Beautiful video. I've been riding from Van Nuys to Oceanside and back for years, and I know when my usual ride is passing about two miles north of where I live. Sometimes I'll time an evening walk just so that I can be outdoors to hear that K5LA...

My father and I used to chase trains out of San Diego back in the mid 70s to mid 80s. We were there so often they would let us ride through the wye at MCRD and I even got to work the whistle once. They sure have built up around that San Diego Depot. Imagine trying to chase a train up to Del Mar back when the speed limit was 55 mph. We rode in a 1971 RoadRunner with a 340+6. Once we saw a 14 car freight with 2 SD45, an F45, 2 GP30s, an SD40-2 and a GP35 sitting just North of the SD Depot. They must have been in a hurry because they just lit it up and were going at least 50 by the time the caboose came by. Dad looked at me and said "Well, what do ya think?" I said "YEAH!" and we hopped in that RoadRunner. In Del Mar, we heard the horn as we were closing the doors. I wish I could have taken a picture of the guy in the caboose, it was like he'd seen 2 ghosts as we waved at him again. That was almost 40 years ago.

Great horn sound on the Pacific Surfliner between San Diego & Los Angeles. I rode on the Pacific Surfliners between San Diego & Los Angeles 7 times when they were called the San Diegans. My late wife, late daughter & oldest sons very first train ride was on the San Diegan from Los Angeles to San Diego on 8/6/1981 when they arrived from the Philippines. When my late daughter was on her own, she would ride to & from San Luis Obispo during long weekends such at the Memorial Day & Labor Day & Thanksgiving holiday weekend instead of drive, she liked train travel a lot, so does my oldest son, especially when he was on Temporary duty in Japan with the Air Force. I travel long distance by Amtrak & will be riding Amtrak more often between San Diego, Los Angeles & Oxnard in the future.

it’s modified so it can, most normal dash 8s go up to like 80. I always felt like they can go faster but don’t because of restrictions. Amtraks Dash 8s can go up to 100 as well
@F59PHI2 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderfollowsChrist Typically, modern day freight diesels are geared for 70. This includes Dash 9's, Dash 8's, and Gevo's. However, as you said, the P32-8BWH can do 100 mph because it's geared for passenger service.

Is 503 no longer capable of generating HEP? Or does the engineer simply elect to run a Genesis on the rear to provide the HEP (or TEP, whatever you like to call it on the back end) and have full power available to the Dash-8?
@flyaround59538 жыл бұрын
What is HEP still trying to learn the technical terms
@HotForgeChaos8 жыл бұрын
FlyAround5 HEP stands for Head End Power. It uses the main alternator for the traction motors to power the carriages and the like. The catch is the prime mover (diesel engine) must be turning over at a constant RPM to maintain the correct AC frequency (in your case 60Hz), so even when stopped in a station, the prime mover will still be at high RPM. It also lowers the amount of tractive effort the traction motors can produce, as some of the horsepower produced by the prime mover is now powering the carriages as well as the traction motors

@sluce86238 жыл бұрын
ok thanks
@arimabuss8 жыл бұрын
+s Luce In fact GE hasn't changed that much their design since the Dash 8, except for the upper radiator grids. You can also see that a Dash 8 has a single large on each sides in a discreet angle, whereas an ES44 has one thin grid plus two larger grids and more inclined angle on each sides. This is a GEVO... upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a7/BNSF_5947_GE_ES44AC.jpg ... And this is a Dash 8 (and behind her, another ES44). s862.photobucket.com/user/Freightrain79/media/302abCSX7855.jpg.html

@therookie92767 жыл бұрын
Boba Fett No, this was a freight train, but it was modified for passenger service. It only has 3,200 HP, just like GE's C32-8.
@amtrakinoscale98116 жыл бұрын
RiversideRailProductions Not really a whole lot of modification. If it ever needed to be sold, Amtrak could very easily turn it into a freight unit at Beech Grove in very little time. Beech Grove would re-gear the traction motors, rip out the HEP generator, and give it a once-over. They basically would be reversing what GE did at the factory. GE simply installed a HEP generator and re-geared the traction motors of a production Dash 8 32BW. Other Amtrak locomotives would require more work. The F59PHIs could never be re-geared as it wouldn't be worth it. The P40DC and P42DC after getting a complete carbody transplant, re-gearing, and HEP removal could possibly be sold as freight units. GE was very lucky they sold these units when they did, very few 4-axle units are still in service. They simply don't have the tractive effort that 6-axle units do.
