Your so good at what you do and your presentation is excellent! You've gone the extra step so that if someone watching can write things down. You've also gone the extra step to have them written out on the screen right next to you which makes it easy to follow. Please keep up the great work to make this user friendly. Thank you for taking your time in this process for beginners. The questions that I had you made most of them clear for me. Thank you, Bravo Bella!!

Looking forward to what's next on your channel. 🎲🪠

Yes! This is great for kitchen cabinets, I have painted several oak kitchens. Instead of wax I like to use Annie Sloan’s topcoat which she calls lacquer. It comes in Matt or Gloss. Thorough cleaning is very important in kitchens before you paint, remove all the grease and grime first!. Sometimes if the oak is very dry and the original finish is worn off, the tannins in the wood can bleed through. I have a video about what to do for bleed through so you may want to watch that one too! Good luck with your kitchen!

Piece looks really pretty, I love all the detail trim. One thing you may want to always do, especially since you’re teaching others but when apply you’re wax you should always off load you’re brush then apply wax to you’re piece, you should always wait before wiping it off until it feels tacky then buff with lent free cloth it’s just a suggest I personally learned many, many years ago from Annie Sloan herself. I just came across your channel today you have a nice sweet presence, a joy to watch thank you for sharing ..
@DIYDEANNA4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kim! Thanks for watching! I too have met Annie Sloan and watched a live demo with her in Canada, she's great! The techniques I demonstrate are what I learnt while working many years at a furniture painting and faux finishing studio here in Canada. The steps I demonstrate in this video are what has worked the best for me. I always found that if I wait to wipe the wax it requires more effort to remove the excess, then I have to buff really hard which creates a shine and I prefer the matte look. What I love about this process is that everyone will find the steps that work for them, you really can get creative! One of my favourite parts of working at the furniture painting shop was hearing tips from customers and sharing my tips with them, now I get to do this online! Thanks for sharing your process and tips!

Thank u for the videos they are great. Could you please explain "colored wax" does it cover the original paint color? I'm so confused. Thank uou
@DIYDEANNA2 жыл бұрын
Coloured wax is used for protection like the clear wax, the main difference is there is pigment added to the wax (usually white, brown or black) when applied you still see the underneath paint colour it just adds a tint on top, kind of like stain on raw wood. You can apply it allover or just in some areas depending on the look you would like. Watch this video starting around the 10 minute mark to see white wax kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJ3XpmSIlqpsY7s

@DIYDEANNA4 жыл бұрын

Thank you for the helpful information! I’m painting my dresser a chalk paint light pink, but when I used sandpaper the previous light blue color bled through underneath. Will the clear wax and brown wax cover up the blue distress marks?
@DIYDEANNA Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. In my experience the wax will not hide the underneath blue colour. It actually sometimes makes it “pop” even more. If you do not want to see the blue at all then I would suggest another coat of light pink paint and try to avoid sanding the final coat. if you do want to sand the final coat to smooth it out, wait 24 hours after you apply the paint, then use a fine grit like 220 or 400 with very gentle pressure. But it’s not necessary to sand the final coat before waxing. I hope this helps!

Hi, Deanna...I have some bedroom furniture that's oak/veneer that I want to paint grey...but I want like white under the grey first so that when I distress it some of the white shows through. Or do you think if I used a medium brown that that would be a better choice? This will be my first attempt, and I want the set to really look good when I'm done. Please give me some feedback on this. Thank you very much!
@DIYDEANNA3 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks for watching. I think either choice will look great, it's just personal preference. Have you tried looking online for photos of projects other people have done using these colours? Maybe if you see examples of both you will have an easier time deciding. The table in this video would be an example of grey paint with medium brown underneath. Good luck with your bedroom set.

Hello Deanna! I will be redoing a dining table set with no experience. Your videos have been an amazing help. Is the wax sufficient for a dining table set?
@DIYDEANNA4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Great question, I get asked this a lot. For a lot of people the wax is good for dining sets, it wipes up easily and can easily be touched up if it gets a scuff or stain. Also, if you decided to add brown, black or white wax you can get some beautiful looks. No painted surface will be indestructible so using placemats and coasters will definitely help. Another option which I have used is Annie Sloan Lacquer, it’s a water based roll or brush on topcoat and is very durable. The Lacquer is actually used for sealing floors that have been chalk painted so you can imagine how strong that is! I will mention it’s not water proof so if anything spills and sits for a while it could potentially leave a watermark. If you have any other questions let me know. Thanks for watching!

Hi Deanna, really enjoying your videos. What's the difference between Distressing and Shabby Chic?.
@DIYDEANNA4 жыл бұрын
Good question! I’d say Shabby Chic is a type of decor or style, it refers to the whole look. Distressing is the act of wearing away paint to created distressed furniture. Distressed furniture is part of the Shabby Chic style. Does that make sense?

I want to redo an old wood 70's model couch. I like the matte look, If I chalk paint and wax finish will that be enough to protect against chipping?
@DIYDEANNA4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question! Like any painted surface nothing is indestructible, the great thing is since you’ve painted it you can always touch up if needed a few years down the road. I’ve painted many items... side tables, bed frames, dressers, kitchen tables and the paint and wax hold up well. Just make sure your couch wood is clean before you start, if it’s really shiny you can lightly sand the wood before you paint. Watch my how to chalk paint furniture video for step by step instructions. Thanks for watching.

Hi I am new to your channel and I watched the first video when you painted the furniture piece. My question is when you apply your chalk paint and chalk wax, do you have to wait before you distressed this furniture piece? Such as 2 or 3 weeks?
@DIYDEANNA3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching both videos! You can distress right after you apply your wax. Because the wax is fresh it will be softer and easier to sand. If you wait a couple of weeks you can still distress it will just be harder to sand through. Hope this helps!

Hi I’m new to your channel I am thinking of painting my antique hutch. My question is once I paint my hutch and give it a second quote then I use the clear wax can I also use the black wax to make it a little old ? I’m very scared to paint my hutch is a very dark wood I want to use an eggshell chalk paint. I’ve been watching lots of videos and I love your videos because you go step-by-step and you make things very easy so thank you very much I am please and how you explain the chalk paint. God bless you🙏🏻❤️
@DIYDEANNA4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks for watching. Yes, you are correct... do a layer of clear wax over the entire piece first then apply the black wax using the same technique "wax on, wax off". Do a test patch on the side of your hutch at the bottom to see how the black wax looks. Because it is black you will see the direction how you rub it on so I like to be consistent. Either all up and down to create a streaky look or circular to create a more smoky look. You might also choose to just put the black wax in some areas like details or edges, get creative! If you find the black wax is too dark you can rub clear wax on top and it will lift some of the black pigment, almost like a magic eraser. Or you can mix the clear and black wax together to make a less concentrated black. If this is your first project and you are nervous about painting your hutch you can practice on something that is less daunting like a picture frame or even a scrap piece of wood to get the hang of the steps and build your confidence! Happy Painting :)

I would like the chairs I'm doing to be white with blue showing though the distress. Should I chalk paint blue and then chalk paint white over it, then distress? If so, do I wax after blue and white coats? Thank you!

do i have to put primer paint on the furniture before putting the chalk paint or it can be put directly on the wood?

I have an oak mantle I would like to distress. We’ve gone with an old farmhouse look (grays and blacks) can you recommend what I could use to keep the oak but incorporate the grays or blacks to distress it?

Nice... I used a different brand of chalk paint for an old desk that I repainted a couple of years ago and put the wax on the top as a sealer but the top chipped and stained very quickly. I'm wondering if the wax is enough protection or if it was a bad brand of chalk paint. I'm getting ready to do a dresser and night stand and will be using Annie Sloan paint. Wondering if I should use a sealer, especially on the nightstand which gets a lot of use. Any suggestions?

Hi! Thanks for your questions! In my experience Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and wax have not chipped off but the wax can definitely get dirty/stained or scratches. If this happens I lightly sand to remove the imperfections in the wax (careful not to sand away the paint) and then reapply the wax and it’s like new again. The other option is to use a different sealer like Annie Sloan Lacquer. This is more durable than Wax and is a liquid topcoat you brush or roll on. Comes in flat or gloss I believe. Keep in mind nothing is indestructible, if you leave a cup of water on the Lacquer and it sweats you might end up with a water ring if you drag something rough along the surface it can scratch. Check out these two awesome videos, these ladies just did some extensive tests on sealers. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJrOkHWqp6-IjJo and kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZO9e3aNodGWopY good luck with your nightstands!

I would like to redo my kitchen cupboard however they varnished. Do I sand down first before painting. Would chalk paint be ideal for kitchen cupboards around heat fats and oils and water

Love your videos!!!! One quick question? Is it ok to use other kind of sealers like polyurethane over chalk paint ? Thank you!
@DIYDEANNA4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yes you can use other sealers, I usually stick with water-based and brush or roll on. Because Chalk Paint is so porous the sealers will absorb quite quickly so you don't want to over work them, just get it on and move to the next section. Most will take at least two coats to look even, but read the can and see what the manufacturer recommends. And always good to do a test patch in a hidden area to make sure you like the look :) Annie Sloan makes a sealer she calls Lacquer and it comes in matte and gloss, these work well with this paint!

If i want 3 colors, can you explain what to do with the colors? Thanks so much!
@DIYDEANNA3 жыл бұрын
One option is to paint the colours in layers, allow to dry between each layer. When you distress then you see all the colours, the top colour is seen the most and the other two colours just show a little like the brown on this table.

I used to use an 'Antiquing Gel' to age a tole painted piece. I like that look on my furniture as well. Would I just use a colored wax (instead of the clear), to get that effect? Can these waxes be used on items that are painted with acrylic paint instead of chalk paint?
@DIYDEANNA4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lori, you are correct! Use a brown, black or white tinted wax to get an aged look. The application is the same as the clear. They work well on chalk paint because the paint itself is very dry and the wax absorbs in, if other paint is a bit shiny it might not soak in as well. It could work but you won’t know until you try!

I am a first time distresser! I am doing an old piece. It looks kind of waxy right now. I know you said you don’t need to sand but should I to remove,that waxiness? Also I am going to paint it white. Should I use clear or white wax?
@DIYDEANNA6 ай бұрын
If it feels waxy you might want to start with cleaning and a bit of sanding. Below is a video that will give you a few tips! You can use clear or white wax, the white wax may not make much of a difference on white, it shows up more on darker colours. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZmcnmuvebGJZrssi=F9ZqlK1A0_cIoECV
