As a bit of a history fan myself, I am quick to remind people who complain of my pipes and cigars that this stinking weed is indeed why they are free citizens. 😆 Not many ask for clarification. Those who do will get an explanation for those who don't will have their snide looks met with my very own. Followed, of course, by a smile with a tip of my hat and a "have a lovely day." Thanks for the video, Alan, good to see you again.

My father carried two pipes, a bulldog and a straight apple and Half and Half through out WWII in the Pacific Front and as he told me it was his only time of solitude he had for 3 years was when he could sit back late in the day and have a pipe and thank God he survived another day. The dangers of tobacco consumption have been greatly overexagerated. Especially cigar, pipe, snuff consumption. Easy political point scoring, focusing carcinogenic blame from other everyday substances and indescribable volumes of revenue generation are likely the reasons behind the continuing concerted efforts for what will one day be prohibition.

@@dr6278 I call it the Story of the Scythe. Basically, if you ask anyone today, they'd tell you the scythe was the best technology of the time, but was replaced by motorized contraptions because the newer stuff was better. While that sounds good, the truth is anything but. If you look around KZbin for videos of people using the scythe, you quickly see that they are as fast, or faster, than a string trimmer. And they can even give a push mower a run for its money, often winning the race. But, years ago, people were convinced that the scythe was nowhere near as good as the newfangled gadgetry coming out of the big city. Even if we discount the importance of continuing time-honored traditions, the widespread use of the Scythe was far better for the environment because they are much simpler to make and take up fewer materials. The handles can be made from any reasonably straight sapling, and the blade is a very small amount of quality iron. This is something a small local shop could make for the local customers. Or, you can have a huge heavy string trimmer that takes up more room, weighs more, and has to be manufactured in a factory on the other side of the world. The 2nd Order and 3rd Order Effects are hidden, for the most part, because they didn't happen immediately and with great fanfare. Today, we're left wondering how many millions of barrels of oil we've burned up just to make all those weed whackers and push mowers. Or, how much time we've lost using them because we were misled into thinking they were the faster option. How many local jobs were lost because local craftsmen couldn't produce these complicated pieces of equipment at a competitive rate? As a practicing blacksmith, I could probably forge a blade, knowing that they were forged for eons before me, and I could hire a woodworker to make the handles. But my shop could never make a string trimmer or push mower. Think of the millions spent not only buying the modern machines, but the noise pollution they put out even as they belch out gobs of exhaust. Our weekends are filled with the screeching as whole battalions of "lawncare workers" go yet again to battle in the neighborhoods, fighting valiantly against the onslaught of weeds. How much plastic has gone into the landfills when the cheap machines finally die and folks realize it's cheaper to simply buy a new one rather than having the old thing repaired? Thankfully, there's something of a Renaissance in the use of the Scythe. If you search KZbin, you'll find hundreds of videos where average people use the wonderful tools to maintain their yards in an efficient manner. Like with the Tobacco Industry, folks didn't think twice about listening to the snakes in the grass who condemned it. As with the war on tobacco, folks long ago got twisted up by the snake oil salesmen who swore the new machines were better. Just as folks never thought about the farmers growing tobacco and how they'd be hurt by all these attacks, folks in the Times Before never stopped to think about the local craftsmen they were helping to put out of work with every purchase of the loud machines that'd now cut their grass. In both cases, the people didn't 'tend their garden'. They never thought of the ramifications beyond the promise of saving money or time, of things being easier for them. They never stopped to really consider the issue because they were too tied up in their feelings. And, to be fair, one side has had great Storytellers who could get the masses fired up and happy to change. The other side didn't. At 50 years of age, I only recently learned about the scythe's abilities, and that's after a lifetime of working as a smith and studying the history of the trades. I always assumed that the modern machines were better, faster, or more efficient even if they were loud and wasteful. The only reason that changed was because KZbin allowed people to be their own Storytellers and share what they'd learned with a wider audience. I guess the real lesson here is that the Storytellers are critical. Throughout history, we see that the Storytellers were central to societies, helping to keep alive the traditions and cultures of the people by explaining WHY they did things, not just the HOW of things. The Storytellers inspired the local people to take pride in the little differences that set them apart, and warned of the dangers of listening to the snakes in the grass who always promised glory and gold if only you'd side with them, give up your ways, follow their path.....

Most points I tip my hat to. However I do remember an economic scare in the 1700s, where tobacco almost killed the colonial economy. I see similar parallels with the classless cannabis industry growing rampant. And the tax revenue to be collected will be far less than what the state wants, guaranteed. The state is an addict of major proportions and will never get its fixed when enabled.

It seems to always come back to anti South sentiment. They despise everything we have built and cultivated from statues to political sentiment and lifestyle. What really gets me about the professional hand wringing over pipes and cigars are the sanctimonious and dramatic "warning" labels that sometimes mar the packaging and detract from the artwork. I recently watched a video where a fellow visited a quaint tobacconist in London. The plastic pouch his tobacco was put in was one giant "smoking kills" label. I cannot stand the fabricated notion that people are dying from being pipe and/or cigar smokers.

i don't smoke but i can think of worse things to do at least its not like alcohol that makes you drunk. but the people that want to ban it are hypocrites since they smoke a lot of weed and want to legalise all drugs yes all of them. a lot of people of my age remember their parents smoking a lot and think it was annoying so now they think smoking weed in instead of tobacco is rebellious while its really not. i do think weed should be legal but not the other drugs .and if you ban tobacco the entire point of legalising weed is pointless. because they want it do this so the mafia loses some of its power. but they will just sell tobacco instead of weed in this potential future scenario and become even richer
