The Autocar Company is an American specialist manufacturer of severe-duty, Class 7 and Class 8 vocational trucks, based in Hagerstown, Indiana. Started in 1897[1] in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as a manufacturer of Brass Era automobiles, and trucks from 1899, Autocar is the oldest surviving motor vehicle brand in the Western Hemisphere.
The last cars were produced in 1911 and the company continued as a maker of severe-duty trucks. In 1953 Autocar was taken over by the White Motor Company which made Autocar their top-of-the-line brand. White was taken over in turn by Volvo Trucks in 1981 with Autocar continuing as a division. In 2001, Autocar was acquired by GVW Group, LLC, which revived Autocar as an independent company. Autocar now builds four models of custom-engineered, heavy-duty trucks and has regained leading positions in several vocational segments.
Autocar experimented with a series of vehicles from 1897, with a tricycle, "Autocar No. 1", now in the collection of the Smithsonian.[6] In 1899 Autocar built the first motor truck ever produced for sale in North America.[7] The first production Autocar automobile was a 1900 single cylinder chain drive runabout. About 27 were made. In 1901 Autocar built the first car in North America to use shaft drive. This vehicle is also now in the Smithsonian collection.[8]
The 1904 Autocar was equipped with a tonneau, it could seat four passengers and sold for US$1700. The horizontal-mounted flat twin engine, situated at the front of the car, produced 11 hp (8.2 kW). This was a somewhat unusual engine design for the time, with most companies producing inline designs. A three-speed transmission was fitted. The steel and wood-framed car weighed 1675 lb (760 kg). The early cars had tiller steering.
In 1905 the company was selling the Type XII car for $2,250 and another it called the Type X for $1,000. It discontinued the Type XI and sold the last of them in 1905. The cars then had a wheel steering with left-hand drive.
The Type X was a runabout. During the 1905-1906 model year the company produced 1000 Type X cars. The manufacture of 500 Type XV runabouts was authorized for 1907 in place of 500 touring cars (Type XIV) in addition to the 1000 runabouts already planned. At special meeting on June 19, 1906 held at 711 Arcade Building, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the board authorized the hiring of a general manager by the name of Harry A. Gillis at a salary of $10,000 per year. Production of 300 Type XVI cars and 500 Type XVII were authorized during a board meeting on November 21, 1906.
Commercial vehicles were made the focus from 1907 and soon outnumbered cars.[9]
As of 1911, Autocar was making only trucks. The first model, the Type XVII, had a 97-inch wheelbase, a one and a half-ton capacity, and a two-cylinder gasoline engine under the seat. Later engines had 4 and 6 cylinders, and wheelbases became longer. Inline engines became the company's focus.
During World War I, the Canadian Armoured Autocar used an Autocar chassis.
In 1929, Autocar sold 3300 units, though the number fell to 1000 in 1932 and continued to decline during the Great Depression. Larger trucks with "Blue Streak" gasoline engines and Diesel engines, mainly from Cummins, came later.
During World War II, Autocar supplied 50,000 units to the military, including specialty vehicles such as half-tracks; during its entire prewar history, the company had only built 70,000 units. Autocar ranked 85th among United States corporations in the value of World War II military production contracts.[10] Civilian production resumed in 1944 and sales increased greatly after the war. Autocar soon had 100 dealers.

I am about to build this kit. I'm going to delete the dump box and make this a scrap metal hauler! I love fabricating new parts. Auto car was a bad ass truck. I want to make mine on the edge, something more masculine, something that says, look how strong I am! I'm an auto car, not some Detroit wana be!!!! Wish I could show you pics when I'm done. I was a welder all my life, I have built many real trucks. Now I build from memory. This one will be fun!

I'm subscribed to your channel, I like your videos. I wish I knew people to recommend them to but all my friends are dead. Happens when your old. I've built models for 60 years. My Grandma would give me 5 bucks on my birthday and I would buy a model and paint. You could buy an AMT model back then for 2.00 bucks, throw in a couple of bottles of paint and glue and I was good to go!!!!! They are some of my best memories!!! I still build models, not as fast as I once did. But i have to say much better than I ever did. You are lucky to be able to do what you love. when you do what you love you never work a day in your life. My hat is off to you. May you never work a day in your life!!!!!!!!

*Nostalgia* I built this kit decades ago and this brings back memories. In building mine I omitted the sides of the hood assembly as was frequently seen "back in the day". I also hinged the hood top with *many* brass hinges to look like a "piano hinge". I also utilized the "extra pieces" to turbocharge and aftercool the engine.

Just picked this kit up along with the Tyrone Malone hideout KW. Used the engine and trans from the dump truck in the kw as I'm building it as the truck from the tv show BJ and the bear. Therefore, gonna use the V8 Detroit from the hauler in the dump truck. Love the videos...and I am grateful that someone is reproducing these old kits again.

Nice! I just picked up this mean dirt hauler yesterday from Hobby Lobby for 40% off. I was very fortunate to get the last one they had. I had this kit back in the 70's when it first came out. I got it from a friend in a trade and he had already assembled it, so this is actually my first time building it. Great job, Chris! Thanks for the great tips. Those will come in handy for my build.

Great build and video. One thing that has changed since the model was first released is the hinged hood. On early editions the hood was hinged in the metal so that the side panels of the hood go up to expose the engine. Nice touch. Your weathering was spot on. The thing I did in the dump box was to heat a small metal rod and made small and larger dents on the inside where different size of gravel or rocks would dent the metal over time. I had to restrain myself by not making too many.

Awesome build! I just got this kit FINALLY! Finished it about an hour ago. Didn't use the hood panels, and just an observation, the dash tops on almost all these older trucks, regardless of make, were black. The faces were wood grain body color etc.,but the dash tops were black. I love this kit,the cab mounts are a pain in the butt, otherwise,no real issues. Thanks Guy.

The fact that it's a heated dump lends to it being an asphalt or hot-patch truck. I think it would look good with a glossy brown-black gunk look in the bed. Another way to get a good weathered work truck look is to paint it with flat paint and then buff it with a piece of old T-shirt until you get a semi-gloss finish. The low areas will still be flat but the broad surfaces will be semi-gloss like they're getting polished by work.

Much as with Ertl’s International Payhauler 350 Detroit Diesel Dump Truck kit, and AMT’s Caterpillar D8H Construction Bulldozer kit, I had built this one, too. The front left fender of the cab had an odd bend to it, so I just dry-brushed a bit of steel and hints of rusting over the painted part to suggest the consequence of a modest collision. I also had used Testor’s little, ¼-oz. bottle of generic medium brown enamel paint mixed with bits of baby powder to simulate thick clumps of fresh mud upon the tyres. Ertl round that time also had released a kit of a dump trailer (Tri-Axle Gravel Trailer 1:25th-scale Model Kit (AMT 8628), one of which I had bought, that one could connect to the rear of a dump truck, complete with a fifth wheel arrangement that the tractor would pull.

Fantastic job on a truck which looks like it has the same number of parts as a real truck. I love the explanations and guidance during the sub assembly steps. I think if I built the model, using bass wood for the top of the box and then staining and dirtying it up would give it a more authentic look. EVERYONE does things THEIR way, and that is why watching your vids is awesome! I also love the fact you use Rustoleum. Man, Rustoleum should be a sponsor! Look forward to the next one!

great job! glad you didn't do the "extreme" driven into the ground version! I was able to build one of the original kits back in the "70's and I did it as a dealer delivered new unit. still have it by the way! the loops on the front bumper reminded me of the ones that were on my dad's '52 F-8 Ford- he bought it used and the fog lights had been removed so people used to ask what they were for. dad would tell them he'd tie gunny sacks behind them and go snipe hunting at midnight with them! oh,the "tank thats on the left side of the cabin front of the door is a luberfiner-an add on item developed in California to extend the life of the engine oil! its no longer used and some owners have converted it to a power steering cooler! by the way I retired last year after doing mechanic work for a Ford/Kenworth dealer after 40 yrs.

First let me say thanks for your great videos. They are very inspiring. I came across your Atlantis B-25 build and review few days ago. I have the Revell 1995 reissue of that kit and I am now inspired to build it to display at my office. I built that kit in the mid-60's as a kid, thinking it was very detailed for the time. I have been looking at some of your other builds and have an observationa regarding the Autocar A64B Semi Tractor and Autocar DC9964B Dump Truck builds. I know you said you are not a truck expert, but I thought I would share this. I acquired the dump truck on eBay early in 2017. It appears to be an early issue as the decal sheet is not as nice as your. I got it to a point were I needed to paint the frame and engine and could not decide on colors and weathering. I was attempting to make a "newer" truck that mirrored the new dump trucks purchased by my employer. We purchased 2017 Peterbuilt Super 16 dump trucks. The first truck in our fleet in 1985 were Autocar Mixers. In both builds, you painted the Cummings diesel engine a tan base color and with lots of weathering. I have observed in our shop, that Cummings diesel engine blocks are bright red and do show extreme weathering. In fact when invoiced for an engine rebuild done at Cummings, we are charged for red spray paint for touch-up. I thought you might like to know. One other comment. The amber running lights on the top of the cab are called "Chicken Lights". There is debate on the internet about why, but I think it is because they look like the skin bumps on roosters. Thank you again for your videos. They have inspired me to resume working on the dump truck model. I hope to have it done by the time I retire at the end of 2021. I want to present it to my boss with company logos and his name on the door as "Boss" and our shop manager as "Crew Chief" like military planes of old. And his truck number will be "00". Double Naughts (nuts) as "CAG". PS. I live in Texas, but my parents were from Stevens Point and I still have relatives in the Milwaukee area.

Man you outdid yerself on this one...i actually grew up around these type of trucks. My friends i grew across street from...on our street ther dad owned tom dwyer&sons trucking. He had abt 25 of these giant dump trucks. Flat trailer that hauled a d9 cat too. I grew up around very old autocars...diamond reo's an diamond T's, macks, whites, kenworths&peterbilts. All from 50s to 70s. Bunch of old 60s or early 70s fords too. Few internationals. They used too bust split rims with no cages....it was a cool place to grow up and no doubt played a part in moulding my gear head personality. I need several of these and see if i can figuer out how to recreate ther old company door logo.great job though!!!
