Amy Grant made many music videos over the years, but this one is her first. In this music documentary, Amy is introduced to the world. It's 1980. And while she's a rising star in Christian music, her biggest albums (Age to Age, Lead Me On, Unguarded, Heart in Motion) are still two years away. This is Amy "in the beginning." Running Time: 37:50

When I watch these early days of Amy’s career I wonder how much of her focus on those deeply reverent songs still resonate with her? She made such an abrupt change of style in 1985 and would never return to that angelic, pre-Gary Chapman girl. Amy is one person I’d love to hang out with for an afternoon just to get to the bottom of her heart on some things. Her artistry improved immensely with her pain and upheaval with Gary and then with Vince. I never really related to the young church girl Amy but sure did the Lead Me On woman.

Her style changed when she finally decided to go "all in" with music. Up until her third album, she was doing that and going to college but when she found she could not do both BUT she was still under contract, she decided to go all in with her music and dropped out of college (she would decades later, get her degree at the urging of her sister) . At that point, CCM was taking a dramatic turn and artists like Twila Paris, Amy Grant and others also made the change from a folksy kind of sound to a more layered, lush and synth base sound. I think it's very telling that this was also the time Amy was introduced to Michael W. Smith and was influenced by DeGarmo and Key. She had also began collaborating with other artists (such as Michael Card.. who would pen her "El Shaddai" song... Randy Stonehill, etc.) and provided background vocals for other xian artists (a sign she was really "all in" with her music and she was constantly working with others, etc.)and that influenced her styling. She began to really hone her craft and her stage presence. She had to go to the next level. By the mid 80s and with "Straight Ahead" and the Christmas album, her sound moved toward more mainstream. Many, many people crucify her for "Unguarded" BUT her record company at the time (A&M) really pushed her for a more rock sound (but she was also in that genre). And they were trying to find a pop replacement as Janet Jackson had left that label. This forced Amy out of her box and she got to work with a number of musicians and writers. This album marked a turning point and kind of echoed the real Amy Grant and it was here that we saw inklings of her true songwriting abilities. And yes, Lead Me On saw her at her collaborative best and some of the songs were kind of real. My fav was "Heart in Motion". While the younger me loved the "churchy" Amy Grant.. when I lived in Israel for a year, I kind of outgrew that real fast and in fact I liked her more secular stuff as Ofra Haza became my favorite artist, especially her own Shadday (Shaddai) album/song, with the title track and "Im Nin Alu".

My favorite Amy music is 1977-1983 + Behind the Eyes/Hymns of Faith. Don’t much like the years inbetween.

Another shocker for me as well. She always says she doesn’t play guitar well.. but she plays just fine. I had never seen her play piano either but maybe it’s because of Michael W. Smith..?

Such a joy to hear the story of the development of such a talented artist. She had such an engaging and confident stage presence even in these earliest years. And I had never seen her mother before - what a likeness between the two. Thank you Amy for so many great songs.

Here's the thing. I'm tired of people bashing on Amy. She has been my friend for over 40 years. I have NEVER heard about her getting a nose job. If you don't like her SHUT UP and don't watch or listen.
@lopear111

@@rennejenkins2071 Why do you thinking stating that she’s had a nose job is bashing on her? You dont need to HEAR anything. LOOK with your eyes. You can clearly see if you compare her nose this video to photos/videos of her after 1985, that she had her nose fixed. Amy’s own MOTHER said Amy had a big nose in some interview I saw decades ago. Stating the truth doesnt mean I dont like her. I said NOTHING mean, like..”Ew gross! She’s soooo uglyyyy with her giant nose!” No. That’s how YOU interpreted my comment. I merely stated a FACT. Sorry if the truth hurts. Not to menture..Amy is a celebrity & not everyone worships the same celebrities you do. Maybe it’s YOU who should stay off the internet or stop watching Amy Grant videos if you cant handle reading anything negative about her.

Oh my. I’d love to hear how she managed all the fame after this. She’s seen so much change in the industry and her own public personal struggles -can’t imagine what she’s been through. Clearly, the woman has faith! More than I’d fathom having.
