What happens when an amputee can't wear a prosthetic leg? What happens now? Why do some amputees not wear prosthetics?
As a below the knee amputee, when I can't wear my prosthetic leg, life is forced to slow down. I am forced to use my wheelchair, iwalk, knee scooter, scoot stairs and hop!
As a mom amputee, I have to make sure I take care of any potential issues so I do not have to stay down longer than necessary.

I just want to discuss cellulitis, for the benefit of yourself and other readers. It is a skin infection caused by staff or strep that was present on your skin. It can get very bad very quickly or it can take a few days. My husband once had a quarter size red spot on his arm in the morning. I came home at lunch, and his entire arm was red, he was running a fever, and he was only semi-conscious. It had gone systemic (like in his blood body wide), and he was in septic shock (life threatening). That was a 911 call. Another time when he had cellulitis, he had flu symptoms and the doctor diagnosed it as flu. A few days later he had small red spots on his leg. Within 24 hours he could not walk and went to the ER. The spots turned into blisters and they eventually all merged together into one giant blister on his entire leg. It took weeks of IV antibiotics to get over it. I said all that to say, don’t mess around with skin infections, especially if fever is also a symptom. Kerri, I think you are taking the right approach, but keep a close eye on it. If it gets worse, or you get a fever, don’t wait to get medical attention. Hope you get over it quickly!

Check with your prosthetic supplier. Your leg may need some adjusting. But yes get it checked out, or it could take you out longer than you thought. I had a blister on the end of my stump it put me out for three weeks. It happened because my leg dis fit right. Stay safe and hop on

3 weeks?!! 😨 this is a great tip! Thank you! I actually did go see a prosthetist right before I decided to go into the chair this week. We did a number of tests and it is definitely due to the socket. But the “bead” probably isn’t. So as soon as I address that, I’ll need a new socket

I have a love hate relationship with the iwalk. It allows you to get around more easily, but creates an awkward walking gait. Plus it is heavy. The scooter is fast, but oh how many times has it caught on some small item on the floor and nearly tossed me over the handlebars. I’m very good with crutches (lots of practice) and am safest on uneven terrain with them. I highly recommend getting a custom wheelchair. They are much lighter and more comfortable to use especially away from home.

I am terrified of crutches. my I walk is my go to thing. I hope this sore clears up soon. I have A tiny bead in the end of my scar line that does not cause any trouble. but yours is something different. Go easy if you can. be safe. love ya

@@ElectiveAmputation For sure. I gave them up when I still had two feet. I was using the I walk before my amputation for I think three weeks. I'm not sure if I would send you to A doctor just yet. It worries me that something is going on so close to the end of your bones.

Yes I do shave because I was told it was fine. But now I reconsidering if this is an ingrown hair. Normally they are more topical than this and easily resolved. I’m not sure yet

@@jeannie2548 ask all the questions you want! I have had this sore place for a few months but never took the time to really look at it. I think it is from my bone rubbing on my skin in the socket when I bottom out. But it got worse this week so i took the time and I looked closely and noticed a small “bead”

I’m curious why you always specify that you had “elective” surgery? I’m diabetic and had a bad left foot that was taking years to heal bc of a small wound and then I developed Charcot foot, a result of diabetes that’s not fixable. It can be slowed with a certain boot but you’re only delaying the inevitable. Long story short, I ended up going to the ER one Saturday in February bc my foot wouldn’t go down even after I offloaded and iced it abs elevated it. It got to where walking was extremely painful and was so swollen. The vascular surgeon came in after looking at my X-rays and said they needed to take my lower leg. I mean I knew I was in trouble when I went in, but I didn’t know we were nearing an amputation. I told him I needed a day so they scheduled me for surgery the next morning unless I said otherwise. I agreed to do it. Does that mean mine was elective? I’m not sure what the guidelines are. LOL I should get my leg next week!!!!
@ElectiveAmputation
@ElectiveAmputation 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you for this comment and I’m glad you are here! Congrats on the leg next week! That’s a big step! I’m not 100% sure what qualifies as elective when you are that close to amputation. I was several surgeries away when I decided to amputate. There was medical need but not medical necessity. I say “elective” a lot because that seems to be the first question from a lot of amputees. So I just eliminate that question right away haha
@juanfootjohn2125

I lost my right foot in much the same way. I asked for my amputation because I was just plain tired of dragging around a dieing foot. so that makes mine elective. Kerri was in a fused ankle for years. Amputation was her best option to get her whole life back. Yours sounds like it was an emergency amputation. We all wish you well learning to walk on your new leg. It hard at first. I'm sure you will do well. 🦿💪
