I'm watching this because I don't really know 1000% how to move my character's arms. Maybe I should look at something else, like an Idle Animation tutorial or something but meh, I'll watch this first and then get over there if this doesn't help. So, first things first. New Sprite window is basically the setting for how the entire Aseprite model will be set out as. Canvas, Toolbar, two things that I constantly make good use of. I don't really use the context bar that much, maybe it'll help make the Arm editing easier. Oh nvm, it's basically something that works with the Toolbar, yeah, I use it to size up and down my toolbrush. And of course I use my palette a ton, I constantly have to swap between colors, I like to think that everyone who ever took an art class knows how to swap colors and has swapped colors before. Oh, maybe RGB would be much more helpful for my character than the stock option. Then again, yeah, the palette helping to keep a pre-selected color in your toolkit there is honestly pretty nice. Oh, so that's how Layers work. Maybe it'll be helpful if I want to layer over gLiTcH expressions and if I want to create a subtle effect where one emotion is hiding anoother emotion and I want to reference it or something like that. Meh, I think I can scrap shading altogether and do the job myself, but it is an interesting option to keep in the backpocket.

Watching this video was informative and stressful; I picked up Aseprite today to see if it'd be better/faster than my old art software. The only issue is I'm left-handed, and none of these shortcuts are in convenient locations for how I draw. I usually use those shortcut buttons he discussed, but my tablet program doesn't notice that Aseprite exists. I recognize that I could change every shortcut to accommodate my situation, but A) that would take a lot of time and troubleshooting, and B) there are fewer keys on the right-hand side (the hand I'd be using for shortcuts) of the keyboard than on the left. Excellent video, though; I'm glad I found it, regardless of my issues.

Oh my gosh, it has built in support for pixel aspect ratio! That is perfect! I could never figure out a way to do that with Krita. Incidentally I don't know of any game engines that support it in displaying graphics. I am currently working on programming a game engine as a hobby, and one of the features I have built into it is control over pixel aspect ratio. If I can get the hang of Aseprite this will be so convenient when I am actually creating a game using my engine.
@justaway_of_the_samurai2 жыл бұрын
Update: After compiling and using Aseprite, I am still really satisfied with this feature. But the feature is unfortunately not very customizable in a user-friendly way. It only supports 3 ratios out of the box: 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1. The SNES graphics on the other hand display all pixels in a 7:6 ratio, which obviously doesn't fall into any of those 3 defaults. In order to support the 7:6 ratio or any other custom ratio, you have to actually go into the "data" folder in your Aseprite installation and modify the "new_sprite.xml" and "sprite_properties.xml" files and manually create new pixel aspect ratios in each. This isn't too difficult, and I managed to find a guide on it online. But this is still probably a bit hard for a non-technical user to do. It might be helpful if there was just a "Custom Ratio" option in the UI so that the user can add custom aspect ratios directly. Although, this might not be a very high priority to implement because most users would be satisfied with a 1:1 ratio.
@justaway_of_the_samurai2 жыл бұрын
I am really looking forward to learning more about this tool and using it for my game development. It looks like it has so many advantages over alternative software like Krita when it comes to pixel art.
