Longplay and review for "Thrust" on the Amstrad CPC!
"Thrust" is an all time classic often appearing in many top lists of the best UK 8-bit home computer games, and it's about damn time someone covered the Amstrad version in full on KZbin!!
On this special longplay we're going to beat all 24 missions (or planets) going through 4 loops of 6 levels at a time; including the first normal 6 levels, then reverse gravity, invisible walls, and finally reverse gravity with invisible walls!! It's going to be a long longplay!! But we've got some interesting things to cover like video footage and comparison with the other 7 official versions, tape loading music(?!), its arcade coin-op inspiration and whatever else we can find!

Thank you Xyphoe for discovering this gem for me, which I have been enjoying for a short time. You are right that there are few games that incorporate this mechanics, this physics, gravitational. Congratulations on the epic longplay.

Juggernaut on the Amstrad has wire frame graphics and has your truck attached to a trailer and has a similar Physics of a main player attached to another unit trying not to 'Jack-knife' it. Albeit no Gravity, just acceleration and turning circles but has some similarities in gameplay as like Thrust when attached to the orb.

There is a 32 bit version - the Acorn Archimedes Version (the BBC being the parent machine - like the C64 is to the Amiga). It is almost identical looking to the BBC/Amstrad/C64 version, including loading screen, ONLY it plays so unbelievably smoothly without any flicker! I have played it on real Acorn hardware and also a Raspberry Pi with RISCOS (NOT Linux) installed. (also REAL , but more modern, hardware)

I seem to remember Thrust was first released by Firebird as a budget game but Superior did a version for the Acorn micros that was full price but maybe I've got it the wrong way around. I sort of remember the Acorn community back then complaining that it was a full price release on their formats but again so many years have passed I might have that wrong. Just thinking about Acorn games a bit like this makes me think of Spheres of Chaos on the Archimedes which is the best asteroids game I've ever played. I think there was a conversion to PC. Man, I loved that game. I played Thrust and enjoyed it but didn't get too far into it and so I'd rate it about average because basically I didn't have the patience for it.
@Xyphoe
@Xyphoe Жыл бұрын
Yea someone else mentioned in the comments there was Archimedes release but I never heard of it, and could find no mention of it anywhere on any sites whilst researching Thrust - so that came as a big surprise!

GG on completing the game m8! Looked mega tough! Hat's off for your dedication to complete it! I had this on the C64 bitd, good game for £1:99. No Amiga port? It did have a few unofficial versions....check out Zarathrusta, Fly Harder, The Executioner and Rotor sometime

Oh you're not the first to say Thrust II wasn't so bad.... I remember it being really bad but maybe my memories are wrong. I must check it out! No doubt though that Thrust (the first game) is vastly superior I'm sure!!

Well said about the frustration. Read the reviews of my Android port... Makes me smile every time! The smoothest version is the BBC original, that is peak Thrust. The lack of music is fine since it's only playing for 5 seconds before we press fire to start the damn game anyway! 😂
@Xyphoe
@Xyphoe Жыл бұрын
Hehe! Thanks man! I honestly couldn't tell the difference gameplay wise between BBC and C64 versions... I had both running side by side in emus and was switching back and forth between them. Both felt and played identical to me. If I'm wrong, fair enough. In terms of comparing on real hardware - they're both on a par with each other. For playing via emulation... I'll go with the C64 one for ease of controls.

I would say the 2600 version is best!!! Joystick controls and absolutely nails it. Can’t understand why it isn’t an option for all of them. Looking around for keys really takes you out of the experience. The 2600 joystick controls are very responsive and great for precise flying. All versions with keys seem a significant step backwards after playing this. The base game is awesome across the board so it comes down to controls. The 2600 version has it over all the others in this regard. Never thought I would say that but there you go. Kudos to those who put that together. Yes, I think you have missed the two best versions 2600 and Vectrex is good as well.

Hi Xyphoe, Not all releases of Thrust have the loading music. Only one of versions have music. Whist I was trying to get all 10 Firebird Musical loader releases I went through about 3 different thrusts before I got a musical one.
