What are Vibes?

I have wondered in the past what vibes are, but a recent podcast episode made me search for an exact definition of the word, which you are now free to use ( you are welcome, I guess).

Well, "vibe" is a corruption of "vibration" as present in the lexicon of certain "new wave" groups (pun unavoidable). Ex: "this place gives off good vibrations" or "we just don't vibrate at the same frequency". In this sense, "vibe" is just an esoterical way of describing a general impression of something, with the stark difference that when used in this way, all subjectivity is removed. To say "this thing's 'vibe' is a certain way" as opposed to "this thing makes me feel a certain way" leaves the observation whilst removing the observer. Anyway, it is fun to derive fixed dictionary definitions for very coloquial terms like so. I'm glad KZbin recommended your video, it was fun.

I would argue that “ vibes” implies both a formlessness of concept, intentionally vague in their description of a thing , an instinctual element- wherein they describe only situations as perceived at a surface level without further consideration, and finally the capacity for describing conceptual rather than emotional experiences, a precursor to ideation , especially in the context of the description ‘ just vibes’, in response to an argument -to mean that it is without rigor. A definition (or set of definitions) which does not convey these characteristics is to me an incomplete definition . Furthermore the definition which you provide is not distinct enough from atmosphere or feeling to differentiate between them , especially due to the lack of distinction between formality. Both atmosphere and feeling already describe the interaction of elements, because that interaction becomes a property of the ‘superelement’ of the scenario that is reacted to. Vibe to me occupies the space between atmosphere and feeling while being the least serious of the three, especially useful when you haven’t yet thought too much about the thing you want to describe.
