I've learned that in Northern climates (I'm in Idaho), this dead grass buildup is a huge problem in most lawns. Not only is there more Winter die off, but night temperatures here often dip below 55F, where the Microbes that usually break down this material slip into dormancy. That makes bagging preferable to mulching until well into Summer. The Sun Joe has been my secret weapon.

The tow behind models for riding lawn mowers are great for big yards. I moved two years ago to a house with roughly 20,000 square feet of grass. I bought a used riding lawn mower and later a few tow behind attachments including an aerator and dethatcher with a few bags of sand as weights. With only a year of aerating and dethatching (fall and spring), I’m getting great results.

Thanks for the video, really informative. The other video you did on soil softener was good as well. I followed the instructions on the bottle and it made a world of difference. I was able to aerate the front and back yard with a hand tool in about 90 minutes, 30 minutes of that was taking a soda break and talking to my wife, so really about an hour. All I did after that was fertilize and the front and back yards are filling in the thin areas on their own and forcing out the few weeds I had. One more thing, the Groundskeeper II is a great alternative to a thatching rake, plus it won't kill your back. Same time frame, front and back yard in about 90 minutes including soda break. Thanks again.

I relate to the "work out" for the detaching or removing dead grass... I made a raking machine and call it a "Hard Raker"... It is nothing fancy, but it worked very well. I made couple of videos for it on my channel. My channel is all about the projects I'm working on and most of them are lawn care related. It is nice to put the videos out for friends and family at once as opposed to explaining each project many times :)...

Thank you for sharing your knowledge Ryan. I went from having no grass to living on an acreage that is all lawn. I'm glad I found your channel. It's a little more challenging to find similar products as far as herbicides and fertilizers go in Canada, but at leas now I feel more confident taking care of this lawn now that I have more knowledge on lawn care. P.S I don't know why, but there is something SO satisfying about dethatching. Thank you again!

I have the same Greenworks de-thatcher and it works great. I use it every year in late August as I clean up the lawn just prior to fall aeration and overseeding. It can be very aggressive so I only use it on thicker areas of the lawn and manually rake out the thatch and debris in areas where the turf is thinner and more susceptible to damage from the machine.

Hey Ryan! I love the channel and the content you put out, thank you. I'm in Calgary, Canada so the weather is kind of similar to yours (but a lot more extreme). I've been doing a lot of research and it seems like liquid fertilizers are a lot cheaper to use than granular. Currently this is what I use: Scott's Were prevent as soon as the snow is gone (after lightly raking), then when I aerate ( around mid May ) I use Scott's 911, then mid June I use Scott's 30-0-3, and then July and August I use a liquid lawn food (Sea kelp) , then in September I aerate again and of needed I use Scott's fall fertilizer) and then right around the first snow, I put down Scott's Weed prevent again. Now the cost of all of that here in Canada is pretty high, and I am looking to replace all of those (if possible) with a more economical option and I am willing to buy in bulk and import it from the US in order to save money. What would you recommend to replace each one of the granular ones? (I think I will continue to use the Sea kelp)

Hey Ryan. For years my lawn was so thin. But it's 4 acres of grass, and it never gets irrigation...only rain water. Looking over the top of it, you can definitely see bald spot. Thisyear (2021) is wayyy different. Here in Michigan we've experienced soooooo much rain, that my lawn is thick now. For the last two years I've hit it with 100% nitrogen to green it up, but this year, same nitrogen, and sooo much rain it's like I reseeded it. It's TTTF. Also, this year I'm cutting at 3" or more height now. so the blades are greener. The lawn looks great. Next year it probably will get back to normal. I think most lawns just need a good amount of rain to turn it around, and cutting taller. This fall I will reseed with a slitseeder, more TTTF.

Ryan, I was pricing them earlier today, $129. It has 3 setting for depth, where had you set? Yesterday I happened on an all natural solution that, I gather, breaks down the cellulose. I've got a huge issue with matted dead grass that's killing the lawn. What are your thoughts on that, snake oil?? Per tour earlier vid I applied Tenacity yesterday to kill a bunch of, what I believe is, yellow nutsedge and Creeping Charlie out back. That dye makes a mess! Oh, a good rake costs about as much as the electric dethatcher.
