Darren Barnet is mixed raced with only 1/4 japanese, but his mother, despite being half Swedish, was raised culturally as japanese and he even knows how to speak the language. That’s why his character in Never Have I Ever became Japanese-American, because he was speaking in japanese with an AD on set. Before that he was meant to just be “Paxton Hall” white boy shit. So at least he has a strong relationship with his Asian heritage and isn’t just going around like “oh yeah I’m 1/9 blablabla” just to justify being ~exotic looking~ for Hollywood (cause we know that happens a lot)

@yulana9903 жыл бұрын
@@tamagothchic It's a comedy movie, not a psycho-analytical look into the desperation of a woman searching for love. The movie also literally mentioned the long distance thing, with her girlfriend forcing her to change the app into long distance range cause she wasn't a fan of it and wanted someone close by, but then ended up liking this guy on the phone and flying there. And if she's asking for a "perfect guy and true love" then wanting something long term who you're both physically and mentally attracted to is a given, that is very heavily implied with the true love and perfect guy part, so would marriage if she's interested in it as again she wanted her true love. I don't get why the movie needs to clarify all of those things when most of them are clearly implied in the story or wording, or just aren't important. Like why does a comedy romance need to tell the audience whether or not she wants true love "Or she just hated being alone"? That also isn't even something most people can answer, as its VERY hard to figure out the difference, and often just go hand in hand. You can be super lonely AND want true love at once, especially in this day and age where most people feel lonely. Either way, most of your questions were answered or implied in the story already, and most aren't important for a comedy either way. This isn't a big romance movie or a tv show with seasons where they can make sure all the drama and mental agony is in there, it's just a fun watch when you're bored and under the blanket and wanna laugh a bit with a cute ending :) Not everything needs to be overly analytical.
@LoveK13 жыл бұрын
@@yulana990 I keep saying the same thing. Why does every movie have to be deep and meaningful. Some movies are just a fun watch and a thing to relax with. I also really don’t like how people are making fun of women who are eager to find a romantic partner. Maybe she just wants a romantic partner to spend her time with(which has different elements to it than friendship.) Maybe she really wants to give birth to her own kids and as you get older it gets harder so she has limited time to find her partner to do that with. Maybe she just really wants to be a wife (which is a perfectly acceptable aspiration though people keep telling women otherwise and making fun of them). People keeping making fun of women who don’t want to be alone by saying they don’t know how to be. Newflash: Most people don’t WANT to be alone. It’s not that they don’t know how to be, they just don’t want it. Wanting desperately to be a wife and mother should not make you a target for ridicule. I’ve noticed that even progressives tend to treat women the same way they say conservatives do. They see being a wife and mother as unimportant in the grand scheme of things. But if you’re all about choice than people should be allowed to choose that path without being mocked.

about the romantic chemistry thing idk i think movies in general have this weird idea that you have to be totally in love or smth to be in a relationship. they did hang out mostly as friends, but that's not a bad basis of a relationship imo. movies tend to overexaggerate romance which leads to why so many ppl leave the second they realise the person doesn't live up to their dreams so i think its nice to see a relationship that wasn't overly romantic, cus most relationships start off as hanging out and just being friendly, there's more than one relationship type the die hard thing tho... i felt the eyeroll from the bottom of my soul

Ye especially since that’s been the message of the movie all along. So many people look for the perfect person, that they just settle for a person perfect on paper. But people that fall head over heels in the beginning often fall based on looks when it really shouldn’t be the main factor. Only some are lucky that it’s compatible enough on a long term. She basically threw all of her morals overboard for that Tag guy to like her when the only thing she knew was that he was hot. But love should be a lot deeper than that. Falling in love should be a process and the chemistry and attraction starts to increase with that. Explosive stuff has never been healthy.

I decided to watch this movie on a whim and was genuinely surprised by how much I liked it and that it actually made me laugh a few times 😃 But I had the same issue at the end where even though I was rooting for them to get together and the way they did it with the signs was a cute callback, I did not really feel any chemistry between them. They might as well have been good friends, wish there had been a few more obvious falling for each other moments.
@withcindy3 жыл бұрын

I understand what you mean, but I did like that they held back a bit. Instead of showing that she fell head over heels in love with him, I thought the message was that they could start from an honest beginning. I think that's really sweet.

I felt the exact same way! Wanted them together (because I’m such a sucker for friends-to-lovers) but they didn’t have any romantic chemistry. Had they picked a different actress or made Natalie’s character less one-dimensional, I would’ve rooted for them even more than I did.

I really like your end question about depicting the difference between romantic attraction and friendship--it's a hot topic in the asexual community since we aren't typically going to have a physical urge when close with someone. I watched this movie only because of the rare opportunity to see an Asian male lead, even knowing that I generally hate romantic comedies AND Christmas movies. I was surprised that I actually loved it. HOWEVER, it still has the same glaring issues as most romantic comedies. The overall is as always, and this message is almost always directed at women, lower your standards. He doesn’t need to good looking, he doesn’t need to be financially stable, and (according to this movie) he doesn’t need to have his own place. Lower your standards and you’ll find someone. That message is toxic and disgusting.
@esbeelavallee25683 жыл бұрын
But he was sweet, was helping and understood her fears, he knew her well, was down to do things for her like stealing newspapers early in the morning and I think those are high standards to look for. Empathy and being sweet and caring are super important. Not just looks and financial stability.
@mel8183 жыл бұрын
the message here is not "lower your standards", it's "question your standards and know what really matters to you". At the beginning she ran away at the smallest sign of imperfection, like her boss said, she had an ideal of what she wanted but never really gave herself the oportunity to actually get to know someone. She didn't settle for him, she authentically fell for him. She finally found out what was important to her.

I watched this with a friend the other day, and we had to keep telling ourselves catfishing is bad. I think it was because this particular cast had good chemistry with each other, the characters (catfishing aside) were likeable, and the actors were great. I loved both Nina and Jimmy in this movie, and I loved the Asian-American representation that wasn’t so on the nose and stereotypical. Yes, the movie concept/plot definitely wasn’t original (see How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days or While You Were Sleeping), but I think it wasn’t executed better than those two. I dunno, I feel like it was one of those holiday rom coms that was cliche and problematic but still enjoyable.

Something I learned last week: if y’all (women who are into men) are ever doubting your attractiveness or are too shy to ask people out: go to a salsa social or beginner partner dance class. Guys just come up to you and ask you to dance and it’s super fun. I was trash at dancing cause it was my first class but the dancer dudes just spun me around and don’t give af if you can’t dance. Go for it! (It would probably be harder to dance with someone who identifies as the same gender as you though because you’ve both learned the same part and now can’t partner easily unless one of you learns the other part)

Its a mindy kaling show and follows an indian-american teen, Devi, trying to rise up the social ladder; from nerdy, undateable teen to popular hot girl w/ boyfriend alongside her geeky friends. Devi goes thru the usual teen phases but also deals with her cultural identity and overcoming trauma after losing the parent she felt closest to. Its endearing in its own way.

i'm so glad that you made this video because i just watched this last night and i have so many thoughts! i watched it with my husband, and he's chinese and i'm white so that was an extra layer of entertainment value 😂 basically, i think jimmy being charismatic and the jokes being mostly pretty solid is what made the movie. it had some imperfections but i laughed consistently. the biggest issue i felt was that 1) josh and natalie's romantic chemistry wasn't built up enough and 2) in my mind josh didn't really reckon fully with lying not just about the catfishing but about getting engaged. i think josh and natalie had a good foundation upon which to build a romantic relationship, but it felt like there was a scene or two missing to transition from "we have good friend chemistry" to "i want to suck your face." and it sucks because i think they *could have* made that work. it wasn't like harry and ginny in hp where they just felt like they had zero chemistry no matter what. and then with jimmy not reckoning with his lies fully... i get why they had natalie do the confession to everyone at the party. this was her story and it was important to her arc for her to come clean with her part in the deception. but it felt like it still probably should have been josh who came clean. his deception was worse--he was closer to everyone that they were lying to, after all.

No it really irritated me that it was Natalie who ended up doing the big confession scene and that it was her who caught the slack while Josh was the "victim" at the end because this all started because he was the one who catfished her?? I consider a "Soulmate" to be very flexible and something established alongside reincarnation-and a Soulmate is a person we've been close allies/friends with for multiple lifetimes, and is not exclusive to just one Soulmate. This expands the concept past romance and allows for a wide variety of companions, who arent somehow "incomplete"
