@@Cribbo Nah. The problem with paper for this is that it's: 1) too light; 2) too close to food for animals; 3) have some nasty chemicals used for it. So, the paper will just fly away from the desired spots with strong wind, be eaten by animals thinking that it's funny grass and possibly pollute the soil. That's especially true of the Bible paper that from my experience tends to be even thinner than regular paper, because it's a massive book that is mass produced to infinity. Edit: maybe you hose it as you put it down quickly... But then, industrial paper has a harder time decomposing compared to wood chips.

This is for William: You can use the wood chips and till them into the top inches of the soil, but it'll take a couple years till they break down into soil themselves. I would suggest, if you want it to happen faster, buying some topsoil/compost to bring in and mix with it. Though its faster because your skipping the composting part yourself, that means its more expensive. Clay would work, but it hardens and compacts too much to be very usable for grass, and it turns into a muddy mess when it rains, though some of it mixed in would be helpful for moisture retention and soil electrolyte gradients (plants need electrolytes too!) My ideal yard would be one that I've tilled an equal mix of sand/clay/compost into with the wood chips. You have the clay already it seems though! (really fine, dusty sand is technically clay) I'm a biologist who specializes in plants if you ever want to DM me for any advice about soil health or growing anything!

This is all good advice. Here's some more: buy topsoil and mulch by the truckload. contact a lumber yard. Do not buy bags from a big box store. Bag mulch is overpriced inferior product, and 9/10 times is moldy.

I have seen the usefulness of a shredder. Cover the ground around plants with mulch, and immediately, you need to water less often. The added bonus is that it will make the ground loose. When you put mulch every year, it's crazy how soft it become.

I live in the inverse, my property has pottery consistency clay, and some people say that I should have added sand to break that up; however, that negatively impacts our ability to grow native species as well as our garden. Instead I went to a soil treatment plant during their slow season and put about 100 tons of recyclables (this is the step before material gets turned into compost) into the soil for free since they needed to get more space. I also spoke to the electrical company that was trimming trees from the power lines and told them that they could dump their wood chips into our meadow if they wanted. I got probably another 20 tons of woodchips. Mixing all of that into the soil has been madly helpful in breaking up our clay. I would imagine it probably would help with your sand too.

Also adding larger particles or coasts would increase water infiltration and make the soil feel different, but primarily adding either plants and or an organic cover.
