For all the great actor talent, plus the director’s skill … Wayne really did CARRY the show. Watch it as many times as you can stand. He SHOULD have pulled down a second Oscar for lifetime achievement, of which this performance is archetypal… in fact, Taw Jackson is his lay-up to Rooster Cogburn two years later.🌵

Lomax (KD): mine hit the ground first, Taw Jackson (JW): mine was taller. Great line.
I enjoy a good well-acted and filmed classic western. When the cinematography is well-filmed. As well as the backgrounds and staging set-ups. Authenticity is what really balances out the portrayals.

After seeing your comment, I noticed that here 8:29 Douglas appears to step (left foot) onto a ramp as he approaches the bar to stand beside Wayne.

Just now, in the dark in this movie a very skinny horse, a grey, with stick out ribs did its best to walk on by when its rump was patted. I have never seen a skinny horse in any other John Wayne movie. I watch these movies because I love all thr beautiful horses. The skinny ones need to be in horsey rehab, not in front of a camera.

I must have watched this film a dozen times and it wasn't until today I noticed one of Hollywood's goofs. Not only is there no magazine in the Gatling gun, when he first test fires it, there is not enough room between where the magazine goes and the roof of the turret to even put one on.
