LED headlamps have gotten tiny and lightweight. Some models have rechargeable batteries and will run all day. Charge them overnight. Look them up at hiking websites. They are not expensive. I love mine for hiking and for the campsite/tent at night. I also use one when I am working on the cars in the garage. They are awesome when working in engine bays.

We’ve hade our boiler mate for 18-19 years . Happy till last week, getting sporadic hot water. Same issue with clicking on smart control . Only about 10 hours before a nor’easter hit and having to report for plowing during a snow storm , I was able to find and pick up part but ran out of time on install . With no time to work on it we Boiled water to fill tub for a week . Tonight I’m happy to be sitting here after having a nice long hot shower . Thanks again for sharing knowledge Brother !

I have the same unit (Installed it in 2005) with a little newer design controller on it than the one that failed here. Anyway, my controller flaked out too after 8 years of use - the display was flickering and displaying gibberish. Was just about to drop $210 (at the time - 2013) on a new one when I noticed a comment right on their site from an electrical engineer - he described step by step how to repair this particular failure. Long story short, I copied and printed his comment, removed the smart board, and went to work. Had to de-solder 6 pins from a relay on the board, and solder in 2 jumpers in the 4 specific openings. Fixed!! This relay changed the controller from 24v, 220v, or 120v power inputs, and it would fail on 220v (explained the flickering), if I'm remembering that right. The jumpers bypassed the relay, keeping the input set to 120v. Still working right now (knocks on wood, lol)!
@jamesortolano39833 жыл бұрын
I think they are the best indirect's. Never had any problems with the ones I put in. Nice to see someone else changing the module. Could not see how they tied 3 zones into relay board, on one terminal. My guess is single zone relays feeding end switch on TACO board,with 1 pump divided by 3?? Any how ,appreciate your video Steve.!!! In the middle now Heat nd air. Not to busy,gonna try nd get a cut in on this old place that had no air. Wish I had those Burnham base board radiators!! New I've got to pay almost 40.00 a linear foot. Don't understand why people take them out??? See you tomorrow. Thankyou so much for all you do!!

Usually the capacitor intern the controller is bad. It provides the low voltage for the controller and the relays. That why the controller reset its self every time it tries to start the boiler. the relays pulls to much power for the bad cap. Greetings from Holland
@williegillie57123 жыл бұрын
Interesting makes sense. With a bad cap it’s not able to start.
@theoldbigmoose3 жыл бұрын
Spot on. The main failure mode in white goods is the 5 volt rail filter capacitor and inadequate protection for near lightning strikes. Both are relatively easily solved. For long life (20 years plus) you need to grossly over rate the filter caps. As electrolytics get hot they loose electrolyte, then loose capacitance and internal ESR goes up, that drives them hotter. It's a viscous cycle to control the ripple on the voltage rail. The key gains are to grossly overrate the voltage of the cap. For example use a 50V rated cap on a 5V rail, and to go for the higher Temp rating, for example choose 135 degC rated caps over 85 degC, and then choose lower ESR. Lightning strikes are covered with board level MOVs on the line and snubbing diodes. I also recommend whole house transient suppression modules.
@SmittySmithsonite3 жыл бұрын
My controller is a little newer design, and the failure with mine is the relay that switches between different power inputs - 24v, 120v, and 220v if I remember right. When it fails, it defaults to 220v, which makes it wig out with only 120v coming in. I was able to desolder the relay and install 2 jumpers following instructions from an electrical engineer's comment online - been working great since 2013! I owe that guy a half barrel of beer, whoever he is.

Wow. Zone 1 is all three heating valves and zone 2 is the domestic HW controller. Just a little bit overly complicated for my liking. If it were mine I’d have replaced that crap HW controller with a simple dry contact aquastat wired to the zone 2 TT and picked up the HW circulator on the unused zone 2 pump contacts in the Taco zone controller. That would get it back up and running with a future project to replace the 2 zone controller with a 4 zone. I love it when Steve has to figure out someone’s Rube Goldberg and get it working again. 🤣

Also don`t expand your customer base faster than you can serve them. You could become a victim of your own success. Monitor carefully what people say about you online. Word of mouth is the best advertisement. Proceed with caution and make mid-course corrections, as you go. You cannot please everybody, be prepared for that. Good luck!
