On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you prefer more up close and personal dogfights consider the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battle series and experience intense WWII aerial combat over famous battlefields such as Stalingrad, Moscow, Rhineland and Normandy. Fight in and against Russian, American, German, British warbirds such as the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, Bf-109, FW-190, Spitfire, Hurricane and rugged IL-2 Sturmovik attack plane. You can also fly legendary SPADS, Fokkers and Camels in WWI dogfights over the trenches of WWI and discover your inner Red Baron! And all of this can be experienced in jaw dropping virtual reality!
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

Hey 👋 Growling Sidewinder! Quick suggestion, ignore if you’ve already done this, but why not do a little series comparing the two planes ✈️ for operations / actions that Canada 🇨🇦 will likely do? Things like, air to air (BVM & dogfighting), anti-shipping, air to ground, interception (especially Russian aircraft - being in such close proximity) etc? See which one does the job better? Thank you for this great sim, 1. your point about public information and the accuracy of the 'mod' is spot on. SAAB made a statement recently that the JAS 39 E/F and even the C/D variants during exercises in the UK and other countries never use the ECM and the full suite of Electronic warfare during those exercises. They said basically what you said in this video, that they do not want anyone knowing the full capabilities of their Electronic warfare suite of the Gripen (Arrow II) 2. I can appreciate your train of thought for using the American missiles, however, with the cost savings, the BVR interceptor role over the artic, Canada would be very foolish not to purchase a large amount of Meteor missiles. 3. One of the great tactics of the Gripen is that essentially each JAS 39 is essentially an AWACS with real-time data sharing across the network with a range of at least 500km. With the new detection systems on E/F in a squadron flight one aircraft would have the radar on and the others would be 'radar silent'. The 'radar silent' aircraft can lock on to the enemy aircraft from the one active radar aircraft. Plus the meteor missile has two-way communication with the aircraft on the network, whereas it can re-acquire radar lock or even switch targets mid-flight. 4. At a Red Flag vs the F16 Viper the flight of 4 Gripens scored 5-0 5-2 5-0. The comment from the F16 pilots is that they never saw the Gripens. Note that these were the Gripen C/D models. 5. It is reported that the RCS of the Gripen E/F is .5 m2 and is less than 1/4 that of the CF18. Again Great job on this video. I would love to see a sim where all four squadrons of 15 each from their respective home base at Cold Lake and Baggotville defend against full scale Russian air invasion across the artic. Russian bombers escorted by Russian fighters. scenario 1 Gripen JAS-39 equipped with BVR meteor missiles plus other medium and short-range missiles. Note, use the best of the American or European missiles to arm the Gripen (Arrow mk. II) Supercruise at Mach 1.18, Note that since the E/F has 40% more internal fuel than the C/D I would suggest using the drop tanks for that amount of extra fuel to make it a more reasonable comparision when using the DCS Mod which is the C/D. Scenario 2 F35 armed with only the US-made missiles. max cruise speed is 0.7 Mach with short bursts at higher speeds. F35 only northern landing airport is Yellowknife. Although I was not able to confirm the time for the F35 to re-arm and refuel, most US jets average 30 minutes. Gripen can land re-arm and refuel at any of the 140 plus runways across the Yukon, NWT, Nunavut, and Northern Quebec. Whereas the ground crew of 1 tech and 5 'conscripts' with a 20-foot container dropped at the forward operating bases by cargo planes. Air-to-Air re-arm and refuel for the Gripen is between 7-10 minutes. Personally, I hope and pray that we (Canada) choose the JAS 39 E/F Arrow mark II. thanks from Edmonton, (originally from Nepean Ontario) PS my father's WWII squadrons 418 city of Edmonton Mosquito squadron 432 Leaside (Skipton-on-Swale) squadron - Lancaster 438 squadron Typhoon and Hurricane Eindhoven

The stories about the Gripen in training exercises are outstanding! From forming up formation with a typhoon undetected. 3 Gripens going up against 5 F-16’s for 3 rounds which ends up to 5-0 5-0 5-1. To 1 Gripen acting as the aggressor against 3 f-15’s, the Gripen then ended up scoring 2 kills with the last f-15 escaping home.

@Jay_the_AV8R
@Jay_the_AV8R 2 жыл бұрын
@@ryanestes7331 purchase price might be similar but the factor you’re not considering is ownership cost. The Gripen is a technology developed and understood, mature you could say. It’s not too different than other 4th gen platforms. F-35 is a 5th gen stealth aircraft, per hour cost will be much higher. Then you have to have specialized facilities for RAM coating, special personnel, new training etc. So overall the Gripen is much cheaper.

There is a Facebook group arguing F-35 vs Gripen. It is called Canada's next fighter. Funny, since 1947 Canadian fighters have had to have 2 engines to deal with the arctic. This is why numerous single engine planes have been eliminated early in the competitions. Now the twin engined plane is out and the battle is between 2 single engined fighters. Ah politics... how things are always changing but never change.
@leogibney
@leogibney 2 жыл бұрын
The battle over 2 engined aircraft is not a political battle. It's a matter of technology. Obviously in the 50s, 60s and 70s, Engine technology was sub-par, that is why Canada always liked the 2 engines. But given current technological advantages, the single reliable engine design makes more sense. Also the Super Hornet was eliminated becaus Boeing promised basically no severe economical benefits and also, Canada has a not so fun history with the company... (C-Series, 2017)

Either aircraft would be good, the lack of stealth hurts the Gripen, however i feel that it is probably more suited to the role of aircraft Canada needs (a fast agile fighter for protecting/enforcing our airspace, with the ability to perform ground attack). The F35 can do both as well but seems more geared towards ground attack and first strike/ penetrating contested airspace. Canada's missions tend to be multi national coalitions and are not usually involved in a lot of first strike missions. Lots of factors to weigh up, how beneficial the Gripen transfer of technology and ability to build whatever % of the aircraft. Canada is already making parts for the F35, we won't be getting anymore, and probably won't lose any of that production if we went with the Gripen (although the US can be petulant at times) it really depends on what offers both teams can bring to the table as the per unit cost of the F35 seems to be coming down significantly and I don't have any reliable numbers for either of the maintenance costs for both aircraft. Either option is a good choice

Actually the Gripen can't supercruise in any relevant configuration. For Canada the anemic little jet will always have at least two external tanks and it can't supercruise with just one tank. The Gripen-E is not more powerful, it may have a larger engine but it's draggier and heavier. It has exactly the same poor thrust to weight ratio. It is not known as the "Peasant's Fighter" for nothing.

The Gripen is completely compatible with NATO/U.S. It carry nearly every weapon that NATO uses, and can also carry Swedish and French armaments. Additionally, the data link is also compatible. All this has been proven in Red Flag exercises. While it might be true that the Gripen is not the most politically positive choice, it is my opinion that it is the most economical of the two choices, especially with the tech transfer and domestic production deal that Sweden is willing to do.

Gripen vs Panther for Canada? My vote is for the JAS39. They are both extremely capable aircraft, but with the enormous- relatively- maintenance requirements for the F-35 it feels like the Gripen would be the perfect solution for my high-pockets government. We'd get all the manufacturing offsets, a weapon system proven under austere conditions and designed to be rapidly reserviced between missions and one facet the Swedes practice- FAARPs set up close to major roads as the Gripen's short field characteristics are to allow this. The budget would also allow for more aircraft and the wonderful Meteor. So, while to me it makes sense, the addled decision-makers In Ottawa will pick the one that makes the least sense. I just have this sinking feeling we're gonna end up with a bunch of fat amys. what would be really ideal is if we could buy both, because NATO missions/long range patrol/far north SAR doesn't require stealth, and we could potentially build a bunch of extra wings (in country no less) for gripens to soak up flight hours. what would be really spicy is if Boeing wants to kiss and make up with some F15EXs at bargain prices.

@@roycooper1356 the gripen is going to be irrelevant against peer threats within 2 decades. Stealth isn’t a simple yes or no, it’s a spectrum. It doesn’t make you invisible or undetectable, it just makes you a lot harder to detect. More importantly it makes it much harder for the enemy to maintain a track on you. This will ALWAYS be an advantage. As sensors improve they will be more able to pick up small signatures like those of stealth aircraft, but they will also get even better at detecting larger signatures even through heavy ECM. This means non stealth aircraft will need thousands of times as much jamming power as a stealth aircraft in order to survive, that’s just not feasible. There’s also the fact that the F-35 has far superior avionics to the gripen E. Better and larger radar More and better spread radar warning receivers Better ECM Better IR capabilities (DAS blows any IRST out of the water) better MAWS (DAS acts as a missile approach warning system) Integrated targeting pod Better datalinks Better everything really

In war getting support from Sweden is more problematic. The Atlantic could become an issue. Obviously that is negated if Canadian aircraft are stationed in Europe. Gripen should have focused on optimizing production and cutting down costs, not trying to shove expensive tech to the platform that dont have performance to match the top tier and doesnt have utility of the lower performance but loaded with the latest tech + stealth F-35. the Stealth is the decisive factor here, if F-35 didnt have stealth, it would be interesting fight between the two, as it is its no contest...

All aircraft, civil or military, publicly or privately owned/operated, constantly require upgrades and modification’s throughout their service life, paid for by whoever owns/operates it at the time of the upgrade/modification. Some modifications are mandatory through national/international aviation administrative requirements, and others are elective. Regardless, the owner/operator “foots the bill.” They’re not like safety recalls on automobiles or appliances, where the manufacturer performs them at no or little cost to the owner. Look at it as purchasing a pickup truck, then deciding to install a lift kit. The owner pays. In the case of Canada building their own fleet of Saab 39’s under license, Canadair (the likely manufacturer who built military fighters for RCAF in the past) is state owned, giving Canada full control.

@@darrenvanderwilt1258 The difference being that with the F-35 you have not only the US but an entire collective of economically large countries that can sponsor and fund continuous upgrades (i.e. the actual development costs which SAAB-wankers so conveniently forget) while sharing costs and experience/know-how while with the Gripen it will literally all fall on Canada to do it. Just a tiny detail you missed. As an example, throughout its career the Gripen has only received a handful of upgrades to its capabilities, most of them relating to software. Meanwhile its direct competitor, the F-16, has dozens of variants with different upgrades where customers are free to pick and choose which ones to install and without really having to go through the development themselves. This is for instance why the Gripen has such a limited weapons and pod variety.

@@johanlassen6448 Not sure where you get the idea of cost and experience/know-how sharing not taking place based on platform. In fact, most western air forces and aircraft share the same subsystem components and hardware manufacturing subcontractors. They also routinely participate in joint operational training exercise programs. Their systems are all highly integratabtle with each other. Receiving/requiring fewer upgrades/revisions can mean that forward thinking was built in. Believe me, software upgrades, improvements, or modifications are far easier and less expensive than with hardware. Talking about development costs, the Lightning II-wankers seem easily willing to look aside at the massive cost overruns experienced by the F-35 program. The Gripen has had time to work out the kinks, while the F-35 still has a few more years to iron out.

@@darrenvanderwilt1258 They do not. The concrete systems differ. If you want a new radar on the Gripen you need to develop a brand new radar. If you want a new IRST you need to develop a new one. If you want better sensor fusion you need to develop a new system. If you want a new datalink you need to develop that as well. None of those things are shared between platforms. Do you know how many engine upgrades the Gripen has ever received? One, when it switched from a lincense-built American engine to another license-built American engine. That engine-line however is dead. So what will happen if Canada decides that the Gripen needs a better engine in order to power more advanced systems? Well guess what: Canada will be fucked. Joint training has nothing to do with developing new systems. Its actually the other way around - the F-35 has gotten out of development hell and is now steadily getting cheaper, while the Gripen has been delayed repeatedly. Reality hits hard.

The RCAF will buy 88 F-35s and no Gripens. Nobody wants the Gripen. It is nothing but a warmed over 1980's design with poor performance and it cannot do what the SAAB marketers claim.
