I've had mine since it was introduced and it was always known as the sleeper 90/2 apo. Every time I go to sell it, I shoot with it, fall in love all over again and keep it. I've had it through an M6, M246 and an SL2-S. Great lens.

Don`t have an Elmarit, but Summicron pre APO, version 2 will be about the same. As for focus I developed a system where I determined the distance for portrait head shot and focused on the eye catchlights. For subsequent shots put the RF patch on the eye and move until they merge, recompose as required, expose. Works every time and almost as good as autofocus speed.

I have the pre APO Summicron as well and prefer this lens to the Elmarit. The Summicron has a beautiful rendering, that does some magic to the skin of the models. It is sharp and soft in a good way, next to no need for any retouching. Yes, it is a bigger, but I use it for portraits, only. Thus, a little more size and weight makes almost no difference. The price is almost the same, at least I was able to get my copy for about 700 EUR.

It’s indeed a great lens and still affordable. Nice thing is that it shares the 46mm filtersize with the 50 Lux. Make sure you get version II (build between 1990-2007) and not version I (1959-1974). The latter is less sharp and has a much more ‘vintage’ look. Nice alternative is the Summarit 90 (2.5 or 2.4 depending on the year). Pre-owned these are priced and also perform mid-way between the Elmarit and the APO-Summicron. Great options.

I had the Summarit but I do like this Elmarit better. The rendering is much more appealing to me. If you want that clinically sharpe look, the Summarit and Apo are the best choice. And yes, the version two is the one to go for.

Years ago I used the 90 Elmarit for studio portraiture. Sold it abandoning analoque photography. Shooting now with M 10 I bought the Voigtlander 90 mm. tack sharp and perfect replacement for 90 elmarit.

Beautiful model. I used two Leica M3 's as part of my Wedding gear during the 1960s /1970s. One of my two lenses was the remarkable 35mm f1.4 Summilux (or it could have been Summicron). The lens delivered exquisite skin tones and although the focal length wasn't the compulsory portrait glass, it hardly mattered as the images were what I wanted and not what other amateurs were telling me that I should be aiming for. The smaller f3 5 35mm lens was an early 1960s vintage with a tiny front element but capable of producing amazing images. I also found that my minolta rokkor lenses delivered very similar image characteristics as the Leica lenses, which gave me a less expensive system to use as backup.

Thank you for sharing. My go to for portraits has always been the 50mm and recently the 35 has come into play as well. But for those who just have to have that longer focal length - this is a very viable option. On a side note, I would really love to shoot with one of the Minolta’s some day.

Just a little focus trick, for photographing talent, when manually focusing. If your subject moves slightly forward or backward, instead of spinning the lens, just sway your body forward or backward with them.

I have a 90 cron pre asph and 90 summarit, and the summarit wins for a clean but not clinical look, not unlike the elmarit. The pre asph cron has a great more vintage look though!

The latest Elmarit 90 is awesome. Been on kind of a lookout for a black one that's been 6 bit converted already. BTW re the shirt thing I have the opposite problem, unless I buy from Japanese brands in order to not be a tent in the middle I have to have my chest in a vice. Somehow I think that there are no clothes that actually fit anyone in this world (minus tailored stuff).

Nice shots, nice model (full of charm) and good light. Who needs more. About the lens, there are plenty of good and fast 85-90mm for portraits as these lenses are not difficult to do nowadays so I am not sure of the advantage of an old Leica elmarit f2.8. In manual lens you can find cheap Nikon or perhaps more rare Contax lenses in Y/C or in QBM mount. I think they have nothing to envy to this Leica lens.

There are plenty of portrait lenses. This particular video was about a lens for the M mount Leica camera. It’s special because of its rendering and price as a Leica lens.
