Kitchen makeover made easy (and affordable) with Amy Howard Chalk Paint and Dark Wax. The whole process took about 72 hours total, including cleaning, painting, drying, distressing and buffing.
Paint and wax info:
The brand is Amy Howard, and I purchased it a local store called Petals and Vine in McKinney. I used the clear wax, the dark wax and the chalk paint in Bauhaus Buff.

So glad I found this! This is exactly the look I want! Usually I have to watch dozens of youtube videos for ideas and kind of combine tips/methods from various ones to get the result I'm looking for. But for my kitchen cabinet project this is the end of my search!! Clear, concise language that gives you all the info you need and not sprinkled with non-sensical, useless chatter. Good videography! Well done!! Subscribing to your channel today!

Thank you for introducing me to the waxing process. I just finished painting our oak cabinets in 'white dove' by BM paints. I used an extremly conservative amount of their acrylic glaze (choc) for pinstriping the crevices only. Although it is a very nice 'conservative' look I do want the more tea stained color. I am so happy I listened to that little voice that told me to hold off for a couple of days and search for other less 'messy' methods that didn't require me to have to use smelly mineral spirits on a rag to wipe off excess as it would take off the sheen of the freshly painted cabinets also. It certainly pays to not rush and to do your research for other methods that just might be even easier and more beneficial. Thank you for the epiphany moment Nicole!

Thanks so much for making your video available, love your process , this is exactly what I want to do with my old Oak Cabinets, We are remolding our home one room at a time, Kitchen will be next held off on this because I was not sure what I wanted to do. We are doing it yourselfers, upgrading to a Spanish Colonial , the Range Hood will be a plastered look which will be this creamy distressed look. I would paint the kitchen chairs in a medium to dark grey with a distress wax as well to harmonize the look. I know that it exist some varnish specially made to put on top of wax so you get an extra protection (for kitchen, bathroom etc) and that makes it easy to clean. Thank you for sharing Nicole, and au revoir from France !

I tell you what: most of us in the UK would love a kitchen the size you have.......in its original state!! Lucky Girl. Been looking around a few homes during our house-buying process. Seen some fantastic examples of how to ruin a decent kitchen by hand-painting it yourself!! I'd give it a go myself, on the understanding that if I really F'd up, I'd have to cough up for a whole new kitchen. But to buy someone else's botched attempt: Nah, not for us. If we loved the house but they'd painted the kitchen units, we'd have instantly knocked ten grand+ off the asking price......to re-fit the kitchen! (Thankfully, the one we're in the process of buying has a beautifully fitted kitchen that is virtually new.) Besides, we're decorating our son's flat, and the only arguments we've had is about my questionable painting skills (I'm the wallpaper-er). I'll keep watching excellent vids like this (in awe) and stay clear of any ideas of upcycling for the time being!! :D Beautiful kitchen

+1960gal You are too funny! And yes, I have seen more thsn one botched kitchen which is why I was a touch nervous. Prayers helped a great deal, I think lol. We have never had a kitchen this size! +Nicole Miller Well, I went for it. So far so good. I ran into a snafu at first though. There was a wax stain on the top of our cabinets and it bled through the first layer of paint. I ended up putting 2 coats of shellac over it though and that seems to have done the trick.

Hi, Ian! Yes, you can use light wax on furniture paint. I found a few links that mention it , including this one: blogs.democratandchronicle.com/her-community/?p=8516 If you're looking to antique the furniture, you can use the dark wax as well, the effect may just look/act a touch different. Mine are already painted an antique white, and are naturally wearing due to use , water and such. I am debating on distressing them just to make the not wanted wear look better. We didn’t do chalk paint despite the fact that is what I usually work with. I do work with Amy Howard’s waxes and love them and may try this but this despite mine not being chalk paint ?!

How did this hold up? Do you have to re-wax as time goes on? Do fingerprints of grease sink through? Does it stain if food gets on them? I keep reading wax only does not wear well with water and heat in a kitchen.
@nicolemiller1519
@nicolemiller1519 7 жыл бұрын
Infinity Health Pilates Hi there! Thank you for tuning in. The paint held up extremely well with no need for rewax even after two years. Food (including spaghetti sauce) did not stain the cabinets. We've since sold the house, and our new homeowners tell us the cabinets are doing great! I would think they could be rewaxed as needed to keep the sheen. Perhaps every couple years? We did get more wear on the doors directly under the sink and I believe I did a wax touchup once.

There is a sealant you can put on afterwards. Since the wax also acts as a sealant, I omitted that step and clean the cabinets with just a little water and cloth. If the wax rubs off, I can reapply. So far it's been a year and a half and the cabinets look great!

I'm not sure the longevity of this process at all, you probably could of gotten a nice sprayed and destressed finish that wouldn't create issues down the line, if you hired a professional. I would love to see a update on those cabinets after fives years of use.

since this chalk paint along with wax covering, does it completely dry or still smudge?

Hi there!! The wax does dry completely, and you can buff it to a nice gloss. We haven't retouched the cabinets yet--although the ones under the kitchen sink may need some love since they get all the wear and tear!

Nicole Miller thanks for the reply! I'm receiving some solid wood bedroom furniture and I would like to change the appearance of them. definitely using the same color, as my wife wants the atmosphere of the bedroom to be brighter :o) this is a good tutorial for a beginner like me. thanks.

How do you prevent that wax from coming off when you touch, bump etc into the cabinets ?
@ANTONIOZILLA
@ANTONIOZILLA 7 жыл бұрын
Nicole, do you apply the wax to dry paint? And after you're done and everything is dry, do the cabinets feel sticky or tacky from the wax? Or do you seal them with something clear once you are done? I love how this looks but I can't imagine how the end result would feel, nor how the wax stays on when you clean the cabinets. Any special cleaning instructions?

iRonix Hi there! I allowed the paint to dry, then applied the wax. The wax itself is tacky until buffed, after which it is smooth and has a gorgeous sheen. Clean up is very easy--soft cloth and water. You can seal the cabinets with a clear coat, I didn't just to see how they would wear. After two years they held up great. The only cabinet that might have needed a little touch up was under the sink where the garbage was. Lots of water and opening and closing of cabinet doors caused a nick or two. Easily fixed with a touch up and finished with wax.

What base colour did you use on your cupboards? Mine looks as though they are exactly the same as yours. I like the way yours turned out and I I would like to us the same colour base paint. Thanks.

+Mary Moore I used Amy Howard Bauhaus Buff! It was quite light to start, but the light and dark wax really warmed it nicely.

Everything looks fabulous! Ignore the one negative comment -there's always "that one" :) I have a couple of questions if you will? My cabinets are actually bright white and I want to go a little darker and aged, you've inspired me! Because holy cow the price tag! Especially when they are perfectly good cabinets. I have about your sized kitchen, maybe a couple more cabinets? So, I was wondering how many cans of paint you used? And what color? So I can gauge mine :) Also, it looks like you took your doors off to paint? There are so many doors... ugh! Did you just paint around the hinges, what about the drawers? That paint dries in like 30 min right?

Hey Nicole!!! Can I just say I love you!!! You rock and you have the voice for radio and tv...for real! I have a question for you....Can you use another brand of wax other than Amy Howard? Maybe something they sell at Lowes? (I live in a small town and that's all we got girl...lol!) I didnt want to antique my cabinets until I saw YOUR video!

Hi Karen! You are too sweet, thank you!! I think you can try Minwax--I would suggest a quick test on the inside of the cabinet to gauge what it will look like. Good luck on your DIY!

They are super easy to clean! Just a little soap and water. Where the sink is I’ve had to do a little touch up and other than that it’s good to go.

Beautiful, Nicole!!! I have 24 yr old oak cabinets... some areas are worn around the handles... should I sand them, then degrease to prep them? (I'll need to replace hinges and a couple of doors are slightly warped) Compared to other options, and all the work that has to be done in the kitchen, I'd like to Amy Howard the cabinets and put the money into the flooring (going from dated tile to hardwood) and new appliances. What do you think?
@nicolemiller1519
@nicolemiller1519 6 жыл бұрын
I was told that degreasing is really the only step needed and it worked perfectly! I think our cabinets were about 10 years old.

Did the wax not leave a sticky film on the cabinets that got on your hands when touching the cabinets after you were done with the distressing?
@nicolemiller1519
@nicolemiller1519 8 жыл бұрын
The wax is sticky at first, so I let it dry slightly, then buff lightly with a clean cotton cloth. Then, the cabinets feel slick instead of tacky.

Thank you for this video! Our kitchen looks almost the same! We have same color and style cabinets, countertop and backsplash. I just redid my brown kitchen table with the Amy Howard One Step white and I am convinced to do my cabinets and my husband is so nervous that we are going to mess them up. So I am watching videos like crazy to try and convince him that we can do it. How many quarts did you use? Did you use the plain white or a different shade? How long did the process take you?
@nicolemiller1519

+Lori Smith I used 3.5 quarts in Bauhaus Buff, and it took us about three days of straight work. And we save over $5,000! You can always start small, with a piece of furniture. I think you'll do great!

Hi Nicole, I'm wondering now that it has been over three years, how are you feeling about them? Would you do it again? Did they continue to hold up? Have they needed a lot of touch ups? I'm especially wondering how the wax held up where hands are opening the cupboards? Thanks! It's a great video!

Hi there!! I still love them as much as I did the first day we did them. I really enjoy the contrast between the cabinets and flooring. They’ve worn very well, and some areas have needed touch up-especially below the sink where the trash can is. Other than that, where hands touch them, you don’t see a difference. Where spaghetti sauce has splattered, then clean up is easy and I can always re-distress when needed. Cheers and thank you!

Chalk paint is buildable, and doing an extra coat might do the trick. If you’re going that light, I would try the inside of one of the doors to test it out.
