one word of caution. If you have any allergies esp. hay fever, honeysuckle may be a bad choice. Stand next to blooming bushes for 15 minutes & you'll know if you are sensitive to it. Walking past the local college on way home from high school I learned the hard way. Honeysuckle bushes all around the campus & I could barely breathe after 10 mins.

In NC there is a bounty on Cleveland and Bradford Pears. The state will give you 5 native trees for every Bradford/Cleveland you take down. They are non-native, invasive trees and split or break really easily in storms. The blooms smell like rotten fish. But, developers love to put them in because they are cheap and grow fast. ☠️

You could plant a huge amount of honeysuckle to keep the deer away from your plants at the JL Ranch. You may find they will go after your plants so plant (away from the other plants) some honeysuckle. Deer love it. If you plant something for them they will stay away from the plants you don't want to share with them. I know you don't have plants there yet but when and if you do it's not a bad idea to plant for nature and you! I love how enthusiastic you are! I love gardening too. I've been gardening for about thirty years or so.

@ruthanderson175810 ай бұрын
Just a suggestion - you may want to look into whether it's a good idea to have a weeping willow next to your pond (especially at LHL) - their roots go deep and they suck up a lot of water and with possible droughts every summer, they could deplete the water in the pond(s) and that's not a good thing. Catalpa trees have the most beautiful flowers in the spring that look very similar to orchids - the tree can get very large and when covered in flowers looks incredible. Columbine are gorgeous and are perennials.

You mentioned the red bud trees & yes Redbud ILL is a place I know. When I lived outside of St Louis & drove into to work everyday on I-44, in the spring their was a hill that was across from Lone Elk Park, that was full of blooming redbuds! It was beautiful & I just wanted to pull over & stare for awhile! Dogwood trees were also plentiful in rural Mo. I had a snowball bush & a lilac bush & the scent was amazing when they bloomed! You need to plant milkweed so the Monarch butterflies will have food to eat when they migrate! I remember milkweed & honeysuckle from when I was a kid. I can't wait to see what you bought & where you plant it!

Wow, what beautiful plants they have. A word of caution with a willow tree, do not plant near your septic or water lines, they like a lot of water and the roots will try to get into the septic lines or water lines. I think they are a beautiful tree but can cause issues, but by the front pond at the J&L should be okay. You were just scouting to see if it was worth the time for Stephanie to go to. LOL

I just posted the same warning about willows. I got a pussy willow bush from Lowe's for a dollar. It was just a pathetic stick. That sucker grew to be over 8 ft tall and 8 ft wide. It was beautiful but I had no idea it would go after my water/sewer lines as it is a moisture hog. I didn't want to remove it but I had to. So it is not just weeping willow trees but any willow needs to be looked at side-eyed.
