Amazing critique of Maudi's art work and life. Sarah's musical talents are beautiful and poignant, what a nice addition to the Maud Lewis Collection discussion. Thank you!!!

She was deeply moving. What I find extraordinary is that she retained her innocence, her child-like purity in the face of great hardship. I'm sure she'd been mocked and often ill-treated. She had to endure lifelong arthritis and poverty. Yet there are no shadows, no intimations of darkness in her paintings. And I don't sense repression or denial on her part. She was simply pure, a beautiful soul, without an iota of rancor or bitterness. How many people do you know who, not even suffering half her hardships, are still embittered or angry or carry some residue of resentment? I'm certainly one of them. In fact, a lot could be going for some of them, and yet they're still irked by something or other... There's no shortage of people who became successful, widely known, even though they were dirt-poor, people who pushed on through notwithstanding terrible circumstances. It's one thing to display fierce determination or willpower, to assume full responsibility, and so forth. Maud had some of that. But I can just barely wrap my head around the fact that she remained untainted by so much abuse and ill-treatment. The vast majority of people would, even if not quite dominated by anger or other shadows, almost invariably lose their innocence (or whatever portion of innocence they have). Maud DIDN'T.

A fellow Canadian visiting the desert introduced me to Maud Lewis. I'd never heard of her, having lived in California for decades and had not awakened to art previously. Maud's work is genius and total delight. It is deceptively sophisticated - an almost mysterious contrast to her apparent naivete. She is as much an inspiration for living as for painting. Sarah Milroy's narration - erudite, personal, natural - is so refreshing. As is Sarah Slean''s offering. I've always wanted to be my version of a Maud and am well on my way - this sure helps! Thank you.

I appreciate her Nova Scotia seascapes. They're wonderful reflections of sail, soaring birds, and sparkling water.

Hello,Many thanks for your posting.Happily as a boy,I visited Maud and Everet in the early 60s,when my parents offered Maud some painting supplies. Maud kindly painted a stone gallet for me of a white trotting horse ,garlanded with green boughers and red flowers. After hearing your commentary, this would probably be a rare one off.Too,I bought ,at that time,a painting of Evert 's that he undersold on the hush hush, s1ying that they were just as good as "hers". Wishes for your continued success. PS I was fortunate to have attended class with Arthur Lismer and wonder if you might not apply your talents specifically to his life and work. Here in Switzerland, the group of seven is a universal unknown, and I wonder wouldn't an exhibition prove profitable?

The house is in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, not a replica. (There is a replica in Digby).

Its quite funny how her paintings are used to make lots of money now she passed, yet when she was still alive people didnt want to pay more money for her paintings, not even at a reasonable price.

She died of malnutrition?? It's been publicized that she died from pneumonia. How could she have been poor to the point of not having enough food when she became somewhat of a celebrity from being on the news as well as getting a request for a painting from the president. Her paintings sold like crazy & she lived modestly in a tiny shack.. Unless hubby spent it all... Someone needs to do a fact check.

it was hard for them to cook and go to the store as they got older and older. they also preferred to keep the same simply lifestyle they always lived together so she probably just ate what they always had even as she got older and her needs changed. maybe her medical conditions impacted her eating/feeding abilities and she just couldnt get enough in. this is just from web md but Malnutrition in older adults can be caused by a variety of factors, including loss of appetite, lack of ability to chew and swallow, and increased use of prescription medications. Other risk factors include depression, dementia, chronic diseases, and lack of access to optimally nutritious food, whether due to food insecurity or lack of ability to prepare and/or shop for food.
