MIP aftermarket parts are gonna keep them afloat. We are lucky to have all these reissues from Tamiya, but people like Associated only did their old 1984 buggy 1 time and they sold out too quickly. Lots of people lost out on that classic and It's a damn shame. If you want that reissued RC-10, you gotta pay 1000k for it on Ebay.
