"AUDIBLE ADSB Radio". Weird, because it looks like it's a VHF comms SDR. If you've ever tried to listen to ADSB at 1090, you can't really pick much out of the noise :). What is the advantage to having this device over say, a regular scanner that everyone has been using for the past 30-40 years?

I think what is good about this gives option to mute tailor what you want to hear, everything or priority channels. Just my thoughts plus going forward there will be more options. Sees like it's going to be very small and lightweight.

Yeah its just about COM, so putting ADSB in the title may not pull in the right audience. Cool stuff.

It's a VHF receiver that isn't capable of receiving ADS-B. It's too bad James didn't shut down the host when he mischaracterized this, as on the Facebook feed some actually think it's a ADS-B replacement. At the 23:10 mark, James does tell the host he is working on a real ADS-B receiver.

I guess I missed how ADSB plays into this. The SCARP appears to simply be an 8-channel scanning receiver which has no ADSB functionality. I did hear him say that he's looking into a better way of using ADSB, but it sounds like a separate project. The title of the video had me thinking that SCARP would use ADSB to filter out any communications that weren't in your vicinity or perhaps tune to frequencies that were in your vicinity, but I didn't hear anything like that. Did I miss it?

Probably using the ADSB term for all the plebs that use FR24... However, you're not going to get those people to build an SDR receiver and even come close to learning how to use a RX, Arduino, etc.

I believe he means that the (near) simultaneous listening to all nearby COM frequencies provides you with an awareness that mimics ADSB

One comment to James, no need to wait for GA certification. Just put some Velcro on the back of it, stick it to the panel, and you can use it today (after checking for interference issues). Just make sure the LO doesn't radiate too much.

When I saw the episode title my first impression was "Oh great, ADS-B for visually impaired pilots!" After watching the video I'm still scratching my head... The device is basically an extraction of the AM aircraft portiion of a Bearcat Scanner with front panel programmable buttons assigned to aircart channels. The display characters are way to small for someone to read while scanning the panel or to directly associate push buttons with channels. I aplaude James efforts to assist experimental & general aviation aircraft but I don't see this as any kind of game changer.

Sounds very interesting - I'd want it to allow a remote head - one radio, control it from either the front or rear cockpit of a tandem aircraft. FYI - you also need FCC certification for the transmitter. Connection/interface with GRT EFIS is a plus!

Made a scanner? Functionally, I don't see what's that different... The form factor is the most interesting feature here, IMO

I agree. I see a big future for downsized and integrated avionics of all kinds. It should save us a lot of weight, a lot of money, and offer much improved reliability and performance. FAA is trailing too far behind, which is making safety too expensive.

@@101jtag careful what you wish for. FAA offloaded the oversight of safety self-certification to Boeing. How did that turn out? When you allow manufacturers and designers to self-police, the results will be predictably bad for safety (but good for quarterly corporate profits.)

This is the proper way to do product development. Too many "engineers ' try to design things all the time without any thought of actually asking the future users what they might like or dislike . Include the end user early in the design phase to help massively reduce development cost.
