Wherein I practice using the "Stair Function" of my Genium X3. It allows a user to walk step over step up stairs and step over small obstacles.
Why I Got An Above Knee Amputation: • TL:DR WHY I GOT AN AKA...

I love my Genium X3, but it sure is hard to do these things. I recommend trying to relax - it’s more the motion the knee is looking for. I first thought it took a good hard “flick” because that was the impression the physical therapists gave me. Hey good job! I found going downstairs scarier than up.

You are inspiring. I am impressed with your anility to so easily and comfortably walk down the stairs without using the handrail. I like that you are keeping your expectations in check and know that it will take some time and a lot of reps to get better at it. Looking forward to the follow up where you fly up the stairs and soar over the obstacles.

So cool to see you practicing this. I have the genius and have had it for a bit over a year. I can do the downstairs walk pretty comfortably now (though not comfortable with handsfree yet). Upstairs and accident avoidance kind of look like your practice, just can't trigger it consistently and my hip flexors need strengthening too. Thanks for sharing.

I have the c leg and dream about this knee. I’m into a lot of extreme sports still and this knee is the only one that’s reliably waterproof. It’s crazy the amount of trust us AKs have to put into these prosthetics. Running for the first time, I just expected to break bones. The gait is so stretched at running speed and the knee is pretty much flexed like your going to sit. I’ve yet to go up stairs step over step, thanks for the inspiration

One way to help your hip flextion is to hold on to something and step on to something with your right foot as high as you can step while arching yor back slightly. I achieved full range of motion by stepping into and out of a chevy 4x4 with a 4" lift with no step, from ground to floorboard. If your leg is over 8 -10lbs, start trimming it down, get rid of the rotator and the bulky socket and heavy foot. These heavy items will help build your strength at first, but will hinder you ultimately. I can step straight over items without engaging anything on my leg. You will only get great when your socket o.d. is the same diameter as your good leg, your bone has a lot less floating at this time. Not many of us walking with aka, I have only met 2 walkers in 3 years, but met about 30 in wheelchairs. Also find a bettef prosthetic supplier, they are gagiting you up to make more of a profit than they are in helping you.

So it's a skill to be learned, but also trusted. Sometimes I don't trust my own knees....and they are my original ones (haha). When the issue happens...I usually end up on my butt somewhere.
@douglassinclair6444

That looks about right. I have the X3, and I have all but given up on the stair function for ascension. My issue is the socket gets jammed into my hip joint and doesn't allow me to fully flex my residuum to get to the next step. I'm going to try and have the socket cut down in the frontal plane to allow for better extension. I hope that will give me a better ROM in flexion.
@rysammy
@rysammy 2 жыл бұрын
One of your issues is the knee mounting point on your socket which needs to be more lined up with the center of your femur. Once the mounting point is centered, you will get more hip flexion and better heel strikes as well as a better stride and gate. You are short stepping when you walk, meaning your stride is shortened on your left side, again bc of the mounting point on your socket which puts your stump at about a ten degree angle in front of your good leg. Stand with your thighs dead parallel and you will see how far back your left foot is, which is the amount taken from your stride not to mention the the loss of flection.

I noticed a few episodes back, you had a 300z on set. Are you able to drive manual transmission cars with your prosthesis on? I still have both legs, but I suspect one day there is a chance it will be removed. Im a car guy and want to know if Ill be able to continue on.
@AmputeeOT
@AmputeeOT 2 жыл бұрын
Probably I could if I got driving mode programmed into my knee. That 300z was my friend’s car. I think maybe you were talking about the red fiero? I like how you referred to it as “on set” LOL that makes me feel like a professional.

It really sucks being an AK. My husband is and he has tried the Reho power knee and doesn't like it. Basically, the knee got confused as to which function was needed based on what phase of walking he was in. Case in point: he was walking on a flat, dry surface for over a mile when without warning, the Reho went into the stair-step mode, causing him to experience a hard and dangerous fall. The software just isn't right and as a consequence, he doesn't trust the leg.
