All the story and films about Columbus are totally false ! The Portuguese knew about South America a very long time before Columbus started his voyage. They even had trading posts in what is known today as Caracas, Venesuela. And that is where Columbus wanted to go as he had obtain stolen charts, one of the most precious and secretly guarded maritime Portuguese thing in those days. So he knew exactly where to go. BUT ! one secret the Portugues never added to their charts is the winds streaking along the East cost of the America. Columbus got caught and that's why he ended up on a Caribean Island off the North American coast. Columbus Never put a foot on American soil as after month on the Island, he was sent back to Spain (empty handed) .
