I know this video is ancient, but I have never heard anyone make this amp, or any amp for that matter, sound so bad. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of lowered mids for metal, but this is insane. When you scoop them this much, the natural sharp mid-range that an SM57 causes, along with it's boosts to low end and bass frequencies in an untreated room, causes the guitar to sound like it is run out of a 1 watt first act amp. Listen to 1:01 and 1:30 to see what I mean. I understand the tone is subjective, but nobody, and I mean nobody, likes those tones. They may have sounded good coming from the amp, but any experienced musician would know that its not about how the amp itself sounds, it is about how it sounds after it has been through a mic, preamp, interface, etc. However I did really like the EQ on the cleans, but pickup choice was not optimal for those either.

Mids? You don't need those. They're only essential if you actually want to sound good.

I have this head and love it. The volume on the lead channel is set still fairly low which is why it sounds lame. Tube heads are meant to be cranked the fuck up.

Cool amp and tone dude. I got the same amp but is the new Peavey valveking version ii 100 w h. Same old features plus more improvement.
@SvrgitAbsvrdvm10 жыл бұрын
The idea of the video is great and we have to appreciate the time spent in doing it. But yes, the tone is not that good, seems like it was on a very low volume, not letting the tubes to heat. And maybe a bad positioning of the microphone. We have to accept that maybe he's no professional and he's trying his best.

2:35 -- That's my guitar! I love that fucking thing, although after 10 years the frets are dented to shit, the pickup switch is loose as hell, and so is the output jack. Funny thing is, that guitar isn't even made by Fender -- it's made by Cort. Love the neck profile and the radius...so flat, very comfortable to play.

I know this is ancient..but someone may have one of these and not know this. The internal circuitry is kinda wonky in the effects loop. So take a patch cable and jump the send/return jacks in the effects loop. Changes the amp dynamics entirely. These are cheap and looked down on for some reason. But set up right these are a great choice for a budget all tube 100w screamer. The cabinets aren't half bad either. Listen to your ears..

I just ordered one of these. If i jump the loop, can i still use the loop for delay and modulation?

Why does your ValveKing sound so bad? I've got one that I use for practices so that I don't have to drag my Triple XXX around so much and my VK sounds a lot better. I don't know if it's your mic that you're recording with or what but if it's the amp you may need to have it checked man. You seem to have no highs and the bottom seems really muddy.

I do not play metal but I see one of these at a local pawn shop and want to know what it would sound like if I was too use it (they have no cabs to try it out on).Or is there anyway to cut down the metalhead douchebag tone?

That had to be your cabinet dude....I just played one in guitar center the other day and was super surprised at how amazing it sounded. To me it's almost like a 6505+ without all the fizz.... Like seriously I'm not trying to buy anything I just saw it and figured why not and i was like holy shit this is amazing. Such clean gain to me, it's not muddy like a Mesa or fizzy like a 6505+. Like with a 6505/5150/6534 nobody ever cranks those they generally use a tubescreamer because when you turn the gain way up it just gets nasty and fizzy and on the VK100 it had enough gain for me that I could get it to saturate enough but still sound clear without using any kind of pedal. I think the guitar I used had EMG 81 and 60 in it or something through a somewhat cheap marshall cab

+Michael Tuft Do not buy a Randall -- I'm pretty sure they're out of business now. The company that Randall was sold to awhile ago, US Music Corporation, which also owns Parker and Washburn guitars, closed a bunch of the US shops and are downsizing -- I think Randall was one of the shops they closed...I know the Parker and Washburn shop is gone -- it was in Chicago, one of the best custom shops in the world :( So sad. But anyway, if anything ever goes wrong with it and you need support -- it might not be easy. I had the Valve King 100 amp, awhile ago. I ended up selling it...I just use software amps now. It was an amazing amp for the price though; it sounded fucking sweet. It can do pretty much anything...metal, rock, blues, it even did cleans and crunch very very well. Peavey has sent a lot of their amp construction overseas but they are still a great company and they have amazing support, and make very good products. If I had the room, without a doubt, I would get a Peavey 6505...that, IMHO, is one of the best amps out there -- The only other amp I would even consider getting is a Mesa Mark V...but I really don't have room for any amps anymore...I'm saving up for a Kemper currently, so I can have all the amps I want in one small little box :) But the reason why I got the Peavey ValveKing 100 originally was, I needed something to gig live with, and the price was out of this world compared to everything else. So I bought it from a local Guitar Center...I wish I still had it :(
@5urg3x9 жыл бұрын
+Michael Tuft I think they closed in August (it was recent) -- www.rig-talk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=170471 - looks like Randall might be closing soon, not sure -- the one guy says the entire US Music Corp company is going under soon. They would probably still do imports though. Software amps are, you have a USB audio interface on your laptop, you plug your guitar into that, and then you run amp modeling software on your computer, like Peavey's Revalver 4, Guitar Rig, or Amplitube -- I've tried all of those, all of them are very good for metal, but if you want to use this for live playing you have to have a laptop and you have to bring it to every show. Have you checked out the Peavey 6505 mini? I don't think it costs that much -- and it sounds fucking AMAZING. It's just as good as the full sized 6505, and you get reverb, effects loop, and USB recording capabilities out of it. You really don't need a 100 watt head just to be able to play live and cut through the mix over a drummer; the 6505 mini will do that just fine -- you can go with any 2x12 cab to plug it into, and you're set.
@5urg3x9 жыл бұрын
+Michael Tuft Yes there is no need for a 4x12. Yes, the 6505 mini can do 20 5 and 1 watt I think. Just get a 2x12 cab and your set -- or if you have the time, save up and get a Fractal AxeFX or a Kemper Profiling Amp, they are expensive but its like 10000 amps in one.
