An ability that boosts KICK power

Iron Fist was released back in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. That was a cool ability, but where is the version of it for kicking moves? In this video, explore why and create one.
The goal of the video was to create a counterpart to Hitmonchan's Iron Fist, since Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan were originally a pair. Similar to how Zacian and Zamazenta are thematic counterparts, with thematic abilities that are also counterparts. This video is by popular viewer request, so while competitive play might be referenced, this is not a competitive viability video.
As explained in the video, I read the move data for every single move in English and Japanese. English because it's one of the languages I'm fluent in, and Japanese because that is the base language and culture of the series. All of Pokémon as we know it in English is derivative of its original form in Japan. In each of my videos, I research the topic thoroughly and support my arguments with data (be it game data or dialogues). I am very deliberate with what is fact and what is an educated guess. I include sources in the link section at the bottom of the description.
I say this with the utmost politeness: It's okay to not know or understand something. At the same time, if your comment seems extremely uninformed, I'm not obligated to answer, and probably won't.
For example, I made a video all about how Iron Fist ability works and what moves count as punches in the code. It was clearly stated in the video that the games are made in Japan, and the determination of "punch" or "not a punch" is based on the Japanese names and descriptions. We can't just use English. I specifically explained in the video, that Sucker Punch isn't a punch and why it isn't. After all of that, I've had people try to comment that Sucker Punch should count as a punch. I have 0 reason to answer comments like that. The video reasonably addresses the topic, and so does Google. I'm not interested in repetition, and would much rather move onto the next topic with people that can be bothered to watch the video, or actually do some research rather than argue based on personal feelings.
Feel free to use the mechanics or ideas for Pokémon Mods, Romhacks, or even your own game. It's a common enough idea that I wouldn't try to claim ownership of something anyone would come up with.

READ ME: Check the description for details like what music is used or the site that I use for Japanese move data. Any corrections will be added under this pinned comment. Note: Aqua Step is already affected by Dancer ability, thus classified as a Dance. I'm not going to take a move away from Dancer pokémon when we can just create a new Water type move that is explicitly a kick. Obviously, the Water/Fighting Quaquaval, would get this new kick. Iron Sole pokémon get a new kick, Dancers keep their dance. Everyone is happy, there no point debating this. Create something new, rather than take away. I don't know if the Game Freak game coding currently supports moves with two offensive move categories. Aura Sphere is a "はどう" (wave/pulse) and a "bomb". Aura Sphere is boosted by Mega Launcher, and negated by Bulletproof as a result. This counts as being in two categories; however, one is a boost and one is a negation. Right now, we still don't have a move or ability that is affected by two move category boosts, and I don't know if that is something Pokémon would allow. My stance remains is just as it is in the video. The things I call a kick, I'm 100% confident are kicks. The things that are listed at the absolute end of the video are there because they have potential, but I'm not 100% on them. When I don't know something, I try not to make assumptions. So I didn't want to just assume something is a kick because the pokémon is "likely kicking" when a punch can be used to viably perform the move. Errors: In the section, where I talk about the move "けたぐり" the Base Power is 80 when it should be "---", the Power Points are also incorrect.

I say make a solid Dark type kick, Nintendo would likely never have "Groin Kick" but maybe "Gut Kick"? A move that has lowers the opponent's speed and causes them to be unable to use special attacks for the next turn. That would cover the immunity problem.

Move Ideas: Low Blow - Dark Type - 40 Base Power - 90% Accuracy - 10 PP The user performs a swift sweeping kick close to the ground, knocking all surrounding Pokémon down, causing any hazards to activate again for them. [Spikes, Toxic Spikes, Stealth Rocks, Sticky Web, etc] [Hits all opponents and all allies] Slide Kick - Ice Type - 70 Base Power - 95% Accuracy - 15 PP The user coats the ground in a slippery ice before sliding into the opponent. No secondary effect. Cyclone Kick - Flying Type - 50 Base Power - 85% Accuracy - 10 PP The user steadies their focus before striking the opponent with a strong spinning midair kick, swapping the opponent out of battle.

If Lopunny gets this hypothetical ability and access to more kick moves I'm all for it. It would be perfect for it given how the dex goes on about how graceful it moves and how hard it can kick when threatened. Edit: Also, I'd like to add that the extra boost to kick moves might make up for its low base attack and it would just be nice to have a pseudo Mega Lopunny. Just giving a Pokemon more options to use them is fantastic since even Hitmonlee users may consider keeping Unburden for the speed boost instead of going the Choice/Life Orb option if it had Iron Sole as an option.

This has been a glaring omission in the game so I'm glad you took the time to flesh out a kick enhancement ability! Also top-tier naming! Here are some mons I think should get Iron Soles: Hitmonlee, Hitmontop, Mega Lopunny, Lokix, Mienshao, Phermosa, and Marshadow. I've personally thought that along with the other body-specific abilities, there should be one for head butts. Some naming ideas off the top of my head "badum tsh": "Lunk Head", "Diamond Head", "Iron Skull" "Thick Skull", "And Cranium". This makes me wish "Rock Head" wasn't already an ability....
@TrixterTheFemboy

Personally I don't think giving Hitmontop Iron Soles as well as Hitmonlee is a good idea, would step on the toes of the kicking-focused one imo. Mega Lopunny would much rather have Scrappy, and Mienshao never really struck me as using kicks instead of it's ribbonlike arms. The others make sense though, and Tsareena of course. As for the headbutt one, I think Thick Skull works great

@Chronoflation

I like the idea of an ability named Thick Skull making you immune to psychic moves cause you're too thick headed to believe in the magic right in front of you. Or maybe it works like unaware and makes you immune to opponent's stat changes since being called thick headed is a phrase that means you're kinda dumb/just not able to really comprehend things around you. I like Flex Legs for kicking boosts that gives a smaller damage boost but also improves the accuracy of kicking moves by 10% (and leaves a more unique name that still fits the theme of the original kick-y mon) and then make the head boosting ability Plated Skull (like when people need a metal plate put in their heads due to head injuries) for damage boosting and a way to reference the fact that the most powerful head hitting moves have heavy recoil, like Head Smash. Also would love an ability called Fractured Skull that drops defenses and boosts speed and attack when using head moves, and also gives them a 30% chance to inflict confusion on the user and opponent. But that may be taking the real world injuries references a bit too far, lol. Armored Body might be good for body/hip moves like all the Bodyslam and Slam type moves

I would almost argue that Aqua Step IS a kicking move. It is the signature move of Quaquaval, who is described in the Scarlet Pokédex as having powerful legs and that a single kick can send a truck rolling. It does also perform a kick for its animation of the move.

This is neat, but I think it'd be cool if Hitmonlee's ability felt less like a copy paste of Iron Fist. Maybe something that makes kicking moves bypass accuracy checks and protect would give it a cool niche. The Urshifus can already bypass protect with all their moves, so in the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal. It would however let Hitmonlee be a solid response to Evasion boosting moves and simultaneously eliminate the main drawbacks of the most iconic kicking moves. But I think this ability in particular would also be really great for a Secretary Bird pokemon, which is partially known for its crazy accuracy with its stomps.
@CammyMeeleTea
@CammyMeeleTea 6 ай бұрын
That's the point though. The Urshifus are a pair and do the same thing but slightly different. Plusle and Minun are a pair. The point is for Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee to be counterparts. As for your idea, that's a cool idea. Why not give that to Hitmontop? It spin kicks so fast that you can't evade it. He came later, so he doesn't need to be the same as the OG pair.

Great in depth exploration as usual! I've wanted an ability like Iron Sole for a little while now - though the name I brainstormed was Mighty Calves. When I heard about Sharpness as Sc/Vi launched it seemed such an obvious idea to implement and yet I hadn't really considered it - so a kick-based ability is long overdue, especially with its clear counterpart in Iron Fist. While we're on the subject, a boosting ability for the new group of wind-based moves would be pretty cool to see, maybe call it Gale Force? And ever since Bulletproof was introduced, I figured a boosting ability for those ball/bomb based attacks would be great too, call it Bombardier (or given that could be considered too similar to Bombirdier's name, perhaps Grenadier)? Distinguishing categories for tail-based and head/horn-based moves in future would also make a lot of sense so we can see them get ability interactions as well.

Hitmonlee also had exclusive access to _the_ best Fighting move in Gen 1 in Hi Jump Kick, coupled with the second-highest Attack stat of any Fighting Pokémon at the time (and still third-highest during Gen 2, losing only to Heracross and Machamp). Sure, the move was weaker than its modern iteration, at 85 power, but everything else was even weaker. Furthermore, because the move was badly programmed, crash damage was always 1 hit point, and ignored altogether against Ghosts. Most of the others, including of course Hitmonchan, had to get by with the inaccurate and recoil-inducing Submission. Low Kick was fixed to 50 power and had 90 accuracy (the weight gimmick and full accuracy were until Gen 3), but at least it also had 30% flinch (removed in Gen 3). And Double Kick is mostly alright and fully accurate unlike the others, but not particularly strong. Karate Chop would have been great for Mankey and Machop with how crits worked in Gen 1... except it was Normal-type due to what I have to assume was an honest mistake. I see no explanation to why they would _intentionally_ not make it Fighting until Gen 2, so it has to be an accident that didn't get caught until after the game was released. Hitmonchan was further screwed for the entire first three Gens by the fact the elemental punches were special. Also, Mach Punch didn't exist in Gen 1. It's surprising, considering all of this, to hear that Hitmonchan has always had more fans than Hitmonlee.

I honestly think that Hitmonlee was actually more popular than Hitmonchan, but what you said there was completely irrelevant for that. I thought of this idea for a clay pokemon that would use an ability like this, that would evolve by being molded and fired in a kiln. It would start out pure Ground, but upon evolution gain the Fighting type, because it was molded into the visage of a great warrior by the artisan who molds it. It's tradition in, whatever region this would be in, for only the master artisan to be allowed to mold the pokemon of wandering trainers. but incidentally at the time of whatever adventure the player would be one, there would unusually be two master artisans, and holding the same status and authority, constantly bicker an squabble over what the ideal shape of a "great warrior" is. Depending on version, one the artisans would exhaust the other in an argument, and you'd get one form of the pokemon or the other. One Artisan would think upper body strength is everything and make the pokemon super top heavy with small legs (think a build like Larry the Lobster from Spongebob), and the other Artisan would think powerful legs are the visage of a powerful warrior, and give it massive legs and feet, but a tiny upperbody and arms. And nauturally, they'd get the respective abilities Iron Fist and Iron Sole (although I thought up the name Foot Force).

To be fair with the absense of such an ability until now, maybe the devellopement team at the time felt there wasn't enough diverse kick moves to make it useful, it's only recently that more unique kick moves and abilities boosting other "move type", while back in gen 4, the elemental punches already existed. As such, I think today, a kick boosting ability is a one day sure thing before it arrives, it's not matter of if anymore, but when. Besides that, nothing about the video, it's good.

The only flying types that I can picture kicking are the ones that don't really fly-Flamigo (I know they _can_ fly, but they don't seem to often), Galarian Zapdos, and Dodrio.

The TCG has two official names for Electric-type Kicks - Sparking Kick and Energy Kick. Raichu and Elekid learn these two kicks respectively. Personally, I like that Hitmonlee has less coverage than Hitmonchan. Makes the two unique, if Hitmonlee got access to elemental kicks, you would probably have little to no reason to use Hitmonchan since all the kicks are stronger. Lastly, I think Sawk, Mienshao, Lopunny, Tauros, Rapidash, Lokix, and Blaziken should probably get it.

i like your takes, i also always wanted a kick boosting ability specially because i love blaziken and think blazikick is such a sick move in concept. i know he has speed boost as his HA and it would be wastefull to take that away, but what if starters were to have 2 HAs to compensate having only 1 regular ability? (hey, video idea for you there. could be the same for legendaries) well anyway... the only thing i dislike is your suggested name, iron sole sounds kinda... lame? also i get its a pun with soul/sole and all that, but still. also name verlaps with iron fist, i feel like those abilities could have a diferent prefix to them. i think other names like crushing heel, spring legs, heavy foot, horseshoed, or just steel toes could work.

They should make an Electric type version of Blaze Kick and give it to physical Electric Pokémon that need a stronger STAB (yes, I'm taking about Luxray), as well as, of course, other kicking based Pokémon. I think Triple Arrows would not be a kick for the same reason Close Combat isn't. It's 1 kick and 3 arrows. Close Clombat is a collection of kicks and punches (maybe headbutts and tail hits too for some Pokemon since it doesn't specify), so I think being related to various different types of hits negates it from being improved. Otherwise, I agree with the decision making here and like it. Though, I think the power boost is a bit high for an offensive list of moves that includes one with a 130 base power move. But sound moves have Boomburst, so I guess it's fair

Fish and other legless things learn Bounce. Making Bounce a kick, can rob legless pokémon of Flying coverage. That's why it's important to consider every angle. Why not add a Flying-type kick? There are 10 Pokémon that can learn at least three of the moves you've categorized: - Blaziken - Flamigo - Hitmonlee - Lokix - Lopunny - Medicham - Mudbray / Mudsdale - Pheremosa - Tsareena A couple are obvious improvements (Lokix already needs a secondary abilitiy, Iron Sole is strictly better than Hitmonlee's Reckless, etc.). A couple just won't work (Pheremosa is stuck with Beast Boost, Medicham's Pure Power is still better). The rest raise interesting questions: Is it better than Mega Blaziken's Speed Boost or Mega Lopunny's Scrappy? Should it replace Own Tempo for the mud horses, or Inner Focus? Would it make Flamigo to powerful for early-game? Etc. Also, I question whether Triple Axel should count. No one learns it by level up, and the move tutor gives it to Pokémon not really known for kicking prowess, like Alolan Ninetales, Articuno, Jynx, and Delibird. Or, that don't even have feet at all, like Milotic, Froslass, Cryogonal, the Popplio line, and Frosmoth. I'm not sure what Game Freak's intention was with this move, but it doesn't seem like feet are involved.

I rather make the ability "Flexible Legs" to improve the accuracy of kicking moves and boost their damage by 10%. It's not much more damage or accuracy, but it takes High Jump Kick up to a 143 BST move with 99% accuracy, and that's pretty good. The damage boost could be 20%, still leaving it a lesser power boosting ability in exchange for the accuracy boost, but I think it's worth it. Plus, the flexibility goes well with Hitmonlee's design with stretchy limbs, compared to Hitmonchan having iron weighted gloves and an almost armored look with his shoulder pads

ok i can maybe understand stomping tantrum because the stomps aren't the things doing the damage to the enemy. i personally believe it should count because if you can omit more force from the initial point of the strike (in this case the feet as you are stomping the ground to make this attack) having an ability that strengthen your feet should boost that as well. but aqua step definitely has the right to be a kicking move, the name of both English and Japanese is "aqua step" the Japanese description is "With its gentle steps that drip water, it can toy with the opponent and deal damage. He gives away his quickness." (水もしたたる かろやかな 足どりで 相手を 翻弄し ダメージを 与える。 自分の 素早さを あげる。) meanwhile the English description is "The user toys with the target and attacks it using light and fluid dance steps. This also boosts the user's Speed stat." all of these mention the dance move it makes with it's legs to be the origin point of this attack, so you either have the stomping tantrum situation where it's up to opinions or quaquavel is actually kicking and dancing at the same time with wet feet to deal damage to opponents and based on the fact the move makes contact (in other words the two pokemon collide during the use of the move) it's fair to assume that quaquavel actually kicks the opponent with wet feet during this move

as for a move idea: Curb-stomp: a vicious stomp uncaring for the target's health type: dark BP: 75 accuracy: 90% PP: 15 2ndary effects: (yes it's possible to have more then one 2ndary effect, take a look at the elemental fangs) A. 15% chance to reduce target's defense by one stage B. higher critical hit chance

No. I've already read the descriptions of every move in English and in Japanese, and commissioned a translator to review what nuance I might have missed, so that I don't have to rely purely really clunky Google translations. It's odd to tell me the Japanese description when I spend a whole section explaining that I'm doing that already. You're asserting a different conclusion without introducing any new information that addresses the one thing that I was unsure of: that it can be performed without kicking. As said in the video, it's not that it couldn't be a kick, it's that nothing about the description makes it uniquely a kick. Boxers (who aren't allowed to kick) will change up their footwork to evade, out maneuver, and overwhelm opponents. The same goes for fencers and sword fighters. Close Combat even has the pokémon rush up close to start infighting. Another thing addressed in the video is that we need to look at how Japanese versions sort moves by category, like how moves with "ほう" aren't automatically a cannon move despite other moves with "ほう". If you looked into move categories like i said, you'd see that Aqua Step is already affected by Dancer ability, thus classified as a Dance. I'm not going to take a move away from Dancer pokémon when we can just create a new kick for Iron Sole pokémon. Part of this video's research was to see if a move was already part of an exclusive move category. It's better to create a new Water type kick, and let the Dancer pokémon keep their Dance. If we add a new Water kick, Quaquaval would probably get it, Iron Sole or not. And Iron Sole pokémon get their new moist kick. Again, the goal is to create more options without taking options from others. I hope that helps explain my stance.

@user-oy2zg3bt6n 6 ай бұрын
@@CammyMeeleTea alright, but did you research if a move can be in multiple categories?
@CammyMeeleTea
@CammyMeeleTea 6 ай бұрын
Yes, I did. That's what I explained in the section about moves that could be boosted by Mega Launcher and/or blocked by Bulletproof. The whole Match Gotcha explanation shows how the move is neither, despite having "ほう" in the name. The opposite is Aura Sphere. Aura Sphere is both a ball/bomb move and a pulse/wave move. Both are listed in the name and description explicitly. Unfortunately, Mega Launcher is offensive and Bulletproof is defensive, so we don't know for sure if they'd make a "boosts ball and bomb moves" ability, so that we can see if we can have a move work for two different category boosts. It probably could happen, but again that’s an assumption. Again, this changes nothing because it still doesn't address my fundamental hesitation: Aqua Step can possibly be performed by dancing fluidly to confound the opponent, then using any appendage to strike. The fast dance steps are mandatory. The actual strike being the legs isn’t. Arms, or even a headbutt. Headlong Rush is a punch boosted by Iron Fist that can be used by Great Tusk, an elephant. Stupid things like that are what I'm trying to prevent. I want moves to be consistent regardless of language. You might be okay with an assumption, I'm not. By bringing it up in the video at all, it's obvious that I'm acknowledging it could be a kick, I just can't 100% confirm it. I'm completely comfortable taking the conservative approach and waiting until I'm sure. We have different mindsets, and that's okay. Again, this whole discussion can be circumvented entirely by just adding a new Water move that's explicitly a kick. Then everyone benefits regardless of if Aqua Step is exclusively a Dance, exclusively a kick, or is both a Dance and Kick.

Frankly, I’m surprised we haven’t had it. We got abilities for wind and cutting based moves this generation but not kicks. Shame. For Pokémon I’d give it to, outside of Hitmonlee and Tsareena, Lopunny, Dodrio (because ostrich If G Zapdos doesn’t get it) Hisuian Lilligant and, if we do get another legends game, a dark version of Blaziken. Pheromosa would’ve been a fun candidate but she’s an ultra beast. Lokix should get it. I mean, it’s a cricket that has a pair of battle legs. Toxicroak maybe because it’s a frog. A move for dark types like “Cruel Sweep” where the opponent falls into all of the entry hazards, would be fun. Due to a lot of dances, I’m surprised we don’t have a ballet themed kick for a fairy move. Drill stomp maybe as a steel kick?

I don't agree with the argument for stomp, but I can understand your rationale. But based on that rationale I would think that should translate to High Horsepower. Either way, yes something for kicks should be applied but this ability is lackluster when not coupled with diversity. I would change it to "Fancy Footwork" if a kicking move was used in battle, the speed or maybe evasion, goes up by 1 stage. It could maybe even give a +1 priority to kicking moves. Due to the extra reach and fast tempo.

You probably mean well with this comment, but I don't really know what you want me to say. Nearly everything you've had to say here has been explained in the video and in the video description. I hope you can see why I'd feel like you have a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose and goal of the video. - Read or listen to English and Japanese move descriptions for Stomp and High Horsepower. - I describe that Iron Sole is mid multiple times in the video. - The goal was to make an Iron Fist clone for kicking. Let's use an analogy. Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee are like Chocolate and Vanilla ice cream. They're counterparts. Despite being counterparts, Mint Chocolate (Iron Fist) exists in stores and Mint Vanilla (Iron Sole) is something I can't find. So I make a video about making a Mint Vanilla flavor to "complete the pair". Now imagine you come in and start talking about how Mint Vanilla is a lackluster flavor, and that you would change it to "Strawberry Cheesecake." You've missed the point of the video, the goal of the video. Regardless of how good Strawberry Cheesecake would be, the goal was to make a Mint Vanilla flavor. Do you get what I mean now? It's not a bad idea. It is just irrelevant to the goal and topic. Go make a video about "Fancy Footwork" and I'll absolutely watch it, though.

Only thing Hitmonchan has over his brothers is that he has 100% accurate coverage for Flying types with Thunder/Ice Punch, which are still significantly weaker than Hitmonlee’s Stone Edge. Hitmonchan also has far worse ability pool. Lee gets Unburden, which is miles better than Iron Fist, and Top gets Intimidate and Technician too.

And for kicks should be 30% tops. yeah the most powerfull kick has 90% accuracy but so do have the strongest "punches" which have 100 base power. And if 90% is too low just use jump kick which is still 100 base power and 95% accurate and with 30% boost would be 130 and not 150. a 150 bs move with 95% accuracy is too OP

Nah, there's plenty of times where I'll explain something ten times in the video and put it in the pinned comment. Then, someone will try to contest me in the comments about it when paying attention to the video or doing a quick Google search would nullify their whole argument. For example, right now, people are asserting that Aqua Step is a kick with no new compelling information. My stance was pretty clear in the rules section of the video and in the Aqua Step section of the video. From the info we were given, it can be done by kicking but also could be done without kicking. Since I'm not sure, I didn't include it as a kick. Telling me to assume it is a kick isn't giving new evidence. It's telling me to break my rules. Part of the rules was to not assume anything. Plus, if you look at the page for Aqua Step, it says it's already boosted by Dancer and is thus a Dancing move. Plus, at the end, I suggest adding a Water-type kicking move. I personally dont care either way, but I care about creating a quality video, so I don't want to make assumptions, and would like to report as close to the truth as I can, and admit any mistakes if I make them. So it feels weird to me when people seem ready to die on this hill about Aqua Step being a kick, when they don't really have a reason to do so other than fulfilling their own head canon. I think at the end of the day, people mean well, they're just passionate to the point of being blinded by their passion.
