Christina I am so very glad that I live in the UK! Thanks to the NHS my prosthetic costs are free. As I have explained before I am lucky if a socket lasts 6 months. My Prosthetist Mark Croysdale simply orders what I need. Also of course the surgery and aftercare are free. I had the 13th re amputation of the stump last Thursday (12/8/21) and I am now on London Irish Ward at RNOH Stanmore with a very fetching purple plaster cast on the residual limb!

I love my leg guy. I only know how much my legs cost that I signed for when they were done...I am a Lbka...my first leg was $9,500..second was $12,000 third was $7,000 and I am now due for my 4th leg here in a couple of weeks. I am in a suction socket so I need sleeves, liners, socks etc that I know are extra..luckily I have Medicaid that pays for it all

I can tell you that Medicare bills differently. I was made a socket about two months after my amputation (RBKA) and my leg reduced in size rather quickly after that. I was told that I wasn't elibible through insurance for a new socket until I have to use more than 11 layers of socks, and/or wait at least 6 months. By then, I will also qualify to move from a K-2 to a K-3/K-4 foot and ankle, replacing my entire prosthesis.

Hi, I live in Australia, I am a left BKA since 2012, I am currently on my 4th prosthetic leg and have an additional leg for swimming. I have the suction sleve and socket system. The cost for all this plus all annual check ups plus all the extra bits and pieces such as socks plus the odd emergency visit plus diagnostic visits amount to a total sum of $0:00. I thank God for the health system we have in Oz, TAX dollars well spent.

I'm a right below knee amputee (RBKA) and in my state (Nevada) I have to pay for new sockets (or at least get them approved by my insurance) and any liners, sleeves or socks that my prosthetist orders for me. I don't pay for the office visits, but I do have a share of cost each time I receive a piece of equipment. Luckily for me, my share of cost is only $150, no matter how much equipment I receive, as long as it's in a single office visit. Talking to other amputees around the US, they seem to have different amounts that they have to pay depending on the state.

Great video, Christina, as always. This info is valuable for US amps. I'm a Canadian. Here in the Great White North, we have provincial health coverage plus employer-sponsored plans, if you have one. Those lovely gov plans are about two decades behind the market price for prosthetics. For the average person, they cover about US$2K for a foot, US$4k for a knee; and US$5k for a socket. One time and done. They don't care about your K2,3,4 level. Just my estimates based on my recent claims - and I've been an AKA for 47 years. Replacements are allowed only after 3+ years with cause. Unless you are mil/police, there is NO WAY that you will ever get an MPK knee covered under insurance. I'm timing my retirement so that I can get at least one more socket or knee out of my miserly (US based) employer's health plan here. I'm envious of all the MPK people on KZbin because I may never have one.

Congratulations on your upgrade! I also have a Genium X3, since spring of 2020. ( Oct. 2019 senior citizen driver cited for failure to yield at a stop sign, as he traveled westbound at 30mph, struck me as I was heading northbound at 35mph…on my motorcycle). Question: can I switch Prothetist/vender after they have been paid that large lump sum? Thanks.

Thanks for the cost breakdown. I do see a wide range of the prosthetic prices. As for the joint replacements, they are one of the most profitable medical procedures for hospitals.

True. I’m bk and it was probably half that sum. I’ve been on a prosthetic leg for about 3 weeks. It was very painful and it took some visits(which were made with haste) and I think he got it! Good luck to all in our condition.

Left AKA, and I've gone through 2 legs in 4 years so far. Neither really worked for me. My natural left leg was 1 inch longer, and they keep making my prosthetic leg the same as my right one. I'm 46, and not used to the same lengths.

were did you get your information from. They do charge the insurance company for each visit, at 15 minute incruments. When you the knee and foot the insurance company is charged for each component .

Ohio Bureau of Workers comp is different in their pay scale as well as how they structure their payment for services. They pay for any replacement parts and additional office visits for repairs outside of the initial fitting and adjustment period. I don't think my provider could cover the number of visits or replacement parts with what he gets paid for the lump sum payment of the prosthetic. I know I wouldn't want to if I were him.

Wow I live in Canada and we don’t have to pay for office visits. We only pay out of pocket for the high end knees. The basic knees are free. A genium is $60k CND. A x3 is worth $96k CDN. So in USD they are worth $48k and $77k USD respectively.

I’m not sure how the pricing works for my RBK prosthetic. The invoice for mine was a base price of around $5500 that insurance covered and then I have a hardship claim that the state picks up after that. My leg guy said that I’ll be getting an upgrade after a month or so and I guess that’s covered as well. Praise God I feel very blessed getting where I’m at. I’ve seen similar legs on eBay, yes eBay going for around $500 or so. 🤷‍♂️

What insurance do you have? I have AARP from The Hartford. Whenever I need a new liner or sleeve I have to get an Rx for insurance purposes. And the insurance company pays for it. BTW, I use Hanger.

They are very good prosthetics. I only have state insurance as my accident left me unable to work for awhile and they did not cover “microprocessor knee’s”. You can find used online sometimes. I’ve seen them priced from 4K-10k used. Good luck.

I'm sure there's plenty of variables, but how long on average does a person keep a prosthetic leg?
@TechnoCaveman1
@TechnoCaveman1 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on how active the person is and the quality of the parts. In my case about every two years on average. My last change was triggered by an annoying click that occurred with every step I took. After months of troubleshooting they just gave up and built me a new leg. I guess you could say that prosthetic was on it's last leg! :-)

Depends on many factors. When I first became an amputee some 40 years ago I knew a former WW II RAF pilot who was shot down over Germany lost his right leg. It was replaced whilst he was a POW in 1943. He was still using it in 1983! Whilst not being as technically sophisticated as a modern limb (even in the 1980's) The build quality was truly superb and he swore by it!
