Realistically you can get around on a wooden stump these are by definition luxury prosthetics and since the R&D on these things is comparable to that of NASA working on lunar shielding in terms of testing, funding, and experimentation the price tag reflects that. Couple this with the fact that people without legs make up less than 1% percent of the worlds population you begin to understand how they're able to corner a market and make you pay out the ass for "required" items

This is what living in capitalism while disabled is meant to be. The disabled are expected to pay for every ounce of support that is necessary for them to receive because it is seen as a burden to able bodied people to accommodate those who aren't like them. It's bigger than even disability, this idea extends to queer and racial issues as well. Being perceived as 'other' will add a tax to your existence. Edit: thought I would add that I say this as an trans queer and autistic person, and each one of my perceived 'abnormalities' affects how I live my life and what things I buy. I think this system is a nightmare and if disability aids were subsidized by the government then people who are ambulatorily challenged wouldn't have to spend so much money on something that is necessary for them to own.

Whoa that’s a lot. I hope you don’t mind me asking but is it made with special things? Because of some of my disabilities I have to use a wheelchair sometimes. My insurance didn’t want to cover it and renting one is too expensive (about $60 a month) so I couldn’t go out of the house most days. But a nice family in my neighborhood paid for one and it cost $200 (while is still expensive is nowhere near what you had to pay). I’m just curious as to the reason yours cost so much.

Meh, partially. Insurance will pay it from the premiums of every insured person + in some cases government grants (like here in europe for any non-private insurance company in most countries). True, these things are paid for in taxes, but two things: In the UK, and probably a number of other countries, the people in lower pay grades actually pay less in taxes than comparable Americans. So, the same prosthetics probably go for 10k or less in reasonable countries.

The problem is many Americans don't want to pay taxes for stuff they don't use, like schools if they don't have kids or prosthetics if they have all their limbs. When I was an insurance adjuster for a 200 bed hospital in the 1980s, I learned that the part showing as a discount to the insurance company is all markup so the provider can show a whopping discount. What's left after the discount reflects cost plu 20%, the actual fair price.

I always got my back braces (before my spinal fusion) from Hanger! Fun fact, they are the ones who created the prosthetic fin for the dolphin that inspired the movie Dolphin Tale!

Hanger clinic. I’ve been there. My doctor said in reality it cost them like 350 to make most items. He said the most expensive one he prescribes is about $1,800. The issue is that insurance won’t pay 1,800. They’ll negotiate for $800. So the company has made them cost 60,000 so that insurance thinks they are getting a huge discount. He was blowing of steam because my insurance wouldn’t cover what I need and I really did need it. Instead it wanted me to try a “compressor”. Insurance as a whole has made American healthcare a mess. Yet for some reason people fight to keep it privatized.

This scares me so much... My insurance covered my trainer leg and stuff but I feel because of my insurance I won't have what I need to be comfortable. It still uncomfortable and kind of painful to use my prosthetic to the point I never use it really. Maybe it's just me not used to it yet but I was told I wouldn't feel any pain

Hoo. The Hanger bag reminds me of the time they applied the pressure the the wrong side of my sisters knee brace, having misread the doctors’ directives…

As a below knee amputee from the UK this shocks me. Over here.....free, no insurance needed. No having to wait x months for new socks/liners/sleeves.

I love your positivity and great attitude, your also so super cute by the way! The prices are so crazy right! I feel ya though, between my 2 titanium knee replacements, hip replacement, pain stimulator and inspire implants twice because the first one didn't work correctly, I also I had 2 neck fusions with titanium plates and screws in my cervical spine, with all that hardware in my body it's worth around a half a million ($500.000) and that's not including about 7 other surgeries I've had that don't include metal or machines. I can say I'd much rather be driving a Ferrari instead...haha. Thank you for you videos, they rock ✌️

hanger's where I get my knee braces. whenever we hit the family insurance deductable amount, we think about things like, how long ago did I last replace my brace and how likely are we to hit that deductable next year, because when we hit it then insurance fully pays for the brace, but scheduling to get in and get fitted for a new one takes at least a month. fortunately I don't need my brace all the time but when I do, I can't stand without it, let alone walk. Darn teenage me wasn't careful enough.

People are always shocked when they hear how much my service dog actually costs, but it helps them understand why I am so darn protective of her. Not only is she an living, breathing being that deserves to be treated well, and my literal lifeline and freedom, but she also is more expensive than a luxury car. So please remember that next time you encounter a service dog or any health/mobility device, and treat them with care.

Here in Portugal the public hospital pays for 1 leg every (around) 5 years for adults. Let's say the one showed on the video as my father had, if he needed a new one between the state supplied. A new one would cost him around 5000€. The sleeves he used (the ones with a metal connection on the bottom 25€ socks are cheap also the foot is made from a reversed mold of the existing foot so the size and shape matches and I believe the also match the color in his case didn't matter as it was always hidden. Still have the thing lying around.

i love disability shopping hauls! the hanger bag reminds me of all the otc and rx braces i have had over the past 15 years! all don’t even fit under my bathroom sink! so wish more was covered by insurance. i have only had a handful covered by insurance, and cannot even begin to fathom the amount of out of pocket cost of being disabled.

It depends on what’s needed case by case. 2 liners and 2 sleeves can be a standard $1700 is what most insurance will even allow and a new socket can easily be at least 9k and include liners.

My guess was upwards of 100K bucks because everything medical is TOTALLY overpriced these days!!! So, Bob Barker gave one of the other contestants the showcase because I bid too high but I knew it wasn't cheap! When I was young insurance worked differently. The insurance company paid all the bills and my family never saw bill one. But then, dad had incredible insurance being in the union at GE. These days no one has that kind of insurance. Today it's more like what we see in "As Good As It Gets" in this scene between Helen Hunt and Harold Ramis... Dr. Martin Bettes : [looking over Spencer's medical records] Have they done blood tests on him? Carol Connelly : [laughs bitterly] Yeah. Dr. Martin Bettes : Only in the emergency room, or when he was well? Carol Connelly : Emergency room only. Dr. Martin Bettes : Okay. And how about skin testing for allergies? Carol Connelly : No. Dr. Martin Bettes : [looks up] No standard scratch test, they poke him with a needle...? Carol Connelly : No. I asked, they said it wasn't covered under my plan and that it wasn't necessary anyways. Why, should they have? Dr. Martin Bettes : Well... Carol Connelly : [beat] F***ing HMO b*st*rd pieces of sh*t! Beverly Connelly (Mom) : Carol! Carol Connelly : I'm sorry. Dr. Martin Bettes : It's okay. Actually, I think that's their technical name. It was refreshing to hear that kind of honesty from an actual doctor, even though it was in a fictional story. But, when we do not dwell on our society's shortcomings and pay more attention to each other we can have more joy in our journey. Thank you for sharing today, my friend. Adventure ever on, Phat

Any mobility equipment not funded by the NHS over here in the UK is quite expensive but you can get a discount on quite a lot of things if you are VAT ( value added Tax) exempt, eg children & pensioners some others can claim the tax back too .

Yep. Everything is expensive. I have Charcot's disease in my right ankle. I have to have this custom giant boot just to be able to walk. The boot alone was $2200. I'm probably going to have to have to have surgery sometime in the near future to either have rods & pins put in the lower part of my leg it have the leg removed. Anyway, that's what brought me to your channel. I just wanted to get some advice ahead of time in case I become an amputee shortly. Anyways, I like your videos. Very fun and educational. Thank you.
