So you have Japanese Beetles this year because you had grubs last year. Did you notice any bald spots in your yard. That is the grubs planting eggs in your grass. Then the following year the beetles come. There is a Bayer Product you can put on the plant to keep the beetles from devouring it. Also treat the grass with grub stuff.

Beautiful garden!
@TracysHomeGarden3 жыл бұрын
Yup, I treated my lawns for grubs & larvae every year. However, we live in the city and our lots are side-by-side….the beetles could be coming from nearby lawns or the ravine on the other side of our street. I think there is no way of escaping- unless I stop planting plants that have strong scent to attract them? Which is unfortunate and not possible. 😳🥺 Thank you MsAshmomma! 💚🙏🪴

Wonderful! And you are an absolute BOSS transplanting those boxwoods and roses! I just planted a 1 gallon Oso Easy rose (Italian Ice) this morning, and I was sweating buckets and called it a day. I’m a total wimp lol…but my backyard soil is really heavy clay so it’s no fun digging and trying to amend soil. Oh, last week I got my Banana cream daisies, plus another pale yellow frilly daisy called Ice Cream Dream. They’re both small plants but happily blooming now in the front yard bed, and I’m excited to see them grow like yours eventually. You have such a great eye for putting in plants with different foliage and textures - really inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing. Warm regards from the Chicago burbs.

Oh….I love the Oso Easy rose as well. I saw them at the nursery recently. Moving plants in the heat and surrounded with thick planting is no fun…😁😁….did you see my hair was sweaty around the nape? Lol…I was afraid it would show on video and people would be disgusted by it dripping down my nape. 😂. Another reason why I had my hair braided away from my neck and back. I felt like a “wimp” moving those huge thorny roses too! It was poking and scraping me all over…forearm, fingers, etc….it was no fun moving roses. Banana Cream daisies…..they just started blooming for me today. The daisies will be full plants in no time. Happy gardening Anita!

Love your crystal blue salvia. So pretty. I bought different kind of salvia from Lowe's, but not as pretty as yours. I will have to look for crystal blue salvia. There are so many varieties. @TracysHomeGarden3 жыл бұрын
Thank you again Ting! I think all salvias are gorgeous and must have in any garden. Hopefully you’ll be able to find some that you like and goes well with the plants in your garden. Crystal Blule salvia has that bright glowing “Crystal” affect that I love under the sunlight. That was the reason why I planted them at the front…I needed something that was short, compact and showy in spring. However, the dark purple salvia provides great contrast against the yellow/brown fence & green foliage plants & light colour roses I have in the back garden. It’s all about planting what we love and most of the time it’s actually fun to experiment and modify as we go. Happy gardening! 💚🙏🪴

Thank you Dorothy. I fertilize annuals with soluble 15-30-15 every 7-14 days. Perennials - roses & clematis I fertilize with rose food (and ground eggshells) in the spring…and repeat again after 1st flush. Hydrangeas - I feed them with used coffee ground in the spring and fall…because our native soil is alkaline. Sometimes I give the hydrangeas some garden sulfur to help make the soil more acidic. Happy gardening Dorothy! 💚🙏🪴

FYI Your gorgeous salvia is how I found your channel! I was researching it as I’ve never grown salvia before and one of your thumbnails drew me in. Didn’t even know your were local to me until I had watched your videos for weeks 😂 Adore your soft blue salvia in the front yard (crystal blue; Perfect Profusion seems similar and I can get my hands on that variety still this summer so I’m going to buy 3). Salvia goals for me. I have Violet Riot and another blue-purple variety along with Royal Candles Veronica. They’re all nice but lack the wow factor of yours. I’m realizing that dark purple flowers just don’t pop enough for my liking unless there’s lemony-lime foliage behind them as a backdrop. Wish I had figured that out earlier b/c I bought a crap ton of dark purple flowers this summer 🤦🏻♀️
@TracysHomeGarden3 жыл бұрын

@TracysHomeGarden3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Beverly. 💚💚💚 We don’t usually get back spots in our climate. We sometimes get a little bit of black spot during the spring/fall when it’s really wet. This usually goes away during the summer when the rain stops for us. There is a fungicide garden sulfur product that you can buy at the Home Depot for this. You can mix this up in water and spray on the leaves of the plant during the most humid part of the season to help reduce black spot. Hope that helps

Have you tried the 3 in 1 rose food and insect control granular? It was recommended fighting against those Japanese beetles from another Gardner. I haven’t tried this one before Linda. I don’t think it is available in my area in Canada 🇨🇦 yet. Please do let us know how it works out - especially with the Japanese beetles. Thank you Rita. I have a beetle trap/bag set up. Hopefully that helps attract and trap some beetles. Roses tend to be grafted in order to survive our northern Canadian climate. Rooted DA rose branches may not survive in our garden zone. Thank you so much Rita….perhaps I should try rooting and growing them to experiment??? 💚🙏🪴

First time watching your videos! Beautiful garden! May I ask why you don’t treat the the roses to kill the beetles instead of cutting them down?
@TracysHomeGarden3 жыл бұрын
I decided to cut down the roses since we are coming to an end of the first flush of blooms. That way the plants could conserve their energy and put out a good flush after the beetles leave our garden. The roses are highly scented and that makes them most attractive to the beetles.

Here's my dream garden. So beautiful. BTW, I can't find PENSTEMON in any nearby nurseries or garden centers. Where did you get them?

Hi Tracy, I am so looking forward to spring and I am rewatching your videos. May I ask do you need to water your hydrangea in summer after they are established, say after they are planted in ground for 1 or 2 years.
@TracysHomeGarden2 жыл бұрын
Hi hongyu Chen, Depending on your zone and how often you get rain, your natural garden soil (clay or sand etc), etc. How often and how much you water will depend on all the above. For example, in our zone I water the garden 1 time a week until the weather warms up in early summer….if we get a lot of rain then we skip water. However, once the weather warms up in July-August, I sometimes water 3-4 times a week if the temperatures get really dry and warm (30C or high 85F). Also, when you do water during the summer - it is important to water established hydrangeas slow and deep so a drip system may be most suitable. For each established plant, it is recommended to use two 4 gal heads per established plant turned on for 30 mins. After 2-3 days, dig up a sample of soil 6 inches below and see if the soil is still damp or not. If it’s dry then you can water again. I hope that helps to answer your question as it is very difficult to know how much water to give each plant and how often. Happy gardening!

Hi Tracy, thank you so much! I am in Windsor, Ontario. So I think we probably share a similar climate, which we may just a little bit warmer. I think that is why my macrophila hydrangea didn't bloom well last year (I just moved in this house last year) because I gave them little water. I will make some improvements this year for sure. And love your Bobo hydrangea. I am going to plant some this year. So exciting!

Hi Tracy, where did you buy your clematis? I would love to have one as they are really beautiful. Unfortunately, I have not seen them at my local nurseries. Have a good evening!
@TracysHomeGarden3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ting, Most of my clematis come from Sheridan nursery & Canadian Tires. The Pillu clematis was bought from a tiny 4” can and it is huge now in just 4 seasons….a definite beauty for its ability to bloom prolifically. I think at one point it was just covered with blooms that I couldn’t see it’s foliage. Have a great one! 💚🪴🙏

I truly felt your pain at having to cut back your beautiful roses and it made me so thankful that we don't have that nasty Japanese beetle here in New Zealand. I did check it out online and there seems to be a lot of information on how to treat the infestations. But - as usual your garden looks amazing! I adore all your clematis plants and am definitely getting a couple this year. But new plants here won't be available until December (summer). Did you grow your Penstemon plants from seed? I have purchased 2 packets of Penstemon seeds and am about to start them in trays indoors. Take care.

Thank you Jacinta! 🙏💚🪴 I have been trying a few things but it’s a daily chore that I’m hoping there are easier alternatives for those darn beetles. I got the penstemons as small plants. I will collect some seeds this year and sow them to give away. Penstemons is one of my favourite plants for foliage and flowers/seed heads. Clematis will truly be the highlight of any garden in late spring or early summer. Happy gardening Jacinta! 🙏💚🪴

I love watching your video, I bought Bobo after watching your video last year. I saw you were transplanting plants right now, is it too hot to do so? Actually I want to transplant my big leaf hydrangea and replace with Endless Summer, when is good time to do so? Thanks Tracy.
@TracysHomeGarden3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Grace! 🙏💚🪴 I don’t usually like to transplant Macrophylla at this time as they are “water” loving plants. It is best to transplant them in late winter (before the plant leafs out or as soon as the soil thaws). You can also transplant in autumn as well. I’m transplanting now because we have cooler & rainy weather for the next 5 days so they should be okay. I also have my outdoor umbrella ready to shade them if needed as well. Happy gardening! 🙏💚🪴

Can you give the roses a drench? When we lived in Georgia we gave our crape myrtlyes a drench every spring. The japanese beetles are killed when they chew on the leaves.

I ripped out my one rose bush after Japanese beetles destroyed it. I really want to grow a Purple Pillar Rose of Sharon but I hear beetles love Hibiscus as well. They like my Texas Lilac too but don't seem to harm the flower spikes that much.

Those beetles have a liking for everything….but especially for my roses because of the scent. They feed on my LimeLight hydrangea panicles…because I’m short and cannot reach the top of the Limelight panicles…they feed those completely dried. They even feed on the new growth of my clematis as well. I’m not sure if there is any plant they don’t like. 🥺

Are you saying that you will cut out the rose to get the bugs out. I have never heard that before.about Japanese beetle .I have them in my garden and deal with them all the time. Help me. Please.
@TracysHomeGarden3 жыл бұрын
I had to cut down the blooms - they are at the end of their blooming cycle. I will conserve their energy for the next flush of blooms by cutting the blooms down now. Every morning I come out with a bucket of soap and tap the branches to allow the beetles to drop into the bucket. It's best to do this early morning when the beetles are least active. Someone also says to plant 4 o'clock plants as sacrificial plant. I have been looking for this but it's so late in the season that not many nurseries have them. I also hang the beetles bag and that also helps as well. I have a feeling this year's beetles infestation will be worse...due to our early summer start and warm winter. Take care Shirley!
