I for one would like to see your take on the F59PHI. One of the things that I have enjoyed the most about this series is seeing the differences in how we covered the F40PH and the AEM-7. You often provide a lot more detail in the specifications area than I do. And there are a number of things I left out that you could mention like the Las Vegas Talgo and other demonstration services. Plus I think it would be neat for you to have done the entirety of Amtrak's revenue service fleet. Either way, this has been a great video series and I will be sad to see it end. Great video!

Glad to hear you've enjoyed the series! Your 'Train Talk' series is actually what primarily inspired me to start Engines of Amtrak in the first place. Anyway, thanks for the compliments regarding EoA, it's much appreciated. I've greatly enjoyed your Train Talk series along with the information and amount of footage you have for what you are talking about. Nonetheless, I think EoA had it's good run when I conclude with the HHP-8 and Acela. Thanks again!

It was the painting scene that made Amtrak's p42dcs ugly as well as other Amtrak locomotives and coaches too. Amtrak used to have a very attractive painting scene. Phase 3. Also known as the the red, white, and blue painting scene. Now Amtrak locomotives are painted in gray with a wavy blue on the top, and the coaches are painted gray, a different shade than the locomotive, with a very thin red, white, and blue stripes. They are now less attractive than the phase 3 painting scene. That is what made Amtrak so ugly.

The Genesis locomotives are the most beautiful out of all the Diesel-electric locomotives in the US. As far I have heard that the SC-44s are not replacing all the P42DCs that Amtrak owns. At least not yet. Right now they are only replacing them in certain Mid Western and West coast markets, and the those states DOTs are sharing the cost of buying the Chargers. Amtrak does not currently have the funds to replace their entire fleet and won't anytime soon. The P42DC will solider on for at least another decade.

You don't have to use all caps dude. Anyway they don't care what the units look like, it is function over design. Also the US has very strict crash standards for trains which which is why most North America locomotives have a less aerodynamic front end and the rail cars are more structurally robust. A foreign manufacture has to make very drastic changes to their models to sell in the US, and Canada. That is why the Chargers look vastly different from European locomotives. Yes the Chargers are not ascetically pleasing but if they are reliable and function as designed then the purchasers won't care. It is likely that these will be becoming more common in North America. In addition of being one of the few new passenger locomotives being sold in the US. The others are EMD, and MPI. There are also a few companies that will do complete rebuilds to modern specs of older platforms.

NOW TO THE TASK AT HAND! amtrack has the new ACS64 ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES And they look pretty decent, although i believe, they didn't get GERMANYS BEST! BY THE WAY, I KNOW ALL about that crash worthiness issue. THE GG1'S WERE THE BEST AT THAT! ANYHOW the ACS 64 IS NOT AS ROBUST AS GERMANYS ACS64F! THAT JOKER SET A SPEED RECORD FOR A LOCOMOTIVE AT 224MPH,AT TRIAL RUN! THE UNDERCARRIAGE IS HEAVY ENOUGH TO HOLD THE ROAD AT THAT SPEED! I DARE SAY THAT ITS DEFINITELY MORE CRASH WORTHY THAN THE AMERICAN VERSION. THE GERMAN ACS64F, IF I'M CORRECT, CAN BE SEEN UNDER THE CURIOSITY APP WHICH HAS THE 10 FASTEST RAIL SPEEDOS IN THE WORLD. THE ACS64F OF GERMANY IS THE 1ST ONE SHOWN, IN THAT SEGMENT. THE AEM7'S WHICH ARE STILL RUNNING IN SWEDEN UNDER THEIR ORIGINAL NAME OF BEING RC4'S-RC6'S CAN BURN RUBBER TOO! OF COURSE,WITH STEEL WHEELS. they may be alittle shorter than the ACS64'S BUT THEY CAN DO WELL OVER 125MPH WHEN PRESSED! THEIR SPEEDOMETERS READ 160MPH! sadly, my beloved AEM7'S WERE RETIRED, NEAR THE END OF 2016, AS YOU MAY BE AWARE OF. I CALL THOSE NEW ACS64'S A SHOWHORSE, BECAUSE THEY LOOK TOO SHOWY! THOSE RC4'S SLASH AEM7'S COULD GO TO WAR ON THE RAILS! I SAW IT ON A TRIAL RUN BETWEEN NEW BRUNSWICK AND PRINCETON JUNCTION AND THAT NEEDLE WAS WAS UP WARD'S OF 147MPH. NUFF'SAID! 7/23/18. 8:18PM.

I remember what the late "Railfan and Railroad" Magazine Editor Jim Boyd said of them when he first saw a photo of one: "AMD-103 stands for Armenian Made Diesel - 103 percent ugly". Nothing will ever come close to the streamline era E's, F's and Alco cabs, but I think in retrospect the F40PH was a better looking modern passenger unit. I realize they were fuel hogs when generating full Head-End Power, but it was really impressive watching and hearing one enter a station at full-roar, strobes flashing in the night. One of the major downsides of the GE passenger units, which also plagued the earlier P30CH's was their propensity to suffer engine fires, leading to an entire category of photo albums titled "Crispy Critters". I'm told that the problem was lack of proper maintenance, but the EMD's didn't seem to suffer the same problems with the same level of maintenance.
@caelumvaldovinos53184 жыл бұрын
One of the major issues with GE's locomotives is that the oil lube lines run directly into the turbocharger. If the turbo bearing springs a leak, well, we all know the results. Also, speaking from experience, the engines that GE uses which are 4 stroke with multi fuel injection instead of the common fuel rail tend to be asses when not babied

The Genesis P32AC-DMs were also built to replace aging EMD FL9s that were acquired from the Penn Central in 1978, which were originally purchased by the New Haven Railroad from 1956-1960. The old Amtrak FL9s weren't completely phased out until 1998 and were only kept in service for so long because no other locomotive builder had a third-rail compatible diesel in production until the Genesis series came along. To my knowledge, Metro North actually kept their FL9 fleet in service until late 2009 meaning the locomotives had an over half century-long career, which is crazy for a locomotive.

that is surprising for Amtrak to be using FL9 locomotives right after F40phs and genesis locomotives first started running on Amtrak lines. Amtrak used to have other that were old as the fl9 and older too, such as E7, E8, and E9, but Amtrak retired those locomotives after a few years of service.

The P-40s (along with a bunch of car types) in Beech Grove are up for sale if you're interested. I think bids are closing soon though.

After the P42s were deployed, all P40s were stored for many years until the TIGER stimulus plan rebuilt about 15 P40s to be the equivalent of P42s using surprising minor modifications. These are now used on the Auto Train and some other services.

822 the Phase III heritage unit is the last original P40DC on Amtrak and 809 was an original P40DC in Phase V paint but it was scrapped in 2015.

AmtrakGuy, you should think about doing videos on other passenger locomotives not operated by Amtrak. For example Metro-North M1, M3, M7, and M8s, Septa, NJ Transit, Boston T and other regional railroads locomotives. You are very knowledgeable and I’d love to see more videos like this after you finish all Amtrak locomotives.

The Amtrak Genesis locomotives are on of my favorite Amtrak engines I've know for a long time. There like the EMD F40PH's of modern time. In regards to the Siemens chargers I actually like them comparing them to the tear 4 Locomotives on metrolink ( California) They actually look really good. They were mainly designed to take over intercity trains. The Genesis engines are still used on long distance trains. Some have heard that Siemens is building a long distance Charger locomotive at some point but for now the and track Genesis engines are still the beautiful face of Amtrak.

Not related to the GE Genesis, but my U.S. history teacher was on the train at 8:43 (He worked for the Santa Fe and Amtrak before he became a University teacher), and get this, Rosa Parks was also onboard the train. My teacher also told my class that at one point, he had the option of meeting either Rosa Parks or Bill Clinton, and he chose to meet Rosa Parks.

The Michigan line from Porter IN, to Kalamazoo Is rated for 110mph. MDOT purchased the rest of the route to Dearborn so hopefully soon trains will be able to do 110 from Porter to Dearborn. The South of the Lake project should decrease travel times significantly as well.

Note: The Chargers are now in revenue service on the NorCal CalTrans routes, the Capitol Corridor and the San Joaquins (interestingly, one of these two routes' termini is here in Sacramento, where the SC-44, SCB-40 (model for Brightline, along with its rollingstock), and ACS-64 locos are built). That started back in November of last year. They're now being tested in SoCal on the Surfliners. These SC-44s feature an aerodynamic shell modification unique to California with a spoiler for the bi-level cars (future cars will be single-level owing to supply-chain problems with a newer design of bi-level cars).

Hello Amtrakguy365. I know that u said that you would not do videos on the early Amtrak engines. I don't understand why other than you said someone else did it. Well I believe that if Amtrak is ur favorite railroad then you should all of them. Maybe cars included. Amtrak is my number two (Rio Grande is my first sorry) I have HO scale trains,, Amtrak included. I'm also running DCC with sound and I use ur videos to get the right sounds for realism effects. Especially the horns sounds. I really like and look forward to seeing, and hearing with what you come up with. I know you said that someone else did some but I subscribed to u and I like the details u put in to it. I hope to see more Amtrak videos soon. Enjoy and take care.

As someone who's a fan of the F40PH, it 100% bummed me to see the veterans of Amtrak being replaced with a GE product that, IMHO, isn't my favorite looking locomotive ever.

After that accident in 1993, Amtrak now requires passengers over the age of 18 to have some form of ID with. This allows Amtrak to easily account all passenger in a major train accident.
