Then #117 pulls the whole train up past the switch and they back #9 down and couple it onto the end of the train? A single P42 is more than capable to pull the train and not only would have such an operation been faster, it also wouldn't have left the passengers without HEP during the switching procedure.

My Dad worked for Fruit Growers for 30 years. They built boxcars A couple of times he told me about men that had been killed by boxcar doors crushing them. My Dad drove a forklift. Fruit Growers was in Alexandria, VA. He started in 1956 at the age of 21. He was still there when the yard closed for good around 1986. As far as I know it has not been re purposed. The original buildings and track are, probably still there. It's been years since I was last in that area of Alexandria. Northern Virginia has a long history of railroading. I grew up in Manassas which started out a railroad junction that was destroyed during the Civil War. First and Second Manassas (Bull Run) took place here. Because of our close proximity to Washington, DC (10 miles), there was heavy fighting throughout Northern VA. There are hundreds of Historical Markers in the region and numerous historic Civil War- era buildings to visit.

@scottfirman5 жыл бұрын
Nope. The control unit, or head unit must be in operational condition to be sure everything is working. By moving it behind , it is no longer the head unit. Think about it, if 9 had its brakes system fail or its dynamic brakes fail, it might be more than just a truck getting plowed into.I am sure they have protocols to follow concerning that.
@ArchTeryx005 жыл бұрын
@@scottfirman I wasn't thinking about keeping 9 in front, I was thinking the better option would be to *leave 9 behind* - run the train out with the remaining engine, park the damaged 9 on a siding for the NTSB, and once they got done with it, send out a road engine to tow it away to an engine shop. Having them *put it back in the train* was something I was *not* expecting.
@lilsuzq325 жыл бұрын
#9 is better *pushed* from behind ... the remaining locomotive can get up enough power to do both that *and* move the rest of the train cars. Here in the Chicago Metra system, locomotives routinely *push* entire commuter trains from behind, with a crew in the upper deck of the front passenger car to keep the locomotive operators on alert via radio, etc.
