Thanks for this review/comparison, Amy. I recently got this mixer and noticed the same thing you've demonstrated here. Went on a mad hunt to figure out if it was just this model or others as I was also considering the Classic Plus. Found out after some digging that the spring assembly has been phased out. Noticed that this effect does not occur with the whip or hook attachments.With the flex edge the noise/knocking about seems to subside once actual ingredients are added to the bowl (did a quick test with some oatmeal). So I decided to let the mixer run briefly with no bowl and just the flex beater in place and it actually sounded like your Design Series. I've found that with the extra play because of the missing spring and the fact that the flex edge scrapes the bowl, this creates extra movement on the shaft and with it, that annoying sound. *UPDATE* Today, I actually used the mixer for the first time - with actual ingredients in the bowl (which essentially acts as a buffer, so to speak, between the beater and the bowl) as intended. There was no clanking and the mixer operates wonderfully. Typical of most companies though - always "fixing" what isn't broken to "cut costs." But I will say, I am actually happy with this mixer. I think certain demonstrations are best done in the way an instrument is intended to be used (ie. adding an actual recipe to the bowl) so as to offer as much information as possible/cover all the bases. Thanks to your video though, I know what my mixer should and should not sound like.

You would think adding a lubricant, such as water would have helped. Kinda odd to have to use actual ingredients, like you are actually using it. But then, most of the time there isn't all that extra play. But if KA wants to save $5 then goof for them. All their competitors still use the spring. Nice your actual use turned out to be a non-issue. Thanks for your comment.

@@EricLearnstoCook I'm thinking it has to do with the density of solid ingredients holding the attachment down rather than anything to do with lubrication. Whatever they're saving isn't worth it, I've been reading through reviews, so many people have returned their mixers, many after multiple exchanges. I just got one because it was a great sale price, but I'm definitely buying the spring or fabricating one and installing myself - just need a hammer and punch set to temporarily remove the notch so the spring can slide on, then just pops back in. Same exact design, just doesn't have the spring included. Might call KA and request they send the spring.

I had the good fortune of purchasing an older model at an estate sale that is about 10 years old. It is a red artisan with a metal bowl, and has the spring, and seems to work fine. My only complain is that the bowl sticks on the bottom (ugh) making it very difficult to remove it from the base when you want to clean. But other than that, I love my artisan and its non-stick white heavy dough hook and mixing paddle. It's a workhorse, and takes minimal space on my counter! Thank you for the informative review Amy!

How unfortunate, as I came across this video while doing some research after seeing Macy’s is having a Valentines Day sale on them and I also have a lot of points built up. Aside from the annoying noise, imagine how a loosely attached paddle will work with stiff doughs like oatmeal raisin cookies. God forbid you use it for bread dough. As someone else mentioned, the worst part will be how much faster the motor and attachments will deteriorate on a product that used to last a life time. Thank you for posting this! You saved me a good chunk of money.

My older 5-quart bowl-lift mixer (from 1993) still incorporated the tensioning spring as part of the agitator shaft assembly. My new 6-quart bowl-lift mixer is, of course, missing that spring, as part of their "new design". (Interesting the replacement cost for the new shaft assembly costs about $14.00, whereas the older shaft assembly - with an additional spring and washer - only costs $6.00. Go figure). Clearly the 'bean-counters' at Whirlpool are stripping-bare what used to be a very reliable design - unless, of course this is an error in assembly - hardly acceptable practice, either. Trying the same experiment on my [newer] 6-quart bowl-lift mixer - which means using the Flex Edge beater in an empty bowl - produced a little bit of clicking, as the beater rode-up on the shaft while in rotation - but nothing like what you experienced. And during its many uses with all sorts of attachments, never was aware of any extraneous noise or 'clanking'. I love the story from Diane about KA explaining the deletion of the spring is the result about concern it may "... fall off and get lost". HA-! One wonders if that's an official line from KA, or this customer service agent merely made it up. What a bunch of nonsense.
@AmyLearnsToCook7 жыл бұрын
I laughed at that explanation too. I've used these mixers for years and I often read forums and FB groups and I have never heard of the spring falling off. It probably just speeds up the production time to get rid of the spring. I have a bowl lift that has one and one that doesn't...for some reason it doesn't make much difference. I am thinking maybe the paddle is heavier or something. On the tilt heads, the clanking around is ridiculous!

This is a very late comment since you posted the video 5 years ago! LOL. However, it's too bad that you returned it considering the bargain basement price because the noise you heard was mainly because your beater was too low and needed to be manually adjusted by the user. I got rid of my squeaky beater just by adjusting the height, as well as the natural softening of the silicone edge from usage. Secondly, KitchenAid decided to rid of the spring many years ago on all their models - tilt head AND bowl lift models. You can buy an after-market spring/washer to add to your mixer but it requires that you know how to disassemble the mixer head. It's too bad you passed on this steal of a purchase.

I have mixed feelings about this review. You are for sure honest and knowledgeable about this product much more than I am as a new user of this mixer but I will take your outcome with a grain of salt because even though the mixer you just brought is not to to your liking because of the missing part. ( spring )From what I know KitchenAid is no longer making their mixers that way so it’s more of a change in manufacturing than a defect in the mixer and although you showed that the newer one does make a louder noise and added movement that does not bother me because it’s just how it works now that they are made in the way that they are. Now, if you showed that the paddle came off or did not turn as needed to mix or something to that nature because of the difference, that is what I would call a defect and I would definitely want my money back and return it. All in all, as long as it works the way that it should I am happy with this product spring or no spring the only other option would be to buy a different brand all together. I do appreciate your review and your expertise. I guess I am one of a few that is happy with the new mixer.

I dont' know what they are thinking any more and who makes these decisions. I tried to get a mixer in Jan. of this last year, it came without the spring and washer too, and alot of other probelms. The bowl was dented, the latch that holds the head down wouldn't go all the way over, and when you turned it on, the speeds one at a time, it would go really high, and then slow down and up again, all on its own. Its way too expensive a machine to have that many problems. I think that there are serious quality control issues there too.. I have noticed recently on amazon with the reviews on the artisan that there are alot that are unverified reviews, then people are making reviews like been working great for 7 years, just like new, but what prompted them to all of a sudden write a review? when I commented and asked each and everyone, no one replied.. so I dont know whats going on there, and now the spring too on top of the bowls with the and gray stuff they give off. someone needs to take control over there I think, its sad to worry about a purchase that is so expensive and not be able to trust it..thanks for the review.

I saw that. It's possible that they made the attachments to fit without a spring. That is, they are tight to put on and off, where these have slack and the spring takes slack out. With extra slack, the attachment is free to wiggle and cause all sorts of noise. The glass bowl on this model doesn't help as that could be part of the problem. One thing to note is this came straight out of the box with the toys they provided. It should work. It should not need any adjustments. Hi Amy I was thinking about buying a costway stand mixer from Walmart do you think there any good. Thanks
@EricLearnstoCook5 жыл бұрын
Donald, Wal-Mart has a 60 or 90 day return period. Just be sure to check it first. Buy your mixer, use it as you would normally use one. See if you like it. No way to test for durability in the short term. Wal-Mart is good for taking things back if you don't like something. Are there other reviews on this mixer?

I bought a kitchenaid last year and returned it because it didn’t have a spring, it really makes a difference because it needs that pressure to keep it from banging around

A sad day for kitchen equipment. I bought a kitchen aid food processor a couple years ago as an upgrade to an 11 cup kitchenaid food pro that I dearly love. The newer model is a total hunk of junk, underpowered, hard to use, couldn't even make a yeast dough without stalling out. It has since been replaced with a breville sous chef. I know what brand I WON'T be considering when it comes time to replace my stand mixer. Shameful, kitchenaid.
@sashineb.21147 жыл бұрын
Sad to have that happen. I had one of KA's hand blenders and the blade broke when I made a smoothie. There were no hard ingredients, just juice, yogurt, banana, some oats. Whatever happened to that KA quality?

This is the model KSM105GB which is 300 watts compared to the Artisan (model KSM150) and Artisan Design Series (model KSM155) which are 325 watts, I wonder if the reduced power is part of the issue?
@AmyLearnsToCook6 жыл бұрын
No. This issue is play on the post. When I put the paddle on the new one and the one with the spring, there was a lot of play on the paddle because of a lack of spring. The difference in wattage is minimal and KA has weird math on their wattage anyway.
@steveniemyer92887 жыл бұрын

Thx Amy. A very interesting and informative video. I wonder why they changed the design? This is something I never thought about before…BTW I love all your videos they are just wonderful!
@lenawahlberg61092 жыл бұрын
They only change design to make it cheaper. Cheaper equals less quality. Less quality equals more complaints from the customers. More complaints makes them sell out the mashines for a low price. A low price is seldom a bargain. If you get a deal that sounds too good to be true, it IS too good to be true. You end up disappointed.
@Nannerchan7 жыл бұрын
It was a Canadian model. (Bilingual English/ French and measurements were metric ) Would that make a difference?

I am not sure. From what KA said during my chat with their customer service, they are no longer putting a spring on any tilt heads.

I don't know what's happening with kitchenaid quality control,I'm in Australia and just purchased my first ever artisan mixer . The first time I plugged it in it went bang and shorted out my power accompanied by a burning electrical smell and smoke from the back. Kitchenaid Australia had it collected with the promise of a new one. 5 emails and multiple phone calls and well over a month still no mixer,only promises its being processed! And now I'm worried about this spring thing as well.

Get a new pin installed to protect the castings for the base and mixer head. It may not be a compete fix but it may help protect the real expensive parts.

Amy, after watching your review on the mini I decided on the Artistan. Bought direct from KitchenAid. Haven't received it yet. If it don't have a spring I will adjust the height of the head, and possibly retro fit a spring and washer. The other thing that might work in place of a spring is a rubber bushing like a short piece of flexible rubber hose.
@davidbgreensmith3 жыл бұрын
Did the people at the store have any comment on the missing/lack of spring? Have you spoken to Kitchen Aid to as for their take on it? It seems hard to believe they would release something with such an obvious flaw. I see a few comments on here about adjusting screws and such, but my expectation for such a premium device is that I shouldn't have to fine tune the mechanics.

you know those spring parts will still fit the newer kitchenaids, just get the spring and washer knock out the pin on the planetary, you should have one more c clip on the inside holding the connector pin not sure the exact name but it's the dowl pin you connect your attachments to drop the pin put the washer on the pin followed by the spring, put back together

Hi Amy, My Kitchenaid Classic mixer of 20 years broke while making brioche with 500 grams of flour, 1 1/2 cups butter and 5 eggs. It kneaded for a couple of minutes when the gears meshed/broke or something else did(it turns on, you can hear the motor trying to turn the hub but it cant). I was heartbroken. Luckily I have new Pro Line Kitchenaid 7qt which handled the dough with ease. I ended up purchasing a new Kitchenaid Custom for small jobs....a small machine is essential when I bake cakes especially for the channel I recently started. I just wonder if it is years of use why it gave in or was the dough too heavy? In your videos you seem to give them challenging doughs and the KA machines power through. Do you think 20 year old KA classics have the nylon gear or all metal? Thank you.

Hello Amy, thank you for your video. I watched a comparison video about tilt head mixers vs bowl lift mixers as I was trying to inderstand why my new Artisan 8 quarter bowl lift was making a strange noise. This mixer is sold in Italy and a lot of people over here claim to hear this noise while Artisan 6.9, as it is called here, is mixing even liquid or semi liquid ingredients. After your video I think that the reason is because this model doesn't have a spring on the shaft where the mixing attachments are fixed but following your link I see that Commercial doesn't seem to have any spring either. Does it cause any noise?
@toria01dan4 жыл бұрын
I have this exact make and model! The red mixer with a glass bowl. I got mine completely free about 5 years ago, big mix up with a bed bath and beyond order, but regardless I received it. I don't experience the same issue you did unfortunately, mine did have the spring with it, and I agree it does make a huge difference. I believe this model is basically an artisan but it's not labeled that because it's a 300 Watt and Artisans are 325 Watt. But my model worked just fine, I'm sorry yours did not, but it was a good deal for the time.

I got a new kitchen aid artisan for xmas and it's sparking and making a crackling sound inside....I can see the sparks through the speed lever slot...
@VanityFerret4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the head of your new mixer needs adjusting. Tilt the head up and you will see a slot head screw in the neck. Turn the screw to the left to raise the head and to the right to lower it. Glass bowls are likely thicker at the bottom so when the head is in working position the beater may be contacting to bowl. They are not supposed to. Adjust and test as needed. Even with a spring cap there will be play in the beater attachment because these are not precision mounts. Kitchenaid likely stopped making the post springs to cut down on areas that hold food residue and simply are not needed.
@Allisonsgrwmm16662 жыл бұрын
It’s because kitchenaid discontinued the spring and washer my classic plus mixer from 2020 but it doesn’t bounce and my 1999 ultra power mixer has a spring and washer and it’s the same as the 2020 one so that is an explanation of to it I hope you know
@luisocamp27536 жыл бұрын
Oh no! That really is a serious issue. If i'm not mistaken this are the one's qvc has. But if that would happen to me I would just remove the peg from the post by gently hammering a nail on it and install a spring on it and put back the peg but the bad thing is that I can not see any spring on amazon being sold or maybe I need to call Kitchenaid hotline for that, but still its a serious issue since the spring is very hard or even rare to find plus i see the rotating hub wags back and fourth, maybe would even cause oil leckage that might go straight to your food! Yikes! Again thanks Amy for letting us know about this, you're such a helping hand especially for those who are looking for a kitchenaid mixer and being there telling us to avoid that specific model or any tilt head mixer without a spring.

Thank you Amy for your feedback. More consumers need to be made aware of this popping noise which is the leakage of a design flaw. Such a play is mechanically inconceivable. I don't understand the logic of the Kitchenaid engineers. I have contacted KitchenAid several times about this clattering noise. Each time, they told me that this noise was completely normal. This set is 1/ mechanically stupid 2/ far too noisy. Unfortunately, today this spring is no longer supplied, and KitchenAid food processors are that noisy. This information should be brought to the attention of all consumers. As long as this problem of play and chattering is not solved, it is better to turn to another brand. Unless you like to regularly send your food processor for repair (I'm convinced that this play distorts the mechanical axis in the long term), and you like the sound of a horse's hoof clacking ...
