I know a lot of content creators that feel this way. The beautiful thing about not having a large audience is that you feel more free to do what you want, but when you have thousands, hundreds, or even dozens of followers that appreciate one thing you do, you don't want to let them down. I really feel that trap, myself, and I'm trying to get out of it. I don't want to have all of my eggs in one basket, especially when it's not my main passion. I want to use my content to grow and move on to bigger and better things, and it's very intimidating to change when so many people view what you're doing. And while a lot of viewers may not see the creator first before there content, I know there are plenty of understanding individuals that respect a content creator's passion. Some people don't even care what type of content you put out, as long as you're working on something. It's especially hard to change something when your work is succeeding, because it can be scary that you might lose the audience you have. My guess for the best situation would be to try and make the change as gradual as possible, so nobody gets overwhelmed, but a progession is still being made. Tommy for example, could change a spot of time he normally spends on videos to work on his writing. Then perhaps a little more in the future, once he feels comfortable with the change. It isn't easy, but following your passions is very important.

As for the surprisingly large amount of people who have suggested doing an audio drama. Funny you should mention that. Stay tuned...

Randy Savage Well, as far as my knowledge about him goes, I don't believe he's gay. Even so, you shouldn't use that word to describe anyone. It's very rude.

Randy Savage That's not really what a meant. I meant it's rude towards a certain group of people and their sexuality. Guess I should have specified. Anyway, I'm not gonna keep you from insulting him (even though I don't think he deserves it all that much), I'm going to go to bed... probably... maybe...

I love the designs of both yours and Tommy's OCs, Dr.Wolf. To Tommy, I don't see you solely as a writer or a reviewer...but as an artist, overall. Artists are capable of doing a multitude of creative outlets. Whether it's making reviews, drawing or writing. That is what I love most about guys like you, Dr.Wolf and countless other artists within the MLP community. You're able to reach millions of people with your creativity and insight in ways that really have a great impact on them. With that; I leave you with this, Mr.Oliver. Keep doing what you love, no matter what path you chose. If it makes both your supporters and yourself happy, that's what really matters

The way that Tommy talks about how working on another creative project that, while it does require creative contribution, is not what you truly want to work on but that it still drains you reminds me of the way I am now in my graphic and web design program. I've spoken to a couple of my classmates and we are both experiencing the same thing. We thought that this would help us express ourselves creatively and inspire us to make lots of creative side projects but we are so preoccupied with the projects that we have to do for school that the number of personal projects that we used to do before we entered college have all come to a screeching halt and that trying to start to start new ones, or even just to get a spark going can be so mentally taxing. That's why it kind of annoys, and worries, me when some of the teachers have spoken about students in their last year of the program looking back on their portfolio of all the past works they've submitted and finding that it sucks while knowing that they can do better. I can only hope that this is just a first-year slump for me and that i'll eventually be able to find my pacing. :/

That...was incredibly heartfelt. Don't give up on your dreams, Tommy! I'd love to hear your stories. They might help me become a writer...'cause I suck at writing. (Although I *am* good at structuring stories and coming up with ideas for stories.) I'm sure--no, POSITIVE that almost all of your subscribers would love to hear your stories, too. They came for the analysis, but they'll stay for the Tommy, because by now you've made us all a little brony-curious. :)

I definitely can agree with Dr Wolf, as someone that is studying to make it in the world of business and pushing myself to be the best I can be. I find it very difficult to bring out my creative side and work on my costumes or on my character for a upcoming presentation or play. But definitely pushing yourself makes you see the joy that your hobbies bring you. Don't forget that we believe in you and we know that you can do it if you set your mind to it.

Wow, Doc, you even got Digi to visit you this time. =) And I can sympathise with Tommy. I haven't drawn anything win weeks, months even. Even tho I still have so many wild ideas and brainstorming that I want to put on paper, I just can't do it. I just can't force myself to grab a pencil. It's like this feeling that no matter how hard I try my work will be meaningless in the long run, especially after seeing works of other who have been doing it for far longer or at even earlier age than me and the knowledge that it took them years to become experts completely demotivates me. =(

Perhaps you should try not thinking too much about how much work it's going to take to get really good at drawing, and rather just do it for fun. I have found that taking one step at a time, and not looking too far ahead in time too often makes me more motivated to do things. It sound like your biggest problem is getting started, and in that case I know a method that might work for you: You just use a timer and set it to a relatively short amount of time, for example 20 minutes. Then you just start drawing, and continue drawing until the alarm on the timer rings. When that happens you can choose to continue drawing, or you can stop, but you have to do it for at least 20 minutes. I hope this is helpful, and if not, I hope you find another solution to your problem.

I'm becoming more and more attached to this art style with it's references and visual stimuli(/stimulus?) Tommy, good luck on your journey pursuing your interests. I've found you to be just as inspiring as Dr Wolf here largely due to your attitude. When you make videos, you've focused on making a point and explaining it fairly with cons and all. Your videos don't sound like arguments but discussion; open and inviting. Keep that good attitude good sir.

In this video is a pretty complex problem with without a simple answer, and rather than giving him an answer, you gave him ideas and something to work towards as well as think about. Awesome always Doc :) I think anybody who's done art of some type has run into burnout or something similar, and kind of felt lost or torn as a result. My old creative writing teacher told me to give what I was doing a break, and find new inspiration. Sometimes it's not that simple, but trying new things gives us more opportunity for new discoveries. I wish for the best for Tommy; he does awesome vids :)

0_0 Wow. Dr. Wolf, You've just given me chills. Allow me to elaborate. You see finding out that you work as an accountant and manage to produce such quality content was shocking because I am also an accountant. (A recent grad who is at the moment between jobs but an accountant nonetheless) Hearing this part of your past has, for me, established a sense of kinship. I now find you more than ever to be an inspiration and a role model for the kind of person I want to be. I'm going to work harder than ever at my own creative pursuits. I hope that one day soon to share my work with you and all who would read it. Thank you again, Dr. Wolf, and Tommy Oliver as well. This video and the message within have come to me at just the time when I needed it most. Thank you.

tommy i have been a fan of you work for quite some time and i believe the reason your so good at analysis it's because your a grate writer. your skills in the field of story telling help you see the flaws in writing, and i believe that analysis could help your writing skills improve as well since you would have a grater understanding of the elements that make a story grate or bring about its ruin. so please never stop doing ether, with all the work you do you will only get several times better at both your crafts.

I can relate to Tommy a lot. I work everyday as a writer, editor, publisher, etc. Yet, my primary function in life (of this day) is a full time college student...so the way people identify me isn't quite the same as I identify myself. I went through something similar, where I tried to decide whether /I/ was truly defined by what the public sees me. In the end, I have come to the conclusion that though people may be important, their views don't necessarily define your identity. They simply don't know the you that you are to identify you as who you identify yourself to be.

Thanks Doc. My primary passion is to be a youth pastor and counselor. (Surprisingly, being a brony as well hasn't hindered that outreach in any way, only made it stronger.) Even then being a minister doesn't pay the bills. I still need a 40 hour a week job just so I can have income. So recently, when I got a job as a call center worker, a fun job even though it is not very glamorous sometimes, it makes the weekly pay, but I sometimes find it hard to work 8 hours a day, come home, and have to put my mind to thinking about my primary passion, instead wanting to unwind from a day that, one more than one occasion, has been taxing. Keep pushing on to what is important is what I needed to hear. Sometimes I lose sight of why my job is important, but now I see that I need to set my priorities so that I can restore my drive. I cannot allow burn out on this job, especially considering that it is what is providing my means of making it from week to week. Even then, I cannot allow myself to lose sight of my primary goals. I just need to strive so that I can be what I bill myself as. Thank you again.

You know, I wouldn't have understood this a couple months ago, but I think I can kinda relate to the issue a bit more now. I graduated last June with no cemented plans for the future. I've always enjoyed cooking and over the summer I found myself doing more and more cooking since I was the person who was at home the most. Eventually, my family started taking note of my cooking skills, and a couple of jokes about me becoming a professional cook turned into my mother taking me to the closest technical college to sign up for their professional baking program, which I should be getting into this winter quarter. I enjoy baking, but like Tommy, my passion is story-telling. I've wanted to be a published author since I was eight, and that's never changed. Sometimes, I'm afraid that this deal with baking is going to overtake my life and become my identity, because in my mind, I feel locked into following this path through to the end. I suppose my definition of a writer is a bit more open-minded, than Tommy's though. I'd that a writer is somebody who has the interest, passion and drive to pursue the task of writing. I'mstill in the early stages. I don't know a lot, and I've got so much yet to learn. One day, I'll be a published novelist, but that doesn't mean I'm not one now. I'm just not accomplished yet. It's a lot like having earned your cutie mark but not having the time behind it to be truly succesful with it yet. As an example, Rainbow Dash is a racer, even though she doesn't compete in races that often.

Wow... this video brought up some sobering thoughts. I watched this and through the entire thing I felt so lazy. I'm slightly aware of what it takes to give out media, but there's only an extent to what the inexperienced can truly grasp. There are times when I feel conflicted with myself, kind of uncomfortable watching these youtubers, It inspires me to want to be somebody, pic up a mic and make some videos... but then the procrastination sets in. So does the laziness. Every time this happens I get depressed.... and if I delved into it I could probably find that this all runs full circle, because when I feel depressed, what do I do? I watch a youtube video, or read a glorious story. I've given it a lot of thought, and to be honest I don't think I've ever been so disappointed in something than I am in myself. When I was little, was this what I was destined to be? Some anonymous comment on a blogging website. Would my old self even be able to look me in the eye if they were to some how meet me? ......It's pretty pitiful. :/ Doc, Tom, I don't know what your going through, I really don't, but... would it be too much to ask for you to keep trucking through? Make more videos... maybe I can figure myself out if I keep watching you.... or maybe I'm trying to justify myself falling back into the loop. I confused myself....

This is an issue I sadly don't have much experience with or input on. I'd love to help, but the most I can relate to is that I have to balance school (which I hate) with a half dozen other things on top of trying to get my channel to take off. It's kinda hard to make a video when you've got the ACT's tomorrow morning, but at the same time, when I edit a video or write a script, I'm absolutely loving what I'm doing. Being stuck in the position where I feel obligated to do something I'm not too passionate about hasn't really been something I've had to deal with so I'm sorry to Tommy that I can't be much help.

This is very interesting actually, because honestly, I can relate to Tommy here in more ways then one. When I first set out on my merry way on the internet, I had dreams to become a cartoonist. TO draw comics and stories and just get better at art. And for a long time thats what I did. I actually became a little well known in the Sonic fandom (not super well known mind you, but I did make a bit of a name for myself as an artist) and was improving my art skills a ton. When I became a brony, I felt a huge spark ignite in me to try also pursuing another passion of mine, being singing and songwriting. I had never tapped int that before in my life, and when I uploaded my first song, and it suddenly got spotlighted on EQD, I suddenly had a whole new thing I was known for. Since then I've been doing a to of music, and I love every second of it~ I've never grown tired of singing and writing lyrics and stuff, but I have noticed that my original love, making art, has begun to get pushed into the background. I still do it yes, but its no longer what I'm known for doing, and when I left the sonic fandom, I seemed to loose almost all of that following who enjoyed my art before ponies to begin with. I have been hoping to change that recently by getting my art out there a little more. I've been drawing a lot of cover art for 4EverfreeBrony, starting a Tumblr, an Ask Blog, and finally going out to meet other brony artists like my good friend AnticularPony, since before then I had never been able to meet any other brony artists, despite art being my biggest love. Things have been starting to improve a little, in that I feel more drive to keep working on my art cause more people have begun to care about my art again, But only time will tell if I'll be able to expand upon it in the way I actually envisioned it (being a comic artist and such~). On that note, I want to say that I do actually look up to you Tommy Oliver as an artist~ I love your art, stories, and respect the fact that you are able to on top of it all run such a popular KZbin channel. So I hope you end up finding more time to keep pursuing your dream, and I look forward to seeing where it takes you ^_^

Also, l on the note of 'mid-life crisis in your 20's'. ... I had a similar thing with my IT passion last year. I had lost all motivation in something I use to spend hours researching, tinkering, playing, building, etc. Why? Because it became my job. It was a drain on all aspects of life and continue to be so to this day. But by identifying the issue and talking about it, I've been ale to better manage how I feel about life. The issue is with turning a hobby or passion into a job is you loose control, which leads to the thing you identify with as being taken by others. Or, in your case I gather, the thing people (Us, the audience) have taken control over is crashing through your passion for your craft. This, I'd imagine, is worse. Hang in there. You are a clever guy Tommy, and you are in a circle of people, like Dr Wolf, who can help see you through the rough days.

This one really hit home for me. I've always wanted to do something where my talent for speaking, teaching, or writing would play the largest part in my personal and professional career. However my talent with a computer is what has largely dominated all my career paths. Most often this leaves me alone keying in data, e-mailing data, manipulating data, etc. while those who were my colleagues get to go on and do what I want more than anything else in this world. This being the chance to use my speaking skills to teach, help, and show I'm more than a "Man in the Box" so-to-say. Learning you are an Accountant impresses me. Numbers were never my strong point. Though that is my own fault for being stubborn and not seeking help when I was unable to muddle my way through more taxiing mathematics in which seeing the notes on the board would've helped. (I didn't ever have true note takers until I was in Graduate school. Interestingly enough the one I did have took the wrong notes and I almost failed out of Statistics 3) I've always admired those on the Accounting side of business. It's a lot of patience. Especially if you are dealing with Balance Sheets and the sort. I learned equations and various techniques for doing accounting but none are easy. So my compliments to you for not only being an Accountant but doing well with it as a current career.

Would you say you have a goal you are trying to reach within your particular organization? Or that you may see a career path in which lines up with your accounting and other skills in which you'd like to branch into? The position I phantom hold right now was one where I was told I'd advance to the next level if I went above and beyond my goals in 2013. It didn't hurt how we had someone in our department of that position who left the company clearing space for me to have the position. It would've put me in a position where I'd likely be able to interact more directly with end users. I would've relished it. But 2014 dashed all that amidst a flurry of what amounted to "Be happy in your place". I hope you can press through all the frustration, false promises, and office politics so you can forever be the best you can be. It's not always easy and I paid dearly for trying to be more than a "Diversity Token". The advice you have shared here shows you are aware of how to pick and choose your battles while coping with what may otherwise seem unfair within the professional world. Keep up the good work on your end and know you have helped me and others for our next attempts at making a living.

Matthew Palumbo I used to believe that working towards getting an MBA would show the higher ups that I am determined to climb the corporate ladder and increase the value I can add to the company. But it really seems that the higher ups are only interested in using me for what I'm already doing, and don't really want me for anything else within the company. I am very good at what I do, and not so easily replaced. But I learned a while ago that getting an MBA wouldn't really change anything at the job I have.
@matthewpalumbo3934
@matthewpalumbo3934 10 жыл бұрын
So you, too, have learned the "Dark Side" of business. This being the whole "It's not what you know but who you know" in which tends to lead to forward progression. There's also awful elements of what can no better be described than "Schoolyard Politics" where those people tend to "Like" get more favorable treatment and opportunities than those who are less liked. Even if these lesser liked individuals do amazing work the "Office Politics" keep them in their so-called "Place" in which can lead to frustration, stagnation, or doubt in your abilities. An MBA is a wonderful degree to have. I learned a lot through the experience but it honestly hasn't done much for me beyond making me more respective to the world around me. Particularly those in diversity since many international students are part of MBA programs. The team's I'd be on were amazing! You're trademark "It's good to be helping" may apply well at your current position. You know you are doing a good job. Even if, like Spike, you are seldom appreciated or recognized for your efforts you know yourself you put forth your best each day and your efforts are appreciated if not explicitly shown. As my therapists have pointed out, along with friends and family, "You need a job where they need you more than you need them". Or "You need a job where people genuinely like you and what to include you". A lot of companies have seemingly gone to a "Mount Olympus" approach. The Directors and Executives will issue orders and expectations without ever taking much time to see how it impacts those who do the day-to-day operations that forward the organization. Part of my job was trying to make sense out of ever changing directives that were often difficult for a department like mine to meet since we were highly fragmented with being responsible for the upkeep of over 10 intranet applications with a team of no more than 25. This included Developers, Analysts, and Leads. I found if you can create a "Happy Space" around your work area that it helps with dealing with an occasional feeling of "Where am I going?" There's also listening to music. That's a major help particularly on tedious jobs.

Hey DRWolf. I was wondering if you will at some point consider doing these AMWDW segments with KZbin users of other media. Like game reviewers and Let's Players. Ones that come to mind are SomeCallMeJohnny and The Great Clement. It's really fine if you can't. These videos are really inspirational. I also just wanted to say. Thanks for all the great content you create for all of us. I can't imagine how much work it must be to have a full time job, yet still be able to get videos out every week or so. I really appreciate all that you have done for the Brony Community.

A while back I read one of Tom's posts on his Tumblr. It went something along the lines of "What are we doing???" This was in reference to the over-analysis of the show and refreshing realization that, maybe, sometimes, all the community was doing was making problems where there were none. Tom said something along the lines of, "We're making cynics out of our audience and just pissing off everyone else." For me, that Tumblr post spoke volumes about what Tom was going through, and it really made me think about the landscape of criticism, not just in the MLP fandom, but in the internet as a whole. I'm gonna be upfront here. I don't think Tom is a good critic, and I don't gain anything by watching his content. It just isn't for me, and that goes doubly so for some of his friends like Digi and Antony. That's just me, opinions and all that. Reading that post and having a cursory knowledge of Tom's situation made me realize that he probably wasn't enjoying this as much as he could be enjoying something else. Now, watching this video it has become abundantly clear. During season 4 I got the sense that Tom was tired, from the few videos that I watched. He just wasn't as interested in making videos as he was. Something was missing, and it could seen in his work. I felt bad for him. "Anyone can critique, but not everyone can create." " In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgement. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. *But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so.*" - Anton Ego. You're not a critic, Tom. You are a creator. An artist, a writer, with a clear love for each respective craft. Having an audience that you don't want to toss away is admirable. Having a respect for them and caring is something that is respectable. I won't presume to tell you what you should do. That's for you to decide. But whatever happens I respect you, Tom. I know how it can feel to not exercise a creative drive when you want to. Do what makes you happy, and I wish you all the best.

I can sort of identify with where Tommy's coming from. Even if you have something you love doing, sometimes it can be hard to feel motivated or excited about doing it and it may just start to feel like more work. I'll try to think about what Dr. Wolf said here and maybe try to apply it to my own life.

Don't feel bad Tommy. I've been a cook with the Canadian Forces these past 3 years; and it has succeeded only in draining the love from my passion, and convincing me I need to take another path in life. I'm not even certain of what I'll be doing next... I understand creative burnout, and not getting enough time to do what you want to...; But, You've shown yourself to have many talents, that a lot of people enjoy! So you have options! All I can say is do some deep soul searching (NEVER an easy process) and try to decide what's right for you!

well, two reasons. On, I though a name like 'Autistic Pony' would stand out among the hundred's of new wannbe's analyst, and fit well with how I wanted to analyze the show, and other things I have planed. Also, I'm hopping that when I come out to my parents that being open with my autisms will help my case.

I remember when DigiBro had a similar issue, he just wanted to deconstruct and analyze media, but was finding himself just giving reviews and critique on episodes of one show week after week, which people put way more weight in than he liked. So what he did is he decided to change up his format and approach the episodes with a completely different style, and he later went to what he really wanted by analyzing various different shows. He gave his audience something different and hoped they could appreciate that as well. If people are fickle enough to leave as soon as they stop getting exactly what they thought they wanted (even if they are getting something arguably better in exchange), they're probably not the kinds of people you should be striving to please anyway. You could change your format to more resemble what you wanted without having to be as drastic as Digi. For example, you could look at stories you didn't like as much as you felt you could have and "retell" it, but a different version, one with all the changes your inner Storyteller thinks it would be better for. Lots of artists re-adapt pre-existing stories, but more attuned to their own personal style of what they want a story to be. Or you could just give your audience original works that are comparable to MLPFiM, the work that gave you your audience in the first place by talking about (because your audience liked it and tangentially how you approached it) to ease the transition to when you eventually present less comparable original works, whatever floats your boat more.

Have you considered creating audio dramas of your fimfics? Or a video series about HOW you crafted them would be intriguing. What aspects from the show did you learn that you put into your work? I'd like to say that "What You Mean to Me" is perhaps one of my favorite stories on FiMFiction; Tommy, you already have the talent for writing, but the greatest attention is on your KZbin. Why, then, must there be a conflict? Use KZbin and the fanbase you've established to revive the old 'radio drama,' much like Ink Rose has attempted to do, or other creative output rather than critiques. Just my two bits.

Dear Tommy Oliver I've been a fan of yours for a while. I'm not surprised that you wish to be a writer you seem like the creative type. But do you remember the Curie Mark Crisaders. Those mechevious 3 fillies who go above and beyond to find their talent? I don't think it's a secret to say that they each have a special talent something they do best. Yet they "feel" like they need to do something else. They have yet to accept their true calling.

Just because a person or even a community sees you as just one thing, doesn't mean that it's the dominate aspect about you. Here on KZbin, we all see the film-makers, critics, and actors that a person is. But we forget that it's only one face that we see when that one person has several more. Both Tommy and Dr. Wolf are seen as legendary MLP annalists on KZbin, but like just now admitted... They have other faces - a writer and an accountant respectively. Just because They have a ton of recognition for one face, doesn't mean that's all they are. But coo-dos to ones that are living the dream. Personally, I know how drained on creative work one can get if its all you ever do. It's why we need things like hobbies or a day job. Being one face constantly 24/7 is exhausting, even if it make you happy or gets recognition. Other faces give you time to replenish the lost energy need for another. Everyone is more then what they show, its' what make us as people interesting and likeable.

Most editors are failed writers. But so are most writers. T. S. Eliot. I guess critiquing is a form of editing (or editing begins with critiquing). But i think you've also formed a sort of narrative with your character (both the blue pony and you as a person). I feel like I've become familiar with its personality, motivations, and understand a but of its motivation on certain key issues.

Well my advice to Tommy would be that he definitely shouldn't forse himself to write, but he shouldn't do nothing either. But I must ask him questions, What was your response to this whole time to your ability to write has been drain? (Not just emotionally) Have you been trying to ignite the spark that gave you a passion for writing, how so? Final question, why haven't tried making a reading on your channel in general?

I can relate to Tommy's issue to an extent. I have always had some dips in my drive to write stories, especially my big fantasy project, the issue mostly being but not limited to being perfectionist (can write straight for long periods of time without stopping to correct things), having a often a hard time at focusing on it (according to my writing mentors, my mind and my thoughts run a little too fast for the rest of the body to catch up and let them "flow" onto the paper and all my attempts to train myself to slowing down my mind don't work at all (f***k you autism!)), lack of self confidence and a having occasionally losing heart because I have no idea where the story is going or how to get the story to where I need it to go (this is especially so for the fantasy epic, which at this point barely at 20 pages of the actual story and most of the content I have made for it is world building fluff and "author's notes" (my best attempts of trying to map out the story, to give myself a clearer path to follow and avoid creating inconsistencies)). Still despite all these issues and more, my love for stories, writing and making people happy by sharing a good story with them always keeps bringing me back. And though I struggle with trying to get the fantasy epic off the ground, I still love it's world and it's characters and will never actually get tired or sick of writing. I may have no faith in my quality as a writer (at least with stories. Poetry is easier for me, though not my passion) and I don't think I will ever be famous for it, but I will still keep on doing it until the bitter or sweet end. Sorry for the length and rambling nature of it.

usp211816 Certainly sounds like a better system then mine. Mine is more general background info about the world and characters in it. I should probably start writing more of a plot summery down or at least try to I got hit recently by a mental wave of both new ideas and reconsidering older ones for the story . . .again, so got to sort that out (god my mind is a mess), but I will soldier on. Good luck with writing your story.
