When I switched to Calcium Chloride, it was worth the extra 10 bucks for a 50 lb bag. We have -15 degree winters in the midwest all the time and recently tried it out on a -10 degree day with lots of ice and snow. 2 hours later, path was completely melted and just slush that I shoveled aside. Stuff really is night and day from regular, crappy rock salt.

Thanks for watching. Since ice can still form even with ice melt sprinkled on, the best prevention is shoveling after each snow fall and removing the ice before it builds up.

How soon should I apply salt ? 1 hour , 1 day , as the snow falls , just after ? When is the better time ?

Thanks for watching. Always try to shovel the snow before it accumulates and be mindful when the temperature is close 0°C or 32°F. That's when snow will melt and ice will form. If you clear off the snow before hand you can prevent the ice from forming. If you do have ice that has formed, apply the salt and then remove the ice once it has started to melt. Depending on the temperatures you might just have slush after the salt is applied but be careful if the temperature drops after as that slush can form into ice.
