The crazy thing about how the Meteor actually performs is that it can literally control throttle, so it would travel towards the target at a certain speed then the idea is that it would accelerate towards the target when it got closer, which is what gives it such a crazy no escape zone

The Meteor missile has the ability to throttle up and down, it’s range is superior to the AMRAAM and it’s more maneuverable. How it’s modeled in DCS well that’s highly subjective based on the fact that true Meteor specs are highly classified. Great vid as always GS.
@christianm15333 жыл бұрын
Agreed. But since energy expenditure by drag is squared that of velocity at high speed flows (M1+), halving the speed (M2,5 instead of M5) will reduce your energy expenditure to a quarter (correction: Energy expeniture to overcome drag is cubed. So energy use is reduced to 1/8). I'm sure that anyone with basic math skills can draw some conclusions from that. Either way. A missile coming at you at M2,5 with energy to spare is still an extremely lethal missile last time I checked.
@collander77663 жыл бұрын

Strange modeling. You can't jam a modern missile this way. As Gripen will send midair updates to the Meteor and IRIS-T. Gripen has very directional and very jam-proof updates to both missiles and other Gripens. You need to jam both the aircraft and the missile continuously with more power than a focused directional link (not going to happen unless you stand in the direct beam way). Some "Jam blipping" ain't going to do squat.

RX: a different strategy vs Gripen. Fire a pair off from initial highest altitude, crank, shoot again, crank more, shoot again. The direction of the cranks should match his cranks. There's an old sniper's maxim when shooting at targets running between cover. If you miss, shoot slightly ahead of general direction of travel. Then shoot behind, then shoot exactly where your original shot missed. It's very effective I'm told. I don't think human behavior is going to change bc you're sitting in an aircraft. What you should end up with is missiles somewhat line-abreast closing in a pincer maneuver as the 1st two missiles probably lofted and therefore will take more time getting to the target, the 3rd missiles you'd want to loft a little (find that launch altitude) and the 4th, not at all. This should have them all arriving at about the same time from different directions and angles of approach. This would be a lot more effective if the missiles were talking to each other or to "The Hive" via DataLink, which is still SciFi (but much closer than in '04 when I was thinking on it), but I think this would be worth investigating in DCS if you can find a willing adversary pilot. If I were that pilot I'd want to 1st investigate the performance of Meteor in DCS to know when to crank, recommit and when to get the hell out of Dodge. Meteor may well change the dimensions of the MAR.

The Meteor can control its speed and fuel comsumption. It means that it can slow down it's engine to economize fuel or to have more time to maneuver into the target, it can save its fuel to use its engine in final maneuvers to hit the target. Meaning that it doesnt rely only in its kinect energy like other misiles, that wastes all its fuel and after goes with no energy to pursuit the bandit. It performs MUCH better than a AIM-120.
@MrFarnanonical3 жыл бұрын
Slowing down the missile isn't something they're going to use against a fighter, once you lose that energy it's not coming back. The slower the missile goes the easier it is to defeat, plain and simple, it doesn't matter how much fuel it still has. forcing the missile to pull Gs is going to bleed energy. The thing that makes the Meteor dangerous for fighters is the speed, not the theorical range, not it's fuel efficiency. When they talk about these missiles having a massive 300 mile range it's exactly like the Aim-54, you're not going to hit a fast moving fighter at 300 miles, you might be able to hit a bomber, or a tanker. The Meteor should be quite a bit more lethal at lets say. 40-50 miles than an Aim-120, just because of how fast it is. It's still going to be fast if the enemy is defending hard, trying to to slow it down.

The modelling on the Meteor is strange. The is only a slim chance that the F-15 would survive any of these within a 50 mile radius coming from high altitude. The no escape zone is about 30 miles, all altitudes, as the missile will fight drag less on low altitude by controlling the burn. The low altitude difference between the AMRAAM and the Meteor is even greater than the high altitude one.

Gripen is on goodlookin airplane, at least my eyes like it alot. You should try em really against different Russian planes. Saab always announces that "What comes to Sukhois, E/F models are made most spesific against Sukhois. In that we have a black belt". Well those are commercials ofc that was alot on the airshows etc, when here in Finland new fighter type was about to be selected. Actually the pair that got to "finals" were F-35 and Gripen. F-35 won, somehow cost of usage / milage / Finnish defence politics that got f-35 points high. At the times f-35 was still banging head, with its problems, Gripen was long favorite for many pilots. It is very capable fighter, and BTW Meteor is a missile that has shown alot of interest in USAF also. If and when it is going to work as intented, it really will be very hot in markets. What is really problem for many ppl with Gripen is lack of real combat experience, though they were in Libya in NATO/US Air dominance coalition. But if I remember right, missions was left somekind of protecting the protectors of escorts / strikes etc. What i have heard, it is also very nice plane to fly and the turnaround time is worlds high-end! Though it has not reverse gear like Viggen did ;D It is also designed to use roads etc. as "moving" airfields / ground controls. Sweden has always been good making their own war gear for use in their own country. Also worlds top in Naval warfare. Specially in missileboats and submarines.

I once built a 50m2 Panasonic Astrovision LED 20 next to the runway at Såtenas Airforce base in Sweden for an airshow showing off the Gripen to the world. It was very loud when they took off and its the first and only time I built a screen with a feeling like I was in some kind of war effort. I was able to have a close look at the planes and I even was invited to have a go in the life size (nose section) simulator and being an aircraft nut (but not a pilot for 30yrs) I can proudly say that they asked me what I was flying? The Screen stuck out like a sore thumb on the horizon so I just pointed "that thing"....

Could you do videos where you try to use a Fox2 such as the aim 9x at the limit of its range (10miles? 19 miles?) and see if you can get a kill? Let the missile fly until it starts to detect the IR signature of the enemy.

I would have thought that extended range performance is exactly where the meteor excels over the AMRAAM, so if it's managing something the AMRAAM can't then that's not necessarily a sign that it's not performing true to life. If anything the meteor would boost its performance during the terminal phase so would have more left in the tank for the final engagement. Plus it doesn't look like it's flying an optimised flight path. While it's not going to do the same semi-ballistic flight of the AMRAAM, it would be advantageous to use some of its initial thrust to get into thinner air to fly more efficiently (I don't know how the meteor is programmed irl, but as an aerospace engineer, that's something I would expect to see.

If any F-15 wins a dogfight against a JAS-39 Gripen, the pilot in the JAS is highly incompetent. This is really a stupid, yet entertaining, comparison. The JAS 39E would kill even the F-35 in a dogfight. The F-22 Raptor though is the superior fighter jet. With that airplane there are no competitors. The f-22 Raptor will shoot down almost anything. Lucky for us the Russians doesn't have access to this planes technology.

AMRAAM and meteor are different types of missiles. the AMRAAM is a more traditional design that has it's initial rocket and that's it. The Meteor actually has a ram jet that extends it's range and keeps it's speed up while pursuing a target. In theory the meteor is more expensive, but it is the better missile. I imagine the big reason the US doesn't purchase the Meteor, or develop it's own is because longer range missiles are in development and US doctrine has been dictated by counter insurgency during the time nations have developed long range capable missiles

i like that METIOR.....i LOVE stuff that has a LONG burning rocket motor . like back in the 1.5 days..... the AIM7 had longer range (when bandit is cold) than the AIM120 simply due to the longer burning rocket motor . so having a missile with a LONG burn time.... but also long range that is a DANGEROUS missile . you can turn cold.... but unless you get up to mach 1.8+ fast.... its gonna chase you down
@shinei983 жыл бұрын
The Meteor is a really good BVR missile, probably one of the best, and then combine it with a really good plane with very good avionics and electronic suite, it will defenitely become the best of the best... The best thing about the Meteor is that its very unique, most if not all of its features and capabilities, you cannot find in any other BVRAAM... The liquid-propelled ramjet engines, controlled throttle, thrust vectoring, the ability to be redirected to the target/another target, the ability to be interoperated with other planes in the squadron (not just the mothership), its just amazing... No other BVRAAM have these features... That’s what makes the Meteor a gamechanger in modern BVR fight...
@MPI10003 жыл бұрын
It doesn't use liquid fuel. That's kind of a selling point as it very much simplifies maintenance and logistics. Liquid fueled rockets usually aren't stored fueled, as those types of fuels either tends to be Nasty Stuff (tm) or just simply volatile. The main fuel is solid, ignited by the booster, which then is called the 'gas generator'. Those gasses are very fuel-rich and oxygen-starved since it carries very little oxidizer in the fuel (conventional solid rocket propellant is ~80% oxidiizer) and when those gasses then meets the air from the inlet (which is very hot from compression) in the ramchamber it combusts. Kinda-sorta like an afterburner.

I will never not love the Eagle. The longer a BVR fight goes on the better it feels. As each guy goes cold and recommits, the Eagle just has the power to shoot from a higher and faster position. As the fight goes on you can just feel the other guy getting pummeled into the ground under the sheer weight of horsepower. You can feel it in this video from the Gripen's perspective. Every time GS turns hot, the Eagle is higher and faster than the Gripen. But alas, the Mighty Meteor conquers all.

@Blackbirdz20003 жыл бұрын
yup, he used an air superiority fighter as an air superiority fighter, yr a missile truck, play according to yr own strengths rather then trying to match these small nimble fighters.....launch multiple missiles one after another to unsettle them {you dont have to launch every time to shoot them down} meaning when it dodges one or 2 you launch another salvo to keep it busy n make it bleed energy{these small single engine fighters have this problem universally} Energy management can become an issue for them, you can see at one time Growling had barely dodged an incoming missile, now had he fired another one to complement him he would have been dead. Its just a matter of how long can you survive this onslaught. another way is that when he is busy loosing his energy you get yr fighter in an advantageous position n shoot him @ close ranges. But you for that to happen you really need to keep him busy with one salvo after another so he loses situational awareness, n doesnt get a chance to shoot you back or locate your own position.
